Post your Doom video! [but don't quote video]

Rockets aren't that bad against cyberdemons if there's an surplus of them and no energy weapons because they kill them a bit faster than the SSG due to the higher fire rate, reduced damage notwithstanding.

Still processing - probably won't work for like an hour, knowing Youtube >.>

It's also worth noting, that I didn't whore the SSG the entire game for once! I'm almost surprised I don't have a forum title mocking that I use it so much...

Meh, HD wasn't kicking in yet, other than to take longer to load. From SSG whore it's now rocket whore? heh. Still gotta work on bfg tactics, half the time I was thinking 'BFG NOW! BFG NOW, BFG NOW! NOOOO, NOT THE PLASMA!! 1 SHOT LOST! 2 SHOTS LOST!! 3 SHOTS LOST!!! fffffffffff .... x.x"

Just watched gggmork's recent attempt at my map 28 in SL, he uses the bfg very nicely, go study.

Ironically, I just watched that demo a few hours ago, and I think I may have actually learned how to use the BFG with it O.O

Apparently, an angled attack is better then?

BFG traces in boom seem to focus a little easier than in zdoom for some reason (at least for me) but the basic principle to get (usually quite a bit) more damage out of a blast is to get rather close to monsters, the angled bit is more gggmork's keyboarding style of keeping things in view than to get it to work more often (afaik); you'll notice charging the bfg and dodging in when the cyber shoots his second rocket gives you a good chance of getting the extra hit in.

Another thing to be noted; I somehow managed to screw up the audio in the last few recordings, so my mic is way softer, and the in-game sfx is much louder. Unfortunately this, at times, drowns out commentary (Possible good thing? :P). I realize I did it though, and it shall be corrected for next video.

Was that in this round of vids or the next one you'll upload? It wasn't really a problem if it was for this one, although I did punch the volume up a bit since my laptop speakers aren't that great.

Try to imagine the bfg as a super shotgun variant: It shoots a set of rays when the big ball hits that disperse more and more the further away they get. Just as well it's a bad idea to use the ssg over long distances, it's a bad idea to use the bfg over long distances. Also keep in mind that if you shoot the bfg ball into a wall far, far away it'll take ages until the rays actually trigger. And additionally, the rays are fired towards the same direction where you shot the ball, so the best idea is to try to hit a nearby enemy with the ball: If it hits, awesome. If it misses and hits a nearby wall or an other monster, the tracers are still likely to actually hit something.

Also, the max damage of the bfg ball is 800 while the theoretical max damage of all rays (assuming they all hit and all do max damage...which is practically impossible but whatever) is 3480. So missing with the ball isn't that big a deal as long as you hit with the rays.

I think I like the beta BFG -- which is also accessible in Eternity -- more than the final one. It's far better balanced. Whereas the BFG9000 makes the Plasma Rifle obsolete most of the time, the BFG2704 more like wastes ammo, but kills monsters faster than the PR, therefore it's even more of a panic weapon than the Plasma Rifle is. No longer a be-all end-all ultimate weapon, just a method to desperately end the lives of threatening Heresy Lords or Cyberdemons.

Awesome reply and explaination! Thanks! =D

I think the BFG 9000's mechanics are magnificent. There are layers and layers of skill involved in using it perfectly. The only problem is how nonsensical and unintuitive its workings are (the fact that the damaging rays emerge from the player rather than the ball when the ball detonates is probably a glitch). As much as I like the gameplay possibilities created by the BFG 9000, you can't base a map around it without excluding all BFG "virgins" - those players who might be otherwise skilled, but haven't yet learned how the BFG works. If I ever actually made a mod again I'd consider making the BFG's tracers visible somehow, so that it could be clearer what's really going on.

Haha, imagine if the tracers came from the projectile. You could sit half a map away and take out everything with little-to-no danger to yourself.

Exactly. Booooooorinnnnnng.

Heh, imagine though if they came backwards from the projectile.

That and I think unless the tracers came from a full 360 degrees (or at least 180+) around the projectile, it would be harder to take out an entire group that wasn't formed in a triangle formation.

Next video is being uploaded now; a quick two-video run through Bulls on Parade. I pull off some sweet moves and am actually quite impressed with a few BFG shots I do =)

With that in mind; Anyone have suggestions for a good quality recording microphone? my headset blows total rented mule and I've vowed to get a new one sometime this week (hopefully before the next recording.)

But the BFG2704 is just a spam weapon. It's not involving any skill to use it.

I'm not sure about the skill part. The BFG9000 tracers come out instantly, so you only have to be a little time in front of that monster. The BFG2704 projectiles require you to keep staying close for a longer time. Or if you want to kill a bunch of cacodemons with it, you have to wave it around, not stay comfortably with the fired BFG9000 projectile and see the gore.

Part 25? Part 25?

Man, how did that happen. I come back on this thread after a few days, and there are 10 more parts than were here before. I am still only up to part 15. And I thought I was keeping up pretty good with the series.

Well that is pretty good coz now I have plenty of eargoesdown action to watch. Except my internet is capped and they take forever to load now. This is what happens when a friend comes to stay from interstate and decides to use your internet in a brave attempt to fill his new iPhone with multitudes of tunes/movies/applications, 90% of which will never get heard/watched/used for anything ever.

I'd say you can, actually. For excellent examples, see some of Alexander S.'s maps - To Fight, Cyberdreams, Generator of Evil, Belial's Bad Brain, Eleven (in freak4.wad). These maps are playable for someone who doesn't know the ins and outs of the BFG ; I would know, because that someone was me just a year ago !

The good thing with maps based around the BFG is 1) you can scale up the opposition considerably and 2) from full ammo to 0, the player only gets 15 shots ; which means you can fill the map with cell charge packs and megaspheres, and still keep it challenging by placing these appropriately and using monsters intelligently.

Something else is that the BFG is so strong, you can add lots of rockets and shells without unbalancing the map at all. It'll be mostly pointless for experienced doomers, and might help players having trouble. Given enough room and the willingness to spend more time, many situations balanced for the BFG can be handled with the RL and/or infighting.

Basically, my take on this is there's a wide variety of ways to make BFG maps as easy or as hard as you want it to be. Compare and contrast tom19 map11 (the one where you have to 2-shot cybies) and longdays (press the trigger, pick up invul after invul and you're guaranteed to win).

So when you hit the internet cap in Australia, you can still download things, just really slowly?

It of course generally depends on the company you go through and the plan you are on, but that is quite common here. Either that, or if you exceed your download limit, you keep your internet speed, but just pay an excess for each Mb over the limit you go.

For example, we have a 90 Gb limit per month, which costs $90 pcm, and if we go over that, it drops back to (I am pretty sure, all the plans have changed recently) 256kbps, which is where it is at the moment.

Ouch, mega ouch.

Although, 90 gigabits in a month is rather hard to hit up in traffic, unless you're downloading/uploading/moving high volume files.
