Those zimmer 1-4 textures aren't grass. They're probably stucco, rough cement or hard mud (when brown.)

So what do you think this piece of machinery is?

An imp grinder! I can see a few imps piled up in the distance, ready for processing. The UAC initially started the gates to Hell because they noticed imp flesh tastes like chicken.

Hmm that scrolling idea sounds good. my problem with light v dark is that I'm using straight linedefs and not sectors for these energy bars. There wouldn't happen to be a boom light transfer special for walls eh? otherwise it's a bit more complicated -.-

I do think the inverted coloring looks better for energy flow though, so I think I'll switch em around and add scrolling for the ON switch.

EDIT: lol myk. I'll see about adding that in somewhere :P
2; I'll also probably change them to straight mud then, it's not exactly a vegetation rich area.

Also wth is wrong with tinypic, it was english for me just a few hours ago -.-

Your computer has entered an alternate reality where the Allies lost WW2. German is now the main language of the world and the problems with Israel, er, don't exist anymore.

It'd be interesting to see Doom's graphics represented as well as possible within sixteen colours. You'd have to retool all the sprites and textures, so that they would actually still look like something recognizable within that palette. It'd be more work than it's worth. But still: interesting.

I would play it with PC speaker emulation and a joystick.

There are at least a few palette mods on idgames. Some look better than others, a couple are quite convincing. Good idea to play with PC Speaker :) Chocolate emulates that btw.

Not only can it emulate the PC speaker, it can output to one.

Oh really? I had no idea. I must give that a shot on my old K6...

I don't really like when people recolor the standart textures like that (even though it's done in a lot of good wads), but i have to agree, that looks really good.

Nor do I. Most people tend to oversaturate them, many of the red/blue/green/orange variants are too bright and vibrant, not a subtle color depth like the GSTONE or BROWN/BRONZE.

As a result you get an over-colorful assault on your eyes, like making an entire level out of the red BRICK11 and blue ZZWOLF9.

The calmer brown Malinku has chosen for the bricks contrasts nicely with the red/pink detailing. The design looks very attractive, and the colors complement and draw your eye to the detail whilst setting a good background mood as well.

I really like the layout and the architecture in malinku's shots.

But I am not so sold on the color schemes.

I would still be pretty interested to play the finished levels when they are ready. Good luck malinku with them. :)

That looks really good. What map is that?

I don't know what map it is, but it looks pretty good. It has Agent Spork's style written all over it. He is one of the few people I have seen who can mix grays and browns and not have it look like a total noob effort.

Quick screenshot from a silly little Heretic map I've been messing around with. Focusing less on detail and more on speed and flow, and so far the very little I have is pretty fun.

Well, then you've got one up on the actual Heretic maps!

One mans' trash is another man's treasure? I thought it had some exceptionally bad level design, but I guess overall wasn't THAT bad.

Some bad levels, some good.

My friend hippocat likes heretic more than doom (i think), and that always stumbled me - how could there exist such an opinion in a world that seems otherwise logical and familiar? Oh well. He does also like anime and giant robots.

I think the problem with Heretic is the lack of texture options. The layouts (of the few maps I've bothered to play) is decent enough to flow well, but it seems there are about 12 wall textures and they use maybe 4 of them.

Some levels are just a maze of that fucking mossy rock texture, which looks pretty poor in the first place.

Honestly, I really like Heretic's levels, textures, everything. Now, I should admit that it's hard for me to look at Heretic's level design with a critical eye, because I first started playing that game when I was much younger, and back then, if there was a part of a level that I didn't like to play, it never occurred to me to blame the game's designers. I didn't think of games as having been made by people. They just were, and though Heretic had some rough spots, that's just how the game was, and I was more than willing to take the bad with the good, because I couldn't imagine Heretic being any different. That feeling towards Heretic has lasted to this day.

As for the textures, they are limited, but I never realized that until I tried mapping with them, which is a testament to the texturing abilities of the original mappers. Despite the limited tools available, the game manages to provide unique scenery on most levels.

It's fair to say that the textures have a fake, flat appearance. They're very drawn. But, for that matter, so are the sprites, so once again it all fits into coherent aesthetic. I think Heretic textures look great with each other. They don't look bad until you add some gritty, "realistic" textures to your wad and stick those next to the originals.
