The Best "Doom Clone"

I think we've all forgotten Catacomb 3-D. That was one of the coolest Doom clones, but it was made before even Wolfenstein, I think.

Catacomb 3D was the direct predecessor of Wolfenstein 3D: it was programmed by John Carmack and is really the first 'fist person shooter', although it didn't have the impact Wolf3D had.

Katarhyne, I know, I own both games, but everything in Daggerfall is sprite-based, as opposed to Future Shock. And Daggerfall was released only a year later, I think, in 1996, and re-released in 1997 with major bugfixes and more sidequests. And The Elder Scrolls: Arena came out in 1993...so the hell with Catacombs Abyss, Arena was far more indepth than it could ever be, but it was also buggy as hell.

ahh... Daggerfall. One of the best RPGs and FPS games around. Too bad it was really buggy. I played that thing for months on end... back when I had time to play games.

I wasted whole months playing Daggerfall. Nothing more amusing than screwing the main plot and living on your own. :)

Of course, once you had every single piece of your armor made of Daedric Metal, a Daedric Daikatana, 100% in Blade, a ship, a house in Daggerfall, the highest rank in every Guild, and several of those objects you can get by speaking to the Gods and performing some odd quest, the game got way too easy.

Still, I think Daggerfall was so engrossing and brilliant that most MMORPGs are just shit when compared to this classic. I'm one of the many, many fans waiting for Morrowind's release ;)

I'm dying of anticipation for Morrowind. It's been almost as long as Duke Nukem Forever! But it's finally out in a few months. That might be my reason to buy an X-Box.

Dammit, that game sounds so good, but the damn abandonware version I got wouldn't work...crap.

And The Elder Scrolls: Arena came out in 1993...so the hell with Catacombs Abyss

Are you trying to say that it's older that Catacomb 3-D? Catacomb came out in about 1990-91.

Doom clone. hmm... By doom clone you should mean sprite based 2D/3D first person shooters. For me it was Dark Forces. But doom is the only sprite bast game I still play.
With out a doubt I'd have to say that First person shooters are my fav type of game.

I did like duke 3d, Shadow warrior and
Heretic wasn't too bad. Hexen was good, but I never finished it. and strife... Pritty good... but felt a little too much like a doom TC

But I still have not played System Shock. I'm ashamed.

Hey, what about the Fortress of Dr. Radiaki? :P

I bet you thought nobody else ever herd of that did you?

I loved Daggerfall but for some reason the strafe buttons wont work. Can someone help me out?

As for catacombs abyss, it came out before Wolfenstien, so it shouldn't be called a "Doom Clone". But, I own it, and it's suprissingly kewl. It seems to built off of Commander Keen 4, as it has the same interface, graphics, music, even pong game.

Anyone play Blake Stone? It's a Wolfenstien clone, but IMO, it was awsome, as it had such a great variety of enemies, and stuff. It was the first FPS I ever owned (the first FPS I ever seen was wolfenstien, but Blake was the first I owned).

Curiously, I discovered DooM before I discovered Wolfenstein. I first played DooM in early 1994, soon after its release, but only played Wolfenstein in late 1994.

Because Wolfenstein was released before DooM does that make DooM a "Wolfenstein clone"? Heh, don't bother answering; it was just a rhetorical question.

No, I'm not saying Arena came first, I'm saying Arena completely blew it out of hte water, let alone ANY RPG of that time (FFII/VI, move da fuck over, NOW :p), and Daggerfall set the legacy in stone...with just as many annoying bugs :P But they're still awesome games...Daggerfall was the best of 'em, though. And I'm nearing level 20 in Daggerfall, and I still haven't put together a Daedric suit yet. I'm working on an Ebony and an Orcish suit, because they're way harder to get together, even with an item creation spell :p

why not? What afraid of the critters BBG? :P j/k. You'll love it man. Oh, for those that d/l'ed the Daggerfall shareware, it's the worst in the world. Crashes all the time, I know cuz I got it with Terminator: Future Shock.

Yea Daggerfall is a classic, but has anyone ever played Battlespire (The follow up to Daggerfall)

I never played it, but I heared it was incredibly buggy, and boring. I just hope Bethsada takes their time, and releases Morrowind without any bugs. Since it's comming out for the X-Box first (and console games cannot be patched), it should be bug free. But other than that, Morrowind looks great and has great graphics. IMO, the best RPG graphics so far (Ultima Worlds Online might have been close, but it was canceled sadly).

battlespire blew, and this is coming from a hardcore daggerfall fan =P

I'm with Orion. Why is Strife left off this list? That game was the first to do many things now standard in FPS games... for example, story, friendly computer controlled teammates, an inventory system, realworld mechanics (shoot in town? You, sir, are fucked), etc... Strife was the best, and still is the best doom clone there ever was.

