I have always found it fascinating finding first maps of authors, which may not b a successful series (if I do more) as some ppl don't seem to like coverage on first maps - which I know doesn't represent you now, and may have lost functionality on new Gzdoom, but it was cool to go back - right off the gate you made something beautiful, creative and interesting and this was a blast - good times

It processed JUST in time HD - youtube messing with me - fam reunion G2G

Spoiler

Tower In The Fountain Of Sparks is my favorite megawad of all time, but by contrast, I only like a few of the levels in Get Out Of My Stations. I have to admit, though: when it's good, it's really good.

Underground Initiations is a sprawling affair of three different adventures which all interconnect in interesting ways, with the objective being to bring all three keys back to the central hub. Resources can be tight (it was common to spend half the run at ≤50% HP), and it sucks losing twenty minutes of progress whenever things go sideways, but it was hard to get discouraged when the sheer variety of approaches meant that there was always another build order to try upon restarting. (Another thing that kept me engaged through the whole process of discovery & strategizing was the accompanying midi: a multi-movement epic named "Liquid Luck" that is one of my all time favorite James Paddock joints.)

I settled on a "blue first" route because of how useful it'd be to get a Plasma Gun early, and while it was a very dangerous stunt to try to shove my way into the base, wake the Spiderdemon, and slip out again, I didn't mind losing so many runs there because - since it was very first thing I'd do in the run - I'd get instant restarts to try again whenever I wiped out.

I really enjoy how in sandbox maps like these you start off outmatched and on the back foot, but if you have a good route, you gradually acquire the weapons and powerups you need and gather momentum - it's a great payoff when you finally get to feel like you have the resources to handle anything now. Similarly, I am thankful that the mappers, knowing that they were making a marathon map, chose to have the big dramatic finale be more bark than bite: it's a long journey to get there, and with so much progress at stake, the real final challenge is fighting the nerves and not choking when you're so close to victory.
