The weapons and monster balance is great, what else can you ask for?

I admit that some of the monsters are great (love the Ogres, Fiends and Shamblers), though.

Yes, Quake has a terrific weapon balance.


Hmm, funny that I keep hearing the opposite.
Anyway, I won't dig any further into the discussion as it seems to me that Quake1 is one of some peoples' favorite games (and I know that I hate when people bash MY favorite games).

Fiends and Shamblers rule; Ogres are way too powerful IMHO.

Well, actually fiends and shamblers are way too powerful too. But shamblers are supposed to be powerful, and fiends are just so damn cool.

Ogres are annoying.

Of course.

You get just what you need and nothing else. You're usually always right on the edge of running low on ammo but still having just enough to complete the required scene. Keeps you on your tip-toes all the way through.

Yeah, Doom was much easier in that sense. But of course, since doom was the first real FPS, the difficulty had to be low.

You get just what you need and nothing else. You're usually always right on the edge of running low on ammo but still having just enough to complete the required scene. Keeps you on your tip-toes all the way through.


You get *just* what you need?
I always finish the maps having loads of ammo, leaving a few ammo crates behind me - just like Doom. Anyway, I thought we were talking weapons balance - not ammo balance.

And the thing is: The rocket launcher is a better weapon than that sucky lightning gun = lousy balance of weapons. Anyway, most of the weapons in Q1 sucks compared to Doom's - the shotguns are both wimpy, the nailguns are lousier versions of the chaingun (slow projectile speed), and I've already mentioned the Lightning gun.

I only like the grenade launcher and the Rocket launcher.

But this is only my opinion.

heh, only thing i remember about quake1 was horrible sounds, tehy made me almost deaf.

Quake1's weapons:

Axe - Who cares
Shotgun - Lame
Double-barreled shotgun - Kickass weapon, good feeling
Nailgun - Sucks. Too slow and very ugly
Super nailgun - One of the sweetest weapons ever. Whoo.
Grenade launcher - Yay. Spread 'em out
Rocket launcher - Big brown metal penis
Thunderbolt - Kill people in DM :P

Q1 is a damn good game. The gameplay rocks. Although some of the weapons suck, they ARE well balanced. The monsters too. Ogres rule.

Q1 is a damn good game. The gameplay rocks. Although some of the weapons suck, they ARE well balanced. The monsters too. Ogres rule.


The double-barreled shotgun has a decent sound, but seeing as how I usually expect the Db shotgun to make a deafening roar, this one sounds wimpy in comparison to Doom 2's or Q2's.
Super Nailgun - has cool firing sounds - but at the time Q1 was released I expected minigun-based weapons to at least have a spin-up delay (id didn't put that into a game until Q2!).

I expected Q1 to have some new gameplay ideas - it had none worth mentioning. That's one out of many reasons why Q1 turned me off.
Q2 is a damn good game too, much cooler weapons, but it's just too easy.

Arh, yeah, the sounds in Quake are crap (what else would you expect of something nIn?). But the weapons are still good.

As far as Quake2 goes, it's really cool with the graphics, weapons, etc. I just think the whole story thing in the game is not very convincing. I hope they stay away from too much story in DOOM3.

Well, in today's games its hard to not have a story. Back in the doom days they couldn't play in-game videos and all that fun stuff. If it's story driven like HL but still keeps the doom flavor I'll like it

Sorry to break yer hope, mate, but id has already said that they are going for a strong story.

Personally, I'm happy about Doom 3 having a story.

Yeah, well, I have no problem with a story. But when you get cutscenes and TOO many "mission objectives", then it gets boring.

I wouldn't mind a few cutscenes - as long as your character doesn't appear in them.

Mission objectives don't seem too likely as the game seems to be having the same survival-horror theme to it as the old games.

I wouldn't mind a sort of field computer analyzing the situation and coming with suggestions (not always the best ones) to how you proceed - as long as the whole gameplay isn't built up around it like Q2's.

I agree, no field computer. Not excessive amounts of objectives either.
