how do you feel when your work buys you pizza and foozball tables?

does it piss you off as much as it does me, like literally no one at the job can actually have the time off to even use the damn thing, its such corporate nicety nonsense.

Well if work life balance and company culture is good then pizza and foozball tables is a bonus.

 

But I have experienced these situations on multiple occasions, where there are glaring issues such as mass firings, job insecurity, questionable management, poor communication and a toxic community brewing during lunch breaks, where introducing pizza and foozball feels facetious and redundant (and near offensive) when there are far more critical issues at hand. 

But also understand that some people in corporate, management, HR etc do in fact try to help improve the situation but they are very limited in influence and resources and so all they can get over the line is some fun little additions like these. Better than nothing?

We have a very small team, about 8 people for the entire organization and we only buy pizza at work when it's one of our coworkers' birthdays.

 

And... for us this is just a reason to eat for free and chat collectively, since at work we don’t have time to talk. Nothing more

I worked in such an environment for only three months in the past and it left me with... impressions that will last a lifetime.

We have pizza and events every once in a while, I’ve picked up on ping pong, it’s a good way to unwind after work and get some of that excess energy out. So far my place is pretty good about work-life balance, checking glassdoor also confirms to me it’s not a fluke. 
Sometimes they bring beer and snacks up to the office :)

I work for my college campus store, and depending on what department you work it can either be great or kinda suck. When I worked in the textbooks department, I was actually friends with my coworkers and manager. The manager would set up various pizza parties for us in textbooks after work hours, and she paid for the pizza and stuff out of her own paycheck, so that never felt disingenuous.

 

But when HR just leaves pizza in the break room, that does feel like a slap in the face. That money could be used for raises or something.

Depends where you are working. When I worked on farms a pizza was a really nice gesture.

At a company that makes well over ten million a year... with not many employees... and salary is mediocre... it is insulting. I mean, I don't mean to complain about my pay too much because it's more than I ever made before... but even with half as much I could still afford to buy myself a damn pizza.

When I worked for a K-pop studio we would often go to the beach, movie theater, theme park, bowling, mini golf etc. but if there was still work to be done at the studio we would have to go back afterward to complete it, even if it meant working well into the night because deadlines don't change and we were all paid salary, and we couldn't stay at the studio while everyone else did the activity because we had to be a team. There was also a competitive tone to every activity dictated by the whims of the owner and his wife, with winners receiving substantial cash rewards and losers having to clean toilets or park far away and have to walk uphill through the neighborhoods of Laurel Canyon to get to the studio. Every Monday morning was "voluntary worship" where a Christian preacher would come in to speak and lead in worship songs and prayers. It was "voluntary", but those who didn't participate were either made to feel so unwelcome by the owners and their lackeys that they left the company or would eventually be let go for various reasons.

 

After a one-on-one conversation with the owner at a lunch meeting about how vital I was to the studio's success and growth, and discussing all the plans going forward, the studio shut down during the pandemic and I was let go. Later on while working at a local Target, I was grateful anytime they would bring in pizza or a taco truck while doing overtime during holidays and special occasions, because the only thing that was required of me was to do my normal job and go home on time while enjoying free food.

Personally to me, as cool as it is for management to buy pizzas, tacos, make burgers, and stock up on soda in the break room, I still avoid all that either way. Mostly it's me being worried about how well kept and well stored the food is, because sometimes all that stuff just lays there all day. Lastly, it's always the stuff they bring in when it's like hot and humid as fuck outside, so the last thing I need right now on a +35c day is fill myself up with grease, salt, and brown sugar water. Then again, that's just me, it is still appreciated.

One time my boss gave me a 20% off coupon for a pizza, it was expired but it was a nice gesture that somewhat made up for the fact that he shut off my water and electricity for three days because I only put in ten unpaid hours of overtime one week compared to what I normally do.
