No ideas then, because your bug report "/Users/prenshaw/Desktop/Doom: line 4: 24998 Bus error" does not look like a bug in doom sources for me. You can try to ask Neil about such errors. Probably he knows something.

Well as I was saying, I was playing evilution (level 05 to be precise), and then as I was nearing completion of the level, it crashed out, with that message left in the terminal.

So i think its clear something went wrong in the source at some point, but i will admit its probably not the type of thing that is going to be tracked down in a hurry if at all. But i thought i would report it while in this thread.

Can you reproduce it? I tried some demos on tnt map05 - no issues on Windows.

I have a problem with PrBoom+ hanging on me. Around about half the time I try to load a game it loads to the title screen and then the game, I hit a key to start a game and then it freezes. When I do a Ctrl-Alt-Del it states PrBoom+ has stopped responding. This happens with any Iwad and also happens when using ZDL or the exe itself. I'm on Win XP SP3. This happens in 2.5.10 so I tried 2.5.11 and it still happens. Thanks for any help.

Well, after hammering PrBoom and PrBoom+ 2.5.08 I haven't got the freezing at all. I went back to to try 2.5.11 and it still happened though less frequently...

No, it does not help. The only thing I can suggest is
snd_midiplayer "sdl"
in cfg, but I think it will not help.

Sorry if this is a noob question.

PrBoom+ v2.5.1.0 on Mac OS X 10.6.7 halted with a bus error just now (something I never thought I'd see after I stopped using OS 8). If it happens again, what information would be helpful for the programmers to know?

I was playing Evilution level 03, so the problem can't be a paucity of WAD playtesting this time.  :>

Yeah, I was using Joy2Key and that's the way I have my controller mapped. FYI, I've used PrBoom+ both with my controller and keyboard only. I still get the error regardless of control method.

Unfortunately, you were right regarding the SDL MIDI player. It seems to have made no difference. :(

Stupid question, but how do you adjust the brightness with PrBoom-Plus? The option doesn't seem to appear in the menu and I can't find it in the text document either...

Is there a way to capture music as well when using -viddump? I've tried all of the "Prefered MIDI capture" options, but SDL is the only one that doesn't just crash the game...

In particular, it'd be preferable that music gets captured as well instead of playing back at normal speed while the video/sound effects get captured.

There is no way to capture music when using the SDL "Preferred Midi Player". That is (one of) the reasons that the other options were added.

If any of them crash the game for you, then that's something I'd like to fix.

Do they crash the game all the time, or just with -viddump? Please post basic computer specs (including OS).

They crash it all the time, though I'm not entirely sure if I need other software installed to use them...?

Arch Linux x86_64
Athlon 64 X2 3.0GHz
GeForce GTX 460
the sound is just integrated on the motherboard, some NVIDIA chipset (supposedly) conforming to HDA specs.

Are you using the latest svn? I fixed a bug that only presented on x86-64 linux not too long ago.

If you could give me console output from a crash, that'd be nice.


As far as needing other software, none of them should crash in any circumstance. The OPL player should work without any extra software; the fluidsynth player requires a soundfont (.sf2), and the portmidi player requires working system midi out (it uses OSS i believe). But they should never crash even if they don't have that.

Glad to hear. The fluidsynth player also works for recording (if you give it a soundfont of course); the portmidi player doesn't though because it's doing the same basic thing as the SDL player; using system midi output.

Wherever you like, so long as you specify an absolute path in the config file. The config option is called snd_soundfont; if it's a relative path I think it only searches relative to current directory?

Well I think armadosia MAP04 is quite shitty, I didn't want to post any demo, just to record something for myself... But I cannot play back my demo with the same version of PrBoom+ (2.5.1.1) - out of sync. One suspicious line in stdout.txt:

P_SpawnMapThing: solid hanging body in tall sector at 3216,-1888 (type=51)
Is there any way to play it back? (the demo is temporarily here at speedyshare)

That line in the stdout.txt doesn't mean anything is wrong - it's just information for the mapper, who may have only tested in ports with zclipping, or a warning for the player that the map may require zclipping (or have been tested with it in mind). Or it might mean that nothing is wrong at all - the object may be intended to block movement. Anyway, it doesn't affect vanilla demo sync - if there were a bug in this respect, then there would be a large number of desynching demos as a result.

What date/file size is your copy of the Armadosia wad?

As a wild guess, maybe there is some corrupted data in the demo header.
