the_filthy_beast Posted February 14, 2009 I hope this doesn't turn out to be like Quake 4 where you have stupid corny soldiers around you all the time. This is Doom. It's you and the demons. That's the way it should be. 0 Share this post Link to post
999cop Posted February 15, 2009 lol, they're going to put Alyx in it alongside you 0 Share this post Link to post
Creaphis Posted February 15, 2009 And roughly 65% of the game will be building see-saws. 0 Share this post Link to post
GreyGhost Posted February 16, 2009 And the other 35% waiting for NPC's to finish their monologues. Doom 4 - Plagiarism Purgatory on Earth. 0 Share this post Link to post
Joshy Posted February 16, 2009 And the game will be 100% subtitled/captioned. Oh wait... 0 Share this post Link to post
printz Posted February 16, 2009 By the way, Doom 3 already had civilians. But I doubt they'll repeat much of the talking from Doom 3, because it's really not id's style to spam the player with role-playing drama. I'll want to see lost souls roam the city skies. Even Ultimate Doom had some, notably in E4M3, where lost souls were so far up ahead, that they looked like seagulls. 0 Share this post Link to post
Ganymede Posted February 16, 2009 If they make the sort of gameplay changes they did between Doom 1 and 2 I might, *might* be interested. I want to feel utterly surrounded by monsters (with many on screen at once) and be in wide open spaces. But all this will be moot if the enemy design is as drivellingly banal as Doom 3 where each monster is a chore to kill (AKA intelligent AI) - they should be demonic, stupid animals; that's what makes thems scary. And I don't care about next generation graphics or advancing a meaningless, boring, "realistic" plot, I care about gameplay! Oh just re-release Doom 2 with some new levels, I'll buy it. 0 Share this post Link to post
geo Posted February 17, 2009 Fighting side by side with civilians? Fighting is such a loose term. Fighting could mean they are in the fight like every American is in the war against terror. That does not mean they are actively physically fighting... 0 Share this post Link to post
DeumReaper Posted February 17, 2009 No they probably are fighting since the interviewed guy was doing mo-cap for civilian postures holding guns. His comments were that when capturing the soldier characters he had to look more 'trained' and the civilians holding the gun more 'loosely.' 0 Share this post Link to post
Enjay Posted February 17, 2009 Zaldron said:For the same reason you don't hire a chef to act in a movie. They had to mocap hundreds of moves, some of them pertaining to soldier maneuvers. Acting, physical prowess and more importantly, experience with mocap rigs are essential skills for this kind of job. Animation data must be cleaned and properly retooled to cycle and interpolate smoothly, it really helps to have someone who can do the animator's job easier. Precisely my my point. All I was saying is that in certain situations it also helps to have an expert in the field to look at what has been done and tidy up the bits that aren't as authentic as they should be (with due consideration for what is entertainment versus reality as well, of course). 0 Share this post Link to post
Khorus Posted February 17, 2009 That would be a rather large strain to their budget to do that with each field though. I think it's easier to just get away with looking like it could be real to those who aren't a specialist. 0 Share this post Link to post
geo Posted February 17, 2009 They should call MoKap from Mortal Kombat. I have a stuntman friend that did motion capture for a few video games. One game he did was for a movie and one of the movie stars was offended that my friend was better at the action sequences for the game than the star was in the movie, so the star had him fired. It was amazing how someone with no input in the project of a video game could have the power to get someone fired. 0 Share this post Link to post

Pirx Posted February 18, 2009 udderdude said:Why even bother calling it Doom at this point? Civilian NPCs fighting with you? Fuck that. this will slow down gameplay, as you'll have those civilians getting in the way everywhere you don't need them, or, even worse, fellow bot marines that are more useless than the worst co-op buddies on a public server. such gaming experience emulates rather half-life 2 than doom 2. scripted sequences are nice when you're playing a game for the first time, but they get boring quickly. just watch this (otherwise remarkable) HL2 speedrun, and its a pain to see how the player has to spend half the time waving his mouse and zooming on alyx' butt because he can't do a thing to go on. 0 Share this post Link to post
Captain Toenail Posted February 18, 2009 Would everyone be happier if they simply made 32 epic maps with a slightly improved version of the original engine, with new textures and perhaps a new boss or monster thrown in, instead of going to the new id tech engine, oh wait, that wouldn't sell, would it? That's what I would like to see, anyway, heh. 0 Share this post Link to post

Not that I genuinely hate Doom, but really, Doom 4 ought to be different, and have a higher engine. Everyone can make epic maps if given the time and imagination, and quite often will release them freely. A slightly improved engine can be considered ZDoom or JDoom or GZDoom or Eternity. Everyone with artistic talent (and again no money profit) can make textures, and similarly everyone can program a new boss. And an id tech engine will sell, towards other developpers, at least. Maybe that post was a joke, but I heard it enough already to get fed up of it. So get over it. If it's to come out from a company, it will be a new GAME that's supposed to sell to the masses, not a mere MOD for a 15-year old game. 0 Share this post Link to post
Captain Toenail Posted February 18, 2009 heh, yeah, I just wanted to see what the reaction was here at Doomworld :P What I really want to see is something like a new megawad, but it should be in glorious hi-def 3D, not one of these story-driven linear track shooters but perhaps something like Quake 2, where the levels have exploration. They should also keep the original monster and weapon designs, but that's not likely 0 Share this post Link to post

This sounds like a pre-Quake, post-Duke Nukem 3d argument. Happy memories... With Id I imagine they all sit down and think "right, we can do absolutely anything, anything at all, whatever we decide, there are no limitations, it can be done - any ideas?" Personally, I think they should just give up and release a hi-def, ultra-realistic sex game. 0 Share this post Link to post

Texas Libra Posted February 20, 2009 Civilians, eh? Sounds like the plot of the "Hell on Earth" novel to me. 0 Share this post Link to post
geo Posted February 20, 2009 What about this idea... civilians are fighting, but then lost souls tear through them and they are converted into zombies within 10 seconds. What about that? Is that satasfying? I bet I'm right! 0 Share this post Link to post
