The closing of Tango Gameworks and these other studios really does suck balls, but do you really think that this game wasn't already multiple years deep into development or something?

Quote

the shutdowns would help prioritise “high-impact titles” and continued investment in “blockbuster games” from Bethesda.

I don't want to too heavily derail the topic so this is just how I'll answer and let others continue the conversation, but this is from internals at Xbox/Microsoft. "continued investment" being the key words here.

From the mixed reactions from the community right now I can tell this game is gonna be extremely controversial when it launches

So far those mixed reactions seem to only really be coming from places like here, which are more invested in the older games. You look everywhere else and the game is being hyped to hell and back (pun intended) because, on the whole, people really loved Eternal.

And hey, even if I didn't love Eternal like most people, I see its appeal and in moments I do find the game fun, so I totally get why people are super excited for any new Doom release.

I'd say the developers did everything right if it caused so much excitement

Let me just add my voice to the choir of "this is just Heretic with extra steps"

Honestly, more than Heretic, this doomhell+tech+medfan mix reminds me of Hell-Forged.

If it takes a step back from the ADHD-fest that was Eternal's combat, I'll play it much much more.

looks like it is, ive probably been one of the most vocal critics of Eternal's combat loop here and I think it looks way more grounded in its approach.

Always has been due to many mods/wads implementing it

id is forgetting what Doom is, the scifi elements are almost non-existent. They should've just made this a new IP in general.

Same happened to Quake 2, entirely new art direction yet Quake 2 was amazing and fun to play, so let's just hope they won't fuck up gameplay. Also that SSG holy fuck it's amazing

It's quite well known at this point that it was called Quake 2 due to running out of time finding it a name, they never intended to call it that and explicitly didn't want to.

Feels like Eternal DLC. I wouldn't really care, and honestly don't care that much anyway, but something more original (like a Quake title) would have been preferable personally. Still, I hope whoever is excited for this has all their hype fulfilled by the final product. It's gonna be a no from me though, dawg.

Am I the only one who thinks that the idea of a cape for doom slayer is a reused idea from Steve burg's concept arts for doom 4?.

I just severely question the timeline of events here. So there's Doom 1, 2 and 64 with Doomguy having pretty normal weapons and some futuristic prototypes, then 2016 has some more weaponry and specialized armor, then Eternal has a barrage of new upgrades for the armor and the weapons. Now Dark Ages has equally if not more powerful weaponry, and also fucking MECHS. And this is supposed to be in the "before times"?

dont think about it, i just focus on gameplay, and so far what i see looks good, all i want is good gameplay mang i don't care abotu the lore

And the horror elements.

These games completely lost me with all the lore that is basically fanfiction.

fanfiction is cool and honorable

I don't follow games news anymore so I was surprised this morning when I saw the trailer of a new Doom, really thought Eternal TAG will be the final entry of the saga.

Eternal was too elitist with the system of secondary weapons for dropping ammus (chainsaw/flamethrower to get armors/ammunitions), so my only hope is that they rollback and return to a more oldschool doom like gunplay. Wait and see.

I was very sceptical before the trailer but it has me pleasantly surprised. I still don't like any of the Doom Slayer or Night Sentinel stuff but the weapons look fun and at first glance it looks like the gameplay will again be a little different from Eternal. Visually it look pretty interesting too. The monsters looked cool and so did some of the environments (again, not the Night Sentinel stuff tho). Not a fan of the dragon but piloting a mech could be fun. I'm carefully optimistic.

EDIT:

Hugo implying that there'll be more freedom in ways to play also peaks my interest.

He was asked about glory kills, and kinda gave a vague response. Didn't confirm or deny they would be in the game, but it implies the glory kills won't be in it, at least not in the form we've seen.

My brother in Christ. This is the game that we will see Doom guy turn to the Doom Slayer by beating a Titan "Bare-handed" and getting entombed.

So between Doom 2 or 64 and 2016?

I would assume after D64 and before 2016.

I'll go on a limb here and say that if you are conisdering posting on this thread BUT your only interest is criticizing this game because of how much it doesn't resemble E1M1, then take your salt elsewhere and Let People Enjoy The Shiny New Game. Any other kind of valid criticism is welcome of course. For example I didn't see any Cacodemons in the trailer, 0/10

The Bethesda article talking about Dark Ages' inspiration by Classic Doom in terms of gameplay and Hugo Martin's vague response to the Glory Kill question definitely makes me suspect they won't be in the game and instead the gameplay loop will revolve around the Shield Saw and melee strikes to recover resources. Maybe the Shield Saw recovers ammo, while melee recovers health? That way the player can stay in the fight without having to go through animation finishers.

Also it was something he suggested in the Eternal developer livestreams, but Hugo does mention that there will be less put into the Codex and more into the story itself. I really do hope they take a more restrained approach to the lore. Speaking of, I realized that there's a good chance the ending of Dark Ages, or within a DLC if those get confirmed, will cover the Slayer's crusade within Hell after Argent D'Nur falls - "In the First Age" material. Would be interesting to see. Likely also see the return of the Icon of Sin since it was key to Argent D'Nur's fall, and possibly fight it again so that it could get later resurrected in Eternal? There was also a line in 2016's Slayer Testaments that does mention the Slayer's battles across time - "And in his terrible rancor between worlds and through time" - so maybe it could give an excuse to later visit other environments? The environment where he punches the Titan looks so much like Mars with its structures' architecture, there's even a structure in the background with a massive energy beam - not unlike the Argent Tower. Also looking back at the Slayer Testaments, the line "with sword and shield of adamantine strength" is a bit funny now that he has an actual shield.

Also, David Levy confirmed on Twitter that he isn't involved in Dark Ages. So possibly just Andrew Hulshult or maybe bringing in another composer?

This looks very promising. I'm glad its not Eternal because as much as I loved it, I don't think they could possibly push that style any further without the game becoming way too niche for anyone but hardcore fans of that particular game (you could argue the first DLC does get too niche). Digging the seeming lack of a jump, the "inspired by the original Doom (1993)" quote makes me think this will be much more like a bullet hell, yet another reinterpretation of what a modern Doom game can be. I don't think anyone saying "it looks like Eternal" is paying close attention because everything from the game speed to the mechanics to the level design (wide open spaces, lots of room for slow moving projectiles) looks completely different. I really hope we get a full level showcase at Quakecon like we did for Eternal because I want to see what exactly is happening between combat set pieces since platforming would be pretty tough without jumping.
