I wouldn’t say the sci-fi elements are non-existent. There was a giant space station in there at one point, and those dragon wings don’t look natural to me.

I think this looks really cool! I enjoyed both 2016 and Eternal, but I played those on console and using a controller really felt like a handicap for me. Now I have a good PC, so I'll play that on this. Never got around to TAG cause I was on console as well. I think taking the series in this sci-fi medieval direction is pretty fresh. I let out an audible "It's about time" when I saw the mech from Eternal was actually going to be usable. Seeing the game is taking major inspiration from the original Doom is interesting. I wonder what exactly that means. Are they taking cues from level design or encounter design? It will be interesting to see. And finally, that manc design is awesome, and so is that gun that shoots crushed skulls. Really looking forward to this!

The trailer looks like Gauntlet Meets Heretic Meets Hexen Meets Grungo Meets Doom. With a bit of Modded with that shield Hell Warrior type. Or Centaur/Slaughtaur from Hexen type shield.

 

Is it weird that were getting 2 Doom midquels?

 

Hellion is a Sequel to Ultimate Doom but a Prequel to Doom 2.

 

While Dark Ages is a Sequel to the Doom 64 Lost Levels but a Prequel to Doom 2016.

When I heard about the name and premise for this one I wasn't too thrilled, but this honestly looks brilliant. I don't know what to make of the flying sections, but the action looks fantastic, and with such a dark, gritty, yet dynamic aesthetic.

As I suspected the gameplay looks great, I just hope they don't focus much on the lore, Eternal and especially TAG left a bad taste in my mouth in that regard.

Looks pretty cool. I like the chainsaw shield and the SSG redesign. Now let's see someone make something like the chainsaw shield in a GZDoom mod lol.

I just severely question the timeline of events here. So there's Doom 1, 2 and 64 with Doomguy having pretty normal weapons and some futuristic prototypes, then 2016 has some more weaponry and specialized armor, then Eternal has a barrage of new upgrades for the armor and the weapons. Now Dark Ages has equally if not more powerful weaponry, and also fucking MECHS. And this is supposed to be in the "before times"?

My brother in Christ. This is the game that we will see Doom guy turn to the Doom Slayer by beating a Titan "Bare-handed" and getting entombed.

 

And a high likelyhood is that it wasn't planned to come after Eternal and its DLC's. This really seems like one of those things that would have been great to have been made way earlier.

 

And this is coming from someone who didn't even like the Lore that they're going with that much. It feels too shoe-horned in trying to preach Warhammer 40kisms

It will undoubtedly be more demanding since the baseline target platform(s) are stronger this time around, but id Software's engineers know how to optimize and a 3060 is roughly on-par with the current-gen consoles (and certainly better than a Series S), so you should be fine.

As someone who wasn't that bothered by the dumbass lore in Eternal (not because it isn't stupid but because it's pretty easy to ignore), I would really like to see them attempt a more Fromsoft-style approach where you're dumped into a weird sprawling hellworld with a lot of mysterious names and locations that are almost totally unexplained. Going from place to place and seeing titlecards like "Blood Swamps" or "Necropolis" and letting imagination and inference fill in the gaps without anyone explicitly telling you. Not unlike how the original game's levels were always in surreal locales whose in-universe function was usually totally abstract and unexplained.

 

That way when you meet characters with vague-ass names like "The Betrayer" or whatever, you could let the name and aesthetic play their suggestive role and conjure up stories in the player's mind without having to lore dump a bunch of dumb proper-noun shit onto the player.

It feels like a bunch of other stuff that's been around for decades. I pretty much completely failed to resonate with it.

Regardless of what they're doing with this game, and stuff that I mostly hate anyways, I hate more that other studios were shut down so that we could have yet another Doom game instead of something new.

The closing of Tango Gameworks and these other studios really does suck balls, but do you really think that this game wasn't already multiple years deep into development or something?
