Because the Doomguy is doing something outside of the area where all the lost souls and demons are on the rampage - don't ask what, I'm sure you'll be given some task while walking around in non-hostileville, like "Hey marine, get your ass out to the outer base and check the readings on <some device>". whereupon you have to get to a certain area that supposedly leads out and which triggers the cinematic.

I forgot to mention before that after the long sequence with scientist guy and demons overrunning the base, there's a short thing leading up to the game:
We see the doomguy arrive in a lift shortly after that sequence I described, and he sure doesn't seem to be aware of all the shit that just happened, because he walks out of the lift while making a dissatisfied grunting sound (sounds like he's a'mighty bored and annoyed with his new, boring assignment), then he stops and looks around in sudden confusion, before he dons his helmet and the camera "jumps into his head".

Note that this is only a rough description of the events - there's probably more to it than that but it's been nearly a year since I last saw this thing.

Maybe we'll learn a little more about the doomguy from the manual, they usually have a story page, and maybe there might even been a novel wrighten on the events of Doom 3, just like the two Halo novels, "Fall of Reach" and "The Flood". Time will only tell.

in this tread called "seeing distant battles" people talk about more options considering what happened to other people on the base and encountering npc's..there will be npc's ,but it's not clear yet how we will interact with them(read that in a quakecon interview)

They allready made novels on the doom guy (Flynn Taggart) and the doomworld, 4 of them.

Well i've seen a "doom" novel, though it looked really retarted so I got a starcraft novel instead. Hopefully some writer will have enough corage to make a good doom novel. And I wasn't talking about novels for doom 1 and 2, I was talking about novels for doom 3.