I really love Rott. But I was teached that it is more a Wolfenstein3D clone than a Doom clone (I made the same mistake, but I would say it is a complete new game, since it comes with much more features than Wolf. The Rott CD edition box, btw, says on its back:

"Rise of the Triad is sure to have every DOOM freak in the world lining up just to drool all over it"

Hmm, but the game is a splattertastic fun and should be played. I also tried the level randomizer, which makes very nice levels (architecture and lightning is not that important in this game, so almost every level this editor makes is funny).

And I also loved to play ShadowWarrior3D, because it is the same funny and gory thing. The first game that allowed to use hardware like bulldozers and ships to kill enemies :) And skulls popping out of enemies heads like cherrycores. But it becomes a bit boring after some time of play. Doom gives me the better experience.

CyClones and Shadowcaster I discovered in the abandonware and ... CyClones is very cool :)

Do you like Marathon? Marathon2 "Durandal" came also for the PC, but you would miss the original Marathon1 and the fantastic "Marathon Infinity" and it´s fan-made sequels "Evil", "Tempus Irae" and "Rubicon" (also OpenGL). My advice: Grab a Mac Emulator and play some Marathon Infinity, you will love it :)

Has anyone noticed the game "Witchhaven"? Most of its graphics look a bit weird and I have not played it for long. And what about "Techwar"?

I never played Tekwar, but I heard it sucked. And Battlespire isn't as in-depth as Daggerfall. RotT was okay...didn't like it as much as Doom, though. Anyways, I'm going to go play Daggerfall, I need to add some Daggerfall pics to my webpage, anyways :P

You guys forgot Corridor 7 and Strife...

Corridor 7 was more of a Wolfenstien clone, like Blake Stone because it had 90 degree walls, no stairs or buildings with multiple levels, cartoonish enemies, no outdoors, etc

On a side note though, Corridor 7 was horrible.

Hexen would have to be my favourite Doom clone, and it's sequel was even better. Although now I don't play Hexen2 much coz it only supports glide, and software mode crashes if I try to change the resolution. :(

ROTT and Shadow Warrior were fun for a while, but then they got boring. The only games I've never or rarely got bored of are DooM and the Heroes of Might and Magic 2 & 3.

Blake was awesome...it makes Half-Life look like a rip-off with it's interactive scientists and health-giving vending machines. It had some awesome enemies, too, like the soldier who got back up if you didn't hurt him enough or the monsters that came out of pods.

Battlespire is NOT a Daggerfall sequel. The manual clearly states it's not a The Elder Scrolls game, just a game based in the same world. Same with Redguard, wich despite being my favorite class (along with the Nords), it was some pirate thing that never caught me.

Still, it was incredible boring unless you played that one in coop.

Yeah.. all these games were doom clones cause they were all based on the idea of dooms way.. and they wanted a peice of the market that Doom had created..

besides you forgot about..

System Shock(mixed Doom with a full blown RPG adventure), whitchhaven(some stuff like possible to shoot arrows into walls and climb up on them), tekwar(had whole citys as map iirc), shadowcaster (you could morph into different caracters with different strenghts and weaknesses also had swimmable water and such crap)

there's more but. to get to the point.. all these games were stuffed with new and revelotionary stuff.. only problem was that it didn't make them funnier to play.. after the first ahaa experience.. it had little left to offer..

most of hem just didn't have the great gameplay doom offered..

Heretic and Hexen.. was pretty hot though.. but people consideered Heretic to be Doom3 when it came though.. wich wasn't to far from the truth really. if you think about it..

The build engine games.. were in a class of it's own.. I liked them at first but got after a while bored by the gameplay in the build engine.. For many people this was the doom killer..

strife just simply came out to damn late... quake was the hot shit ..

and the rest like ROTT was just so godawful boring to just even look at that noone(exept a select few i guess) could stand to play them more than a few levels and then throw it away and puke all over it.

the daggerfall and those games.. well that's another story.. My brother is playing daggerfall on his 486.. It's buggy as hell and everytime I watch him he seem to be in a really narrow tunnel... and he brags about how many places it got and all that.. you can play forever w/o beating the damn game.. nice I tell him.. what is the difference exept the name of the location of these places.. nothing particular.. maybe the textures..

I prefer System Shock for my FPS-RPG experience.. that game totally owns..

Well, Daggerfall is plagued with bugs, most of them can be fixed with a couple of patchs. Those patchs even assign new debug commands that let you escape from awful megalaberynths and clipping problems. That's enough to play the game without any issues.

Yeah, Daggerfall kinda got repetitive, but that was mostly because the world was generated using particular scripts instead of real efforts. That's why Morrowind's taking so damn long, it's actually being done by artists. Sure, it's like 50x smaller than Daggerfall in terms of world size, but I'm incredibly pleased with what I saw so far.
