Gamasutra, a gaming news and game development job posting site has decided to start providing archived issues of its Game Development Magazine online, and which did they start with? Doom of course! From the article:

Starting a new column reprinting classic Game Developer magazine articles, this January 1994 premiere issue article goes behind the scenes of Id Software's Doom, talking to John Carmack and revealing technical specifics of the seminal game's creation.

While there may not be any new information in general it's still a fun read, and who doesn't like reading a bit more of how Doom came about?

Doom 4 to have a storyline? I can see the reviews now - "While Doom 4 lacks the raw, visceral charm of it's predecessors - that's more than adequately compensated for by the 192 page storyline which earns the game maximum points for literary merit."

The archived article is a nice find.

Wow, didn’t know that the enemies for doom were models that were digitized... interesting, interesting :-P ! I want those models!

The console system that Id is now looking at is the Atari Jaguar. The Id designers were very excited about it initially and were going to develop for it after they completed the SNES version of Doom. Id is betting that Atari will ship over 500,000 Jaguar consoles. After their experience with Nintendo, the Id designers decided to primarily work for the Atari Jaguar.

Atari failed due to this guy. He may be one of the most hated electronics businessmen ever. He made his family employees, screwing everyone else that had worked so hard in the process. Then he proceeded to fire everybody.


There is no excuse for the damage that he has done. He chewed up Atari and spit it out on a company destined for failure, and now a fucking French company owns the rights to a once-golden trademark and name, and are whoring it out on shitty game after shitty game.

You're being a bit harsh on Jack. He took over the hardware side of Atari when it was on life-support and stepped away when it was trading profitably. Unfortunately his talent for identifying and exploiting emerging trends doesn't appear to have been passed on to his son.

Very cool article. I hope that other magazines follow this lead, as there were many exclusive photographs from Doom's development that cannot be found outside the pages of these old mags.

Attention should also be brought to the fact that the article contains another shot of Punchatz's (original?) Spider Mastermind model.

Whats interesting about the article is where ID said that after all the problems Nintendo had with Wolfenstein 3D on the SNES, ID weren't going to work with Nintendo again and yet later on they did end up making not just a port to the SNES but also one to the Nintendo 64. Be interesting to see the story of what went on behind the scenes to make ID change their mind.

Absolutely nothing changed, as both Doom for the SNES and N64 were developed by Williams/Bally/Midway, and not by id.

The only console port that was developed internally by id was the Jaguar one.
