Ashbox02 Posted June 17 Hi everyone, I've been gaming for years and about 1 year away from finishing my CS degree, though I feel like I've learned almost nothing about coding, and especially nothing about game development. I loved doom when I was a kid and admittingly haven't played it in about a decade, only playing doom eternal a year ago. But I want to learn more about game development and coding and heard that modding is a fun and rewarding way to do both at the same time. I also heard doom is the most supported (modding scene wise). So I wanted to ask everyone here how to start. What Doom do I buy on steam, do I need a third party port? Also are there any good tutorials on how to start modding? I don't care all that much about map editing, it is cool and maybe I get to it later but I wanna like tweak enemies or add a gun or something along those lines. It seem so like scary to start, but I'm hoping someone can somewhat teach me how to swim before I jump in fully. Thanks for you all you're help and care, can't wait to see the responses! 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
bobstremglav Posted June 17 (edited) Hi! Making maps would be easier way to get into modding game Yes, Doom is very supported. There many tools for many platforms, but if you want just to tweak stuff then there few options: Dehacked (better use Whacked, windows port, but that's not really about coding...) or languages of advanced ports such as GZDoom It's also cool to know game in many aspects. Visit doomwiki.org, there a lot of technical stuff which can help you, like various bugs articles, values of weapons and monsters, etc If you want to work with dehacked or replacing graphics, Doomkid on youtube has enough of useful tutorials decino also has many good videos (with yellow background) about technical aspects of game If it's about modding something not vanilla - that's not my field, but I hope I provided nice resources which would help understand game better. WASFDDDDD Posted June 17 I recommend you buy the classic bundle on Steam, which will not only provide you with the WADs for Doom 1 and 2, but will also let you play Doom 64 as a bonus (For the most part it's better than Doom 1, but you don't have to keep playing once you kill your first cyberdemon tbh) If you don't wanna spend any money, you can also download Freedoom like I did before I got myself a copy of Doom 1 and 2. Honestly even after you get the original game, Freedoom is still good to keep around, it's tons of fun to map for with the amount of textures it adds, and it's also just really well done in general, especially with the new update GZDoom is the best engine for modding, what with how it has its own coding language and all. If content modding is your goal and you don't care about mapmaking, that's the port you wanna use. Otherwise I don't really know much about modding, I've used Zscript before but the most complex thing I've made with it is an unreleased map that makes use of it for teleporting monster ambushes 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
