Please don't remind me about Enr. Calc II. I'm trying to put those memories behind me... *whimper*

Negative infinity exists, if you're talking about a value proceeding infinitly in the negative direction on an axis.

Any real number times zero is zero. Any real number times infinity is infinity. Zero times infinity is its own special little headache that requires scary, arcane methods to solve. So is one to the power of infinity. You've gotta It's an "irresistable force vs. immovable object" problem.

You know you're an engineering student if you've gotten this far without your brain exploding. :)

But look at it this way:
There's no such thing as -0 so why should there be something like negative infinite. On a grid with an x and y axis it does make sence, but still, just saying, or proposing a thought.

no, infinity is not a "Number" per se, its more like a variable (but not excactly) so the 0 x infinite is an invalid equation, like 0 x X where x is undefined. Not enough info

Consider this: A={All real numbers} B={All integers}
Domain A is infinate, and domain B is infinate, yet domain A is larger than domain B.

Sadly, I understand all this blabber even though I'm only in Geometry. :P

Calculus isn't supposed to make sense. It's supposed to hurt you deeply while imparting the techniques to plumb the darkest secrets of the theoretical universe. But nothing actaully makes sense until you take Applied Calc, come senior year. :)

Hmm! Interesting, although I wonder why I have a nagging suspicion that A is in fact larger than B. ??? Oh well.

D'oh...I'll have to fix that.

What's more interesting is the fact, that although natural numbers (i.e positive integers - 1,2,3 and so) are only a small part of all the rational numbers, there total number of natural numbers is equal to the total number of rational numbers.

Also, the number of numbers between 0.00000001 and 0.00000002 is equal to the total number of numbers from -inf to +inf.

And also, the number of points on a line is equal to the number of points in 3D space.

And regarding this problem, it can be proven, that in fact, there is an infinite number of infinities.

And about the original issue, yes, you are right: Googol = 10^100. Googolplex = 10^googol = 10^(10^100)). But since not all people are familiar with these names, I just said 10^100.

On a related note, what about infinite precision?

0.99999999999999999999..... <infinite 9's> is the same number as 1. It has exactly the same properties.

It's infinitely little smaller than 1, and infinitely little has to be 0, right? =]

Though it's odd to think of integers as x.99999....

Yes, and not only integers. Any rational number, whose fractional part is an integer divided by a power of 10 can be written in two ways, with an infinite (optional) number of zeroes or with an infinite number of nines.

For example:

0.453 = 0.45300000000000... = 0.452999999999999...

Mathmaticians live in made up worlds. Numbers do not physically exist. They are only a method for humans to organize their rocks and wives.

I would love to see see where humanity would have gotten if not for numbers/math. I wish I could insert that timeline pic here. =]

I'm not denying that they are important. I am simply stating that there are no physical numbers in the universe. They are not literal in the manner that the sun is literal. The sun is there. YOU CAN SEE IT. YOU CAN FEEL IT. You cannot see numbers. You cannot feel numbers. They are a concept.

And I wish I could insert the "READ MY DAMN POST BEFORE ACTIVATING YOUR ORAL CAVITY" pic (that does not yet exist) here.

and exactly where the fuck did you write "I am not denying that numbers are important" in the post you made above mine (not this one)? If anything by saying that they are only a method of recognizing rocks and wifes would suggest you think they are not important.

Therefore I did read your fucking post, so now why don't you think before you try and answere me.

BTW, You anoy the fuck out of me you dumbass.

There's actually this neat concept called not putting words into my mouth.

For example, in my post about mathmaticians, I did not say that I denied that numbers are important. I did not say that I DIDN'T deny that numbers are important. Therefore, I took no position in the post. You took my obviously sarcastic remarks as nonsarcastic remarks and assigned me a position on the issue when I never made one.

Therefore I did read your fucking post, so now why don't you think before you try and answere me.

Yes, you read my fucking post and read into my fucking post, failing to recognize the sarcasm.

This is Doomworld, remember? This place TEEMS with sarcasm, but of course you'd know that since you have the almighty 1000+ posts in three months.

BTW, You anoy the fuck out of me you dumbass.

Cool off or don't read or reply to my posts. You too annoy me with your pretentious attitudes and actions but I do not resort to namecalling because I know that I am reading your posts by choice. If anyone is to blame for my being annoyed by you, it is me, and visa versa.

Only Doomworld could turn a discussion about higher math into a flame war.

Heh, that's true. I'm gonna try to stay logical and civilized in this one though. :)

I don't care what you say, that does not sound the least bit like sarcasm. If anything that is an explanation and an example of how they are not important. If you were to leave out that "only" out of the statement your point would have been a lot more clear. No, it still would not be considered sarcasm, but at least it would have been more of a defining of what they mean to you rather than an example that's degrading to their importance.

A Flame War is not something to get upset about. Arguments will arise, there's no real point in trying to avoid them. This forums description even says "Flame On!" so it is taken under consideration that vulgar arguing most likely will occur due to the topics that are being handled here. As we both witnessed even something like Math might result in a flame war.

This war is over an interpretation of sarcasm ultimately. Old-fashioned failure to communicate I'd think (or maybe not, I can't read your mind, only your posts).

A Flame War is not something to get upset about.

Flame wars are fun when they are about arguments and positions. It reminds me of times when people attack Clinton or GW personally and pretend that they are attacking the person's actions or policies.

Arguing yes, pointless namecalling is boring. And to... dammit, I lost my train of thought.

It did sound like it was intended to degrade the importance of math though. Sorry if that offends anyone who owns a rock collection.

ShadyXMR:

Actually if I said what orion said, it would have been because I considered it to be sarcastic. I would have figured you were one of those "I would be happy living like an indian and surviving off the land" type of people.

Ahem.

sar·casm n.
1. Witty language used to convey insults or scorn

Ok so maybe it lacks some on the "witty" part. But it did sound like an insult to math.
