That is a test of new rendering code using a fog map. It is not OpenGL fog. Any colormap that fades to a solid color should work well. Sprites and the player weapon are not done yet.

Have you considered using pixel shaders instead if hardware support is present?

I guess pixel shaders make all things possible, so it would make a lot of sense to use them, but they don't interest me right now. Legacy are doing some shader stuff. Does Doomsday use them yet?

No, Doomsday does not currently utilize pixel shaders for anything. This will change in the 1.9.x series as we plan to utilize them extensively. We haven't yet decided whether we'll have a non-shader-based render path once we do implement support.
