id and Zenimax, Sitting in a Tree

the competition with the publishers' own shooters.

Well, that seemed more like the reason why they didn't sell themselves to Activision, rather than a specific conflict which could have also been sorted out by changing publishers.

I don't think ZeniMax will meddle much with id, at least in the short and medium term, but eventually, if ZeniMax is in some sort of trouble, they might sell the id franchises and product lines to someone else who may use them in a retarded fashion. Still, that would not be much different from id just disappearing, but the creators did lose some hold on their own creations.

Just be glad it wasn't EA. For a fact I read somewhere bout how said developer might be acquired by (wait for it) Disney. :O

I have questions:

Does this mean an open world Doom that takes place on Mars, Earth, Phobos, Demios and Hell? or does Bethesda do that?

Does this mean we will have to wait until 2015 before we play Doom 4?

Does this mean Zenimax is just the publisher that will physically make the game discs instead of being involved with the making of Doom 4?

Unlikely. Being owned by the same parent company rarely means anything other than the big shareholders are one and the same. Then again, Ensemble (which, just like Bungie, is owned by Microsoft) did do Halo Wars, so you never know for sure. Still, it's very unlikely.

Rage probably isn't even nearly done yet, so I guess 2015 for Doom 4 would have been realistic in the first place.

From the press release linked to in the news post:

Bethesda Softworks will publish the titles of id Software other than upcoming releases previously committed to other publishers.

So Bethesda will be printing the discs. :P And most likely that'll be all they're doing.

Uhm. there are two different teams working on the two different games. Anyway, Rage will probably be out next year.

And in this case, there are no shareholders.

Carmack did allude to "fun little crossover things" in one of the interviews but no main title from either team will be developed in collaboration. So, do not expect a "The Doomed Scrolls" RPG on Mars or a "Rageout" shooter.

Honestly, I don't really care. I pretty much lost interest in Id after playing Doom 3. Since then it eventually dawned on me that they had really just become another large group of modern developers pushing out grungy generic shooters.

And Doom and Quake are not Generic?

No. They most certainly are not.

Really? All you do is going from room to room while shooting everything. How is that any different from Doom 3?

I mean sure yea Doom 1 and 2 and the original Quake are ALLOT better then Doom 3 but the basic formula (besides Doom 3's horror aspect) is pretty much the same.
