The Name's Plissken Posted June 18 Due to some life changes, different hobbies, work, etc. I haven't really been active in the DOOM community for a little over 2 years (early 2022). I used to make Vanilla/BOOM maps, but haven't really posted anything meaningful, play deathmatches, and even participated in some CTF event. Then I lost interest in DOOM until I regained it few days ago. My friend and I concluded that multiplayer games these days kinda suck, so we thought, why not go back and play DOOM, which we can customize to our liking with mods? We're fans of realism shooters, so we turned to Brutal Doom on Zandronum and its Realism difficulty. We played the Alien Vendetta megawad, and it was an absolute blast! I eventually wanted to create a small Invasion mode map for us, so I installed Ultimate Doom Builder, and I got reminded how fun mapping can be. So it looks like my DOOM phase is back. Now a question comes to my mind - What did I miss? I've heard about MyHouse.wad and played it, few days ago I learned that source code for DOS DOOM was found. Anything else interesting I missed? What are the hottest source ports these days? Any new maps I should play? For clarification; I used to have an account on DoomWorld, but due to a lost email password and some privacy concerns, I decided to create a new one. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
TheGreenZap Posted June 18 (edited) I would check out SIGIL II if you haven't done that. Look over the Cacowards from the last couple of years. There was a lot of cool stuff released for the 30th anniversary. Popular source ports these days are GZDoom, Zandronum, DSDA, Doom Retro, Chocolate, and Crispy. vanilla_d00m Posted June 20 (edited) SIGIL II - December 10, 2023 - John Romero's Episode 6 for DOOM. You where gone since 2022?? Early.. So I think you missed this one. I hear alot of people using GZDoom on this forum, that one is straight forward and I recommend it. Edited June 20 by vanilla_d00m 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
bofu Posted June 20 (edited) PrBoom+ is no longer supported and has been succeeded by DSDA-Doom, Woof!, and Nugget Doom, among others. There's a new gameplay standard supported by these called MBF21 that significantly narrows the discrepancy between GZDoom mods and non-GZDoom mods when it comes to monster and weapon capabilities, meaning there are more non-GZDoom mods that have significant additions to the bestiary and other advanced features. Doom Retro is a very interesting source port that, while introducing some changes to gameplay, also feels like an alternate evolution of classic Doom. It also supports MBF21. Helion is still in development, but it's a very promising source port that has its own renderer. As for projects you may have missed, one need only go to the Wad Discussion forum to see all the topics made in the last two years. You can also look at the YTubers if channels who play a lot of stuff you may not have heard of (Vytaan is one I highly recommend, as he tends to play things that haven't gotten a lot of recognition, not that I'm biased or anything...) CacoKnight Posted June 21 (edited) I kind of started playing DOOM (masterpiece) last year and everything I'm finding is new, I gathered some info and "stuff" on a pastebin site that might help you, here is the link (others are welcome to suggest new things or whatever I typed wrong): DOOM Stuff edit: Also don't forget Eviternity II. Fireseth Posted June 21 NuDoom related, but DOOM: The Dark Ages had its first trailer released; a prequel to DOOM 2016 and Eternal. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
