læmænt Posted August 29, 2001 You don't understand shit if you consider classical music to be nice and relaxing. 0 Share this post Link to post

fodders Posted August 29, 2001 When you all get older, you will realise it's not the music, it's what is happening in your life at that moment that creats a link to "wow this is good" in your brain. As you listen to what you consider is "great" you will realise you stopped listening, and started thinking about something in your life at that moment, forming a link that even 20 years later, upon hearing it, will bring back those memories, so creating a "classic" If you still feel the same at 50 that you did at 20, you have wasted 30 years of your life Mohamid Ali 0 Share this post Link to post
Liam Posted August 29, 2001 I listen to... Alternative My personal fave. Note I don't mean MTV alternative like Sugar Ray or whatever the hell they're called, I mean like Cake, Beck, Blur, Weezer, so forth. Older punk When I say older, I mean like Nirvana and vintage Green Day. Back when punk was punk and not this pussyfoot rock like "Blink 182". There are a few good modern punk bands... the Offspring and such. Harder Rock/Metal Need I say more? Alice in Chains, ACDC, Cradle of Filth, Deftones, blah blah blah etc. etc. That's not it, but that's the majority of what I listen to. 0 Share this post Link to post
captmellow Posted August 29, 2001 Re: Michael Jackson, there is no denying his talent as a songwriter. I have been enjoying Alien Ant Farm's cover of Smooth Criminal lately. When I first heard it, I had no idea it was a MJ cover, & I was struck by the MJ-ish yelps, finding them very amusing. I was actually disappointed when I discovered it was a cover tune. It's a sad thing for a band when its main claim to fame is a cover. 0 Share this post Link to post

But the AAF cover is pure shit. 0 Share this post Link to post
Linguica Posted August 29, 2001 How did you not know it was a cover? Did you never hear the original somehow? 0 Share this post Link to post
captmellow Posted August 29, 2001 Older punk When I say older, I mean like Nirvana and vintage Green Day. (Sigh) That really makes me feel old to hear you call Nirvana & Green Day old punk. I thought you were going to mention the likes of Black Flag, Plasmatics, Clash, Ramones.Back when punk was punk and not this pussyfoot rock like "Blink 182". There are a few good modern punk bands... the Offspring and such. Harder Rock/Metal Need I say more? Alice in Chains, ACDC, Cradle of Filth, Deftones, blah blah blah etc. etc. That's not it, but that's the majority of what I listen to. It's funny, because I tend to lump Offspring/Blink 182/Sum 41 together into the same basic youthful, happy-sounding punk. I love Deftones. They've got such a unique sound, & I have begun to hear vocalists emulate Chino's style. 0 Share this post Link to post
captmellow Posted August 29, 2001 How did you not know it was a cover? Did you never hear the original somehow? Correct. Is it a recent song? 0 Share this post Link to post
Linguica Posted August 29, 2001 Correct. Is it a recent song?It was released in 1987. 0 Share this post Link to post
captmellow Posted August 29, 2001 Correct. Is it a recent song?It was released in 1987. Back then I couldn't be drawn away from my black metal. I had no idea what was popular on the radio. 0 Share this post Link to post
captmellow Posted August 29, 2001 Okay, this Q goes out to those who say that Mudvayne/Slipknot is unoriginal (if you're still reading this thread: Who has done that sound before? Besides Korn? I honestly don't know. 0 Share this post Link to post
stphrz Posted August 29, 2001 (Sigh) That really makes me feel old to hear you call Nirvana & Green Day old punk. I thought you were going to mention the likes of Black Flag, Plasmatics, Clash, Ramones. Heh. For a second there I thought he was going to mention stuff like the Dolls, Iggy or MC5 or something :P Now *that* is old punk :) 0 Share this post Link to post

Lüt Posted August 29, 2001 'Specially Slade, Lou Reed and Bowie.I gotta get some Lou Reed. I have the Rollins live album where they play Move Right In - I was hooked on that song for like 3 months before I could listen to other Rollins stuff again :) Unfortunately I could never find the album it was on :| 0 Share this post Link to post
stphrz Posted August 29, 2001 That song was off Velvet Underground's Another View. You might also find it on one of Lou Reed's live albums, bootlegs or compilations. There's been so many I can't be sure. 0 Share this post Link to post
captmellow Posted August 29, 2001 or that they supposeddly didn't work hard for their successIf they had to work hard to turn out that crap, then I gotta agree, they're idiots and at least somewhat musically incapacitated. I can't imagine anybody working hard on turning that kinda music out unless they have no idea what they're doing in the studio or no previous musical/songwriting experience. "Work hard" is totally relative to the people using that phrase. Lüt, have you formed this opinion based on hearing their entire album, or just on "Dig"? This question could apply to Liam on saying the singer's voice only sounds like gravel. I ask this because if you have carefully listened to their entire range of songs, you would find a quite diverse selection of sounds. IMO, I can pick out some rather jazz/fusion influence in some songs (Everything is Nothing), some very funky flanger sounding guitar (Nothing to Gein), & some amazing vocal harmonies (et. al.). Perhaps you should qualify your statements, rather than dismiss them so readily based on one song. 0 Share this post Link to post

Nothing to Gein was the only real tolerable song on that album. Songs like Dig and Under my skin are horrible no matter what, and Death Blooms was ruined by the vox and guitar. The rest of the album was just the same old screaming at the mic to horrible, sometimes unoriginal riffs and basslines (internal primates, cradle,) 0 Share this post Link to post
captmellow Posted August 29, 2001 Liam, having heard the entire album, surely you would agree that the singer at times did alternate between screaming & a rather smooth voice. BTW have you heard anything by older (Drugstore) Cake i.e. "Rock & Roll Lifestyle"? 0 Share this post Link to post
