What if ID went low tech, for a bit.

What does it matter if it's by id or not? It's not the same id from the Doom & Quake days anyways.

id no longer exists but for a corporate entity that just happened to have bought the rights to the best game series of all time. I'd argue any random GZDoom game is more akin to id than whatever the corporate entity with the copyright wants to do, but thats just my opinion. Being mega rich enough to buy copyright doesn't automatically make what you do with that copyright valuable in my eyes, I care more about the actual talent and conditions of development.

Lost me at stealth. <vomits a bit in mouth>

Hitman style stealth.  not normal stealth.  Because of all the halloween costumes and the "tricks" of trick or treat

I feel ya on that.  But you gotta admit, the nuDOOM is fun.  Hell, I'd go so far as to call both of them amazing.  There are very talented people within that company who still LOVE gaming very much.  It's why DOOM is so fun.  Those people understand games and fun.  DOOM doesn't feel like a chore the way a lot of modern games do.

If those folks were released from the DOOM/QUAKE mold, I'm very curious what they would come up with. Not the entire dev team, just the heavy hitters.  Keep the budget low to reduce risk so the suits don't get too ruffled.  And just let them make something.  You know, like they're artists and craftsmen.

The only way something like that is ever going to happen is if they break away from the company, and strike off on their own. It's worked out before, but Daikatana is known in the gaming community as a cautionary tale for a reason. Plus, the way I see it, there's no reason to, not yet at least; I'm not gonna praise NuDoom since I haven't played 2016 or Eternal, nor do I intend to, but what we have now seems to be a pretty stable dynamic

But...what if...some of iD software and newer devs made something like this and released to the public like a mod.

https://eviternity.dfdoom.com/

This it's still groundbreaking and would be a indie Doom rigth?

I'd argue that old id wasn't even that good, the only thing that made doom and quake special was it being open source

Doom pioneered first-person shooter gameplay, and Quake was a technical marvel long before it was open source. They're not the only games from the time period to have had their source released, either. If you mean being open source is why they're still relevant, then I'm inclined to agree, but it had nothing to do with their initial success.

I don't think of terms in success or relevance but personal value and artistic value, doom really really really lacks environment design and narrative. doom mods and modding tools are really the only parts of it that make it "worthwhile" to me really.

For a company that's built so much of its fame on pushing technological boundaries and always being forward-looking, it would seem unbearably sad in some way to just see them ape the technological aesthetic of their 90s work just because it's familiar and vibey.

Duke Nukem 3D & Hexen are open source and I don't think their gameplay aged as well.

I agree on this for sure. I don't mind what they're doing with the new DOOMs. Hell I really enjoyed 2016 and I rarely enjoy modern games.

Sure they're a bit tied to the DOOM IP, so eventually they'd be better of with their own thing. Still DOOM doesn't come with as many strings attached as most IPs.

At least new Id still really seems to care about the gameplay. A lot of the high end stuff seems more focused on graphics and story and I don't care about that in the slightest if the gameplay is subpar.

True creativity though? My feeling, ever since the likes of Binding of Isaac, Cave Story et.c. has been that the indie scene covers all my true gamer needs and then some. And the droves of PWADs around do this as well despite using such an "old" engine.

It would be cool if the money could marry creativity but I think that only happens rarely nowadays. It's a very different age.

If you mean what if iD made something akin to Ion Fury? It would probably be super sick and would be an amazing throwback / homage to how games used to be that we would all love... I'd actually like to see something like that, thinking of it now
