1024x1024 Competition

As 1024 maps are all the rage now (or were) I think that they should be in a single group. I'm not saying an Idgames directory kind of group, but maybe a small html file with links to said 1024 maps. Since the 1024 competition was cancelled, and many maps lost or submitted to idgames, It would be much easier to have a list of the 1024 maps to download rather than let them fade into obscurity.


Or, The project could be completed!

Agentspork: don't use my rf_512 map as my main three. Use rf _1024, _10242, and _10243.

You can use _512 as a bonus map if you want though :P

oh, the competition has been cancelled?
looking forward to playing the other maps nevertheless, so csonicgo's idea is good.
i have a newer version of my entry which has some (mostly) cosmetic bugs fixed. now, should i just upload it to newstuff or does somebody plan to release all submitted maps in a pack?

Thanks to all who entered in this competition, and I appologize for how much of a miserable failure this was. Guess that's what happens when someone decides to leave the doom community in the middle of a 6-month long competition and dump it on someone else. :D

1024_neg!ke.wad is also Zdoom-only due to an error. I could only exit in Prboom-plus via the intended route was with the "compatibility with common mapping errors" setting "use passes thru all special lines", but this also makes it trivial to exit the map in just a few seconds. Specifically, the problem is the switch that opens up the exit.

I've just played them all - good quality overall, and well worth playing. In case anyone is interested, I would rank them as follows:

I made some notes about each of them as I was going along, but can't be bothered to type them all out here. The exact order here wasn't the product of a great deal of thought - I mainly just grouped them into three categories and then put them in rough order of preference. I was mainly judging on originality and gameplay. I nudged Dutch Devil's maps down in my rankings a little because they are based on earlier maps of his.

It's like a Doom-level cookie cutter. Take that how you will.

Edit: Just played some 1024 set. rf`'s maps are really good, but dutch's are good too. It's a tough call to compete with something like this...

Well doom became an part of my life its like drugs I must create doom maps I can't stop.
Dunno how many maps ive made this year but it must be more than 10 at least.
Dunno when I will stop I might release less maps next year :)

Dutch, I like your maps, and I don't want you to take offense to this... I think they could be a lot better if you put a lot more time and thought into the designs and less time into using lots of detail and making border sectors for all your lights. As such, I'd be interested to see you design a vanilla-compatible map. Engine limitations would prevent you from using much detail, so you'd have to come up with a fabulous layout to take its place. Like I said, I'm not trying to be mean and I hope you don't take it that way; I like your maps, but interesting layouts are something I think you could improve on.

Just a thought; take it how you will.

Yeah I know thats why I do remakes from time to time make them from scratch and hope it teaches me something.One of the reasons I didn't start on an megawad is because I think I have to improve certain skills.Coming up with an interesting layout is probably the hardest part about mapping.And I'm not such an detail freak anymore lately I am just sick and tired wasting so much time on that part and it doesn't make the map play any better no matter how many detail I cram in it might possibly get only worse.My last two remakes is the style I like to continue with not too much detail but still enough to keep it interesting.

Slow steps but I'm getting there sooner or later :) as along as I enjoy mapping I keep doing it.

Actually from the maps that I've played (and I think I've played most of DD's maps), he is one of the few mappers that manage to make their maps look really nice without overdetailing by using the right texture combinations. He also uses his style of detailing in a way that doesn't hurt the gameplay at all. Even if some map didn't shine in the gameplay area I couldn't blame it on the detailing in any case.

The layouts of his maps are only rarely flawed by being somewhat symmetric, and are usually good or sometimes even exceptionally well done (with both non-linearity and potential for some interesting demo recording).

That's true, but the maps feel/look very 'safe', and 'by the book' to me, like he's not taking chances with innovating design or atypical texture choices, everything is nice and..predictable. Again just my opinion.

I generated a text file to make mine more archive compatible, which meant renaming the wad to 8.3 format thus "cyc1024.wad"

Hey Dutch please don't take my comment the wrong way, you're obviously a skilled mapper and I haven't played any of your maps I flat out didn't like, but check out pretty much anything by Anthony Soto, or Jan Van der Veken, Gwen William's megawad Vile Flesh also has some great maps with unconventinal textures that hardly look ugly imo, the early scythe1 maps shake things up a bit, TVR! is also full of maps that are just a blast to play and really break the mold in terms of looks. And not to toot my own horn, I'm pretty proud of my own work in cc1 and my vanilla episode which like essel suggested had to sacrifice detail and size for gameplay and progrssion! ;)

Looking forward to your new map Tainted Waters, haven't seen anything made with that texture set on that scale in some time.

Edit: Oh and before I forget, grab anything by Espi and check out Kama Sutra, those guys clearly play alot of Doom! Newer stuff should also include VV2, which has spacious layouts, and some change dynamically as you complete sections of the map...

No of course I don't take it the wrong way :)
Ive played Vae Victus 2 and I loved the mapset because of the cool layouts.
Kama sutra was pretty cool as well I think im going play it again.
