Zaldron Posted October 13, 2001 Well, that's something different, I thought we were comparing each engine's own merits. id artists always beat the hell out of anyone else when it comes to the actual graphic resources. Yeah, some texts are really horrible, but with all that decal system, the stretching and shit you *can* do something WAY better than what you can accomplish in Jdoom. 0 Share this post Link to post
LorD BaZTArD Posted October 13, 2001 JDoom is an incredible engine. The only problem is that No-one has made anything for it. Lut: I'm pretty sure JDoom CAN handle that. Fiddling around in Jdooms console I found something referring to texture size. Min Texture size = 1x1, max 2048X2048 or some huge number like that. It could of been something else tho....... But jeez, make a map for Jdoom with decent textures I'm sure it'll look better than vanilla doom2 levels and textures. 0 Share this post Link to post
ReX Posted October 13, 2001 On the topic of Blood 1, I loved that game.Ah, another vampire ... I mean lover of Blood. Yes, a truly immersive game that gets into one's head. Another Build-engine game that I enjoyed at the time was Shadow Warrior. Admittedly it was a Duke3D clone, but then I thoroughly enjoyed Duke3D too, so Shadow Warrior was a blast for me. 0 Share this post Link to post
Jayextee Posted October 13, 2001 From a technical point of view, then JDoom is completely void, not actually being the original engine. But creatively, given the merits of Doom's and Duke's artwork, Doom's is a lot more abstract by comparison, and therefore hasn't really 'dated' as much as duke's - as is the case with most older games that tried to be realistic. You'll probably see this a lot when photorealism is actually possible with game graphics, and games like Deus Ex, et al will actually look more dated than say, Serious Sam with it's comic-book styling. The issue of what looks dated and what doesn't is probably more a subjective matter than anything, but it's the same thing when I look at old games of similar nature like, say StreetFighter and Mortal Kombat. We all know the better game of course, and when it was first released, MK did look better, but now it just looks poor, and yet SF's comicbook appeal is still pretty strong, graphically. All subjective, of course, but isn't that the nature of this post? ;) Oh yeah, I didn't get to the point, being my answer to the question, which is: Neither, IMO. Now, compare Duke to ZDoom (Software) for example, and we have a different story... 0 Share this post Link to post
pilottobombadier Posted October 13, 2001 For christ's sake, of course JDoom looks better than Duke, it's GL! even a retard would figure that out! 0 Share this post Link to post
Lengis Posted October 13, 2001 If the maker of JDoom were to make JDuke, JRedneckRampage, JBlood, (in other words a JBuild Engine)then it would be a different situation though. The vanilla build engine is far superior to the vanilla doom engine. I'm fairly sure that the build engine is the most advanced sprite(bitmap) based FPS engine. 0 Share this post Link to post
LorD BaZTArD Posted October 14, 2001 Jbuild? Uh no. Jdoom doesn't use the vanilla doom engine. JDoom is a Source Port of the Doomsday engine. This engine supports Heretic, Hexen and Doom. The Doomsday engine is a new engine based on the same methodology as the doom engine. It uses it's own rendering system, all you need is an Iwad and for the game and it's port. In this case.. JDoom uses Doom*.wad with doomsday Same with Heretic. Doomsday + Jheretic + Heretic.wad At the moment Skyjake (the developer) is Unifying all three projects to use the same systems.. all ports use different features, methods. After that well only Skyjake knows that. Read the about page. Jdoom is hosted at Newdoom, Jheretic is hosted at raven games(I think) and so is Jhexen. In Graphics..Jdoom whoops Quite a bit of ass. But you can only say this for games that have GL Support. As far as I can tell tho only Quake and Quake2 have that. And In certain respects Jdoom looks better than Half-Life. But Feature wise....At the moment most games whoop Doomsday here and back. Hexen 2 makes Doomsday look bad and hell it's only an early Quake engine. You can't compare Build and Doomsday just yet. If there was Zdoom support with Jdoom, then yes, Doomsday would have no competition. 0 Share this post Link to post
