danarchist Posted December 31, 2001 There are no "facts" in any science; it's all theory. So, its just a 'theory' that we all fall towards the ground instead of up? Its just a 'theory' that clouds are the gaseous forms of water? Its just a 'theory' that reproduction occurs as the result of an interaction between male sex cells and female sex cells? Think before you speak. 0 Share this post Link to post

Fredrik Posted December 31, 2001 It's just a theory that you are NOT annoying. 0 Share this post Link to post
CapNapalm Posted December 31, 2001 Mathematics apply only if you accept the fact that certain things are objective. From a philosophical standpoint you could easily argue that everything is subjective. Mathematics can not prove all. 0 Share this post Link to post

Nothing can be "proven" in the realm of science. You don't do experiments to prove or disprove something; you do 'em to see if they support or deny the pertinant theory. If another theory is presented, and evidence gathered in experiments supports the new theory better than the old, the old one is dropped like an empty shell. I'm surprised a self-proclaimed "scientist" didn't know this. Think before you speak... or maybe have someone else do your thinking before you speak. ;) 0 Share this post Link to post
Fredrik Posted December 31, 2001 True facts are true facts even if no one knows about them. The "proof" thing only relates to humans. Humans question these facts, and need "proof" to believe they are true. How true something is to humans depends on how convinced they are about it, as 1+1 would still be 2 even if no one believed it. 0 Share this post Link to post

What kind of retard would ask about the meaning of life anyway? </sarcasm> 0 Share this post Link to post
Fredrik Posted January 1, 2002 Philosophy just gets confusing when you combine it with the insufficient human language. 0 Share this post Link to post
danarchist Posted January 1, 2002 I'm surprised a self-proclaimed "scientist" didn't know this. Oddsbodskins! I never said I was a scientist. I've claimed to be a lot of things: an atheist, an intellectual, a hippy, a rivet-head...but never a scientist. 0 Share this post Link to post

I've claimed to be a lot of things: an atheist, an intellectual, a hippy, a rivet-head...but never a scientist. You're right, my bad. I was just running with this quote over in the "What kind of God" thread:Ummm, no. I do have beliefs, true. I believe in science, I believe in myself, I believe that one day humanity can be saved from its stupidity. But I do not worship anything. There are no great powers out there that I can worship. 0 Share this post Link to post
Fredrik Posted January 1, 2002 The real answer to the original question is actually neither of the above... Science is ice cream. 0 Share this post Link to post
dsm Posted January 1, 2002 Science is ice cream. Yummy! *me eats science 0 Share this post Link to post
Red_Warrior Posted January 1, 2002 Science is ice cream. So if I try to eat science, I'll vomit? What? I'm lactose intolerant and ice cream is a deathwish! Although if one tried to also eat all of the books containing scientific knowledge, you would still become ill.... 0 Share this post Link to post
dsm Posted January 1, 2002 So if I try to eat science, I'll vomit? What? I'm lactose intolerant and ice cream is a deathwish! Really? Poor you, you're missin' out on some great stuff. Ah well, at least there are other nice things to eat in this world. 0 Share this post Link to post
deadnail Posted January 1, 2002 You're all wrong. Mathematics is a LANGUAGE, and supposedly the universal language that will link all of us together one day. On the other hand, Fredrik. Yo. You just said that people need proof to believe something, right? If no one believed 1+1=2 it would still = 2 no matter who believed it or not, right? Well, what if people had false theories and they really thought that 1+1=11? What if no one questioned these theories and they were all just blindly accepted as fact? Proof is what makes a theory plausible. I could say that the whole world was created the first time I took a shit. You could tell me precisely when the universe was created, down to the millisecond. Don't believe either, not without a whole hell of a lot of explaining. =) 0 Share this post Link to post
Bane Posted January 1, 2002 Mathematics is a LANGUAGE you're right, it's our mathematics teacher's native language. I hate maths, cuz i suck at it. I hate maths lessons, and teacher doesn't like our class. 0 Share this post Link to post

dsm Posted January 2, 2002 Ok, here's a definition of a language: System of acoustic symbols, which makes it possible for people to communicate messages to eachother. Ls change through time so that the original L is split into sublanguages and dialects. Here's a definition of maths: Science devoted to drawing up abstract models of thought (not sure how to translate that) fit for describing phenomenons and solve problems in connection with the practical/physical reality or in connection with other scientific theories. Now, tell me what you make of this. 0 Share this post Link to post
sleepy_boy Posted January 3, 2002 This is the answer to everything... Ignoreance is bliss Examples: Ever seen those anti-smoking ad's where they show a dead smoker's lung. Wouldn't you have been happier id you had never seen that? know-it-alls are always whiny, unhappy people who die alone... As for Math, english, and science: If learning is so natural, why do we go to school? 0 Share this post Link to post
dsm Posted January 3, 2002 If learning is so natural, why do we go to school? It's natural that adults teach kids about things. Schools have lots of adults, whose job it is to teach things to kids, while the kids parents don't have time. 0 Share this post Link to post
