Yellow screen after starting GZDoom

After starting GZDoom, with mods or without, all I can see is a yellow screen. I can hear music, I can choose options, but I cant see anything other than the color yellow. Is there a fix for this?

Does changing the rendering API (between Vulkan, OpenGL, etc.) help? You can choose this from the dialog box that pops up if you start GZDoom without an IWAD, or by editing the "vid_preferbackend" line in the config.
