Windows95 Blues

Recommended Posts

d'oh! Well, it was Win95, then I switched to Win98...my bad.

Hehe ;)

Yeah I made that mistake too, downgrading from Win95 to 98 when it was first released. In fact the only reason I bought the full Win98 anyways was because there was a price mix-up at the store I saw it in and they had labelled one of the boxes as $89.00 (the price of the upgrade) instead of $189.00. I went back later that day and they had written ones in front of all the price tags :)

Damnit, I'm having a new problem now. The computer randomly freezes every hour or so for about a minute at a time. My freind said I should probably defrag the hard drive, but whenever I try to defrag the C drive, it keeps restarting because the drive changes, never being able to finish. I think it might be because of the freezes. Its a damn paradox.

Close EVERYTHING before doing that. You should only have Explorer and Systray open in the Control-Alt-Delete menu before running a defrag.

Also, when it restarts like that, it usually just picks up where it left off.

What Lüt said. Also, run Scandisk (on the Standard setting) before you run Defrag for the best results.

Easier said then done. Depends on one's system. Some things are VERY hard to get rid of since they load at startup. Use Win98's MSCONFIG to temporarily disable - ending tasks by task killing is not the best way (no cleanup done). One of many cool things in Win98.

The main culprit is -usually- Norton Anti-virus (or other anti-virus software). I run defrag with all sorts of stuff in the background. So long as they don't have any disk activity, no problem. Experiment and see which ones are ok. It is a good idea to stop those that are easy to manage. Win98 makes this a breeze:)

Also, when it restarts like that, it usually just picks up where it left off.

It starts ALL over - watch the progress bar - on a large drive (or slow system) with lots of folders/files very noticablea and very slow. It just goes faster since it already has "defragged" part of the drive. The reason it restarts is that it doesn't know what/where any potential change might have occurred.

For a lot of bang for your buck, the Norton disk utilities do a whiz job here. WAY faster. Makes you wonder why MS didn't license them again. I only use the defrag/scandisk proggies.

I paid the money for all the Norton shit and did I ever get any less crashes/freezes?
No, I got more, plus the Norton shit takes up loads of space, fucks around with so much stuff I can't remember, and looks shit. Apart from that it rocks ;) End of piece.

I love norton, fixes my pc everytime, even when it doesn't want to boot up, I take my rescue disk and manage to fix it. Best part is I got it free.

the trouble with anti-virus stuff is that if a brand new menacing virus is out there, like the iloveyou was at the time, it ain't gonna do shit...

hmm don't ask me, I only got one virus since I got the program (ages ago)... hmm or is it that I just don't know if I got a virus. Oh well, if I can't notice it, it doesn't bother me.

I didn't format my pc in a long time, like 5-6 months. I bet something bad happens to my pc in the next few weeks.
