Hmm... which project wouldn't have won, then, if that had been nominated? It's pretty hard to decide which of the other nine is the weakest.

NMD2 was good. The maps felt as if they were made by the original id team in 1993.

No, I'm not exaggerating.

If you keep saying things like this, NMD3 is going to suck.

JohnnyRancid I agree completely but that's just Scuba's taste in maps, he's always been at the far end of the purist-innovator scale and that's fair enough. I think he and Patrick more or less got the choices for this year's good classic maps right anyway...

...I would have swapped Gravity and Cybersky - the latter was pretty much map of the year for me - and added in Disturbia which I thought was the best of DeathDestiny's flood of maps over summer, oh and probably tacked on an "and here's some you might have missed" section in one of the sidebars so I could mention stuff like 32innail (map05 is genius)...

I would have to agree that 32 Inch Nails Map05 was one of the best maps that didn't make it into the Cacowards. Myself being the original reviewer of that wad when it appeared, the atmosphere of the main area just blew me away, especially when you take into consideration the restrictions imposed on the making of that mapset. The rest of the wad was still pretty decent even without Map05 though, but for anyone who hasn't played that map, you should go fire it up, even if you cheat or use the -nomonsters tag, it's certainly worth looking. (I myself compared it to the original Deus Vult, map02 specifically)

Thanks for the Caco and Mordeth awards, but I'm quite disappointed that there were no mention of Hokuto no Iceman57 anywhere in the spread =(

...There should be something to be said about what is currently the 3rd biggest PH'ed thread in DWF history =p

I agree with each word. My favorite maps in 32innail are map02 and map05, but the rest of maps are very, very cool and atmospheric too.

I have asked Eternal about his opinion and he said 32innail and cybersky are best his wads in this year. Of course, gravity is original and he spent much time for shadows and detailed architecture for good looking, but it is not The Best Of The Year. Gravity is just common wad and probably it is the reason of loving. Anybody can play gravity, even girls can play gravity :), but cybersky is not for all.

Yeah, if Eternal would stop making good levels, it would be easier to pick the best :P

Cybersky was very impressive... I've just never been a big fan of 10,000 monster, BFG slaughterfests. 32in Nails was really good, but a lot of the levels just seemed "meh" despite a lot of good ones. Remain III was ALMOST one of the winners (The first few levels were meh, but the later levels were really amazing), but at the last second, Patrick and I changed it to Gravity. I just like to see unique and creative levels done with Doom. I felt that Gravity was more unique than the others.

Every year someone always says "there are too many ZDoom maps". There usually are a lot of ZDoom maps, that's true, but to be fair, a LOT of levels are made for ZDoom. Very few people make vanilla maps, and even fewer of those are great maps. With ZDoom having such a large community, it follows that lots of people would make maps for it. I've nominated several Legacy maps, vanilla, Limitless. Additionally, source ports have allowed people to make more creative maps, so I would expect to have more source port winners than non.

Remain III was one of my favourites, along with DVII. Some cool MP wads too like the 32in24 wads, Shinobi FFA 2 and Epic CTF.

Fixed, since there are too few. Still there's Kristus with his, we have the community Heretic wad and hopefully I'll have my Hexen wad finished too. (since I'm mapping a bit more actively atm)

Actually, as of right now there are very few servers on Skulltag that have Dwango 5... :|

It only takes 1...look at ZDCTF, they only have 1 public server on each side of the pond (as opposed to ZD's blanket coverage) and it takes up the same proportion of playing time.

I don't think ZPack was *that* bad, and while the Thunderpeak levels were among the best levels in it, I think there is also 6 or 7 excellent maps and that the average quality should prolly match a Community Project's.

Anyway, again a big year of releases from Eternal. My favorite from this year being 32 in nails, I just love the atmosphere.

And almost forgot, happy birthday Doom !

I'm surprised that people seem to have these high expectations on this wad I'm messing with. I don't even know if it'll be out before the end of next Doom year. And when I'm not going for bells and whistles like with Phobia, who knows? It might suck really bad.
