Super Jamie Posted February 14, 2010 That's hugely interesting. They'd cut down the sprites and midtextures but were obviously trying to make the maps more true to the PC version rather than the console levels. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Antroid Posted February 15, 2010 Two questions for you guys. 1) Should i go ahead and finish my LP of KDiP alone, considering hipp0cat won't be available for guesting for a long time? I think we did all videos of that together, so it might turn out to be slightly boring with me alone. Then again, i could probably go on some ridiculous rant on doom mapping or some such while playing... 2) Should i actually go and create a thread about <!!~my project~!!>? This is relevant because i posted a trailer earlier which was quickly overshadowed. I guess a separate thread would have more feedback, especially since i've been saving that music for a very long time and want more people to see the video. But the wad is nowhere near completion so far, even though a lot of work is done already, and i would probably just post the trailer, a few screens, and some text about how it is going to be the best wad ever, and i wouldn't even be updating the thread with new screens since i work rather slowly and don't want spoilers. So it would probably die fairly quickly anyway. Um, sorry for the wall of text there, i've just resumed mapping for doom and am kind of excited about it again (it won't last too long i suppose). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Jodwin Posted February 15, 2010 Antroid said:2) Should i actually go and create a thread about <!!~my project~!!>? Nah, wait until you have more to show. You yourself admitted that quite a few parts of the trailer were from parts that didn't do the wad justice, so promoting it more with such material doesn't make much sense. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
eargosedown Posted February 15, 2010 Short summary: I finally got over my cold, enough that I can use my mic and not sound terrible (which is ironic because my mic is usually the cause of me sounding terrible ANYWAYS) and I've been urging for some Alien Vendetta, but I refuse to play off-camera! This is a blind run and it shall stay as such! I go through the map, Mutual Destruction, in two parts. This is probably one of the better runs I've done. I really like the atmosphere and the styling of the map. Just like the rest of AV so far, overall it's done amazingly well. The invuln sphere trap made me work for once, and it made me scream like a little girl when I heard that alert sound, but I prevailed after only a couple tries. This level forced me to use and learn (and love?) the BFG, and I get off one or two shots that are worth the cells actually spent. Part 26: And part 27: Comments and reviews are very much welcome, and are the best reward of making these videos, so please, go crazy! Also, if someone can tell me the name of that music track they get a shoutout on the next video (but you have to name it by the sound! don't go looking it up on the wiki page :P). I also redid my page over there with a more "hellish" theme in honor of the Doom Let's Play, so, comments on that are appreciated too. You can view it here: http://www.youtube.com/user/eargosedown @Antroid; your videos are great to watch while I'm waiting for my videos to upload. Glad to see I'm not the only one recording at the early hours and wishing I didn't have to eventually sleep =P side rant: Why does Youtube ALWAYS take the frame of my video where I'm holding the SSG to use as the thumbnail? I barely use it this video, and they still make me look like a SSG whore! I'm obviously a rocket whore now! I've moved up in the world! edit- it should also be noted, while Youtube processes the videos, the quality is gonna suck. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

You yourself admitted that quite a few parts of the trailer were from parts that didn't do the wad justice, so promoting it more with such material doesn't make much sense. Well, i meant to say that i chose to show the more interesting-looking areas over the battles, so the only thing that wasn't represented adequately was the gameplay (and midi music i suppose). The visuals and style and stuff like that, however, is shown fully, and that's more or less all anybody could show people before they release a wad (of course there are "gameplay trailers" and such but still). So i don't think i will ever have better material to promote the wad... Well, i'll wait anyway, i guess. Maybe i'll have a better idea. By the way - Jodwin - weren't you the guy who said he couldn't be my friend because i hate slaughtermaps? %) If you know what i'm talking about i'm sure you'll remember, otherwise pay this no mind. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Jodwin Posted February 15, 2010 @eargosedown: You're getting better with the BFG all the time, yay! :) Just one thing I noticed though...and I'm not sure if it's just slight inexperience or not since it's not necessarily an easy concept about the BFG to understand, let alone master... The tracers are, always, fired to the direction to which you had originally shot the BFG ball. That means, if you shoot the BFG ball directly to the west, then turn around 180 degrees and face monsters to the east, none of the tracers will hit since they will be shot towards the west. The point of origin for the tracers, however, is always your own location. Here's a crude example, I noticed a situation pretty much like this happening during the blue room revenant fight in your video: Here, you're shooting the BFG in position 1 towards the enemies (revenants). While the BFG ball is in motion, you quickly move to position 2 and turn to watch the revenants while the BFG ball hits and triggers the tracers. However, since you were facing towards the east (or whatever direction it really was), the tracers get shot to the wall and none hit the revs (the pink mess). This makes using the BFG hard since you pretty much need to be standing in front of the enemies all the time until the tracers trigger. And at that point, if not earlier, kicks in mastering BFG timing... But once you've got the timing down, too, you've mastered most of the BFG as far as single player is concerned. :) (deathmatch is a whole other story, though) @Antroid: Don't take everything too seriously. :) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Antroid Posted February 15, 2010 @Jodwin Well, i don't think i do.. do i? Anyway, just recorded four videos' worth of footage of KDiP, i will post here once they're done uploading and processing. I finished KDiP, although some could dispute that. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Antroid Posted February 15, 2010 Here you go, Let's Play KDiP concluded. Feel free to point out just how horrible a doom player i am. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

So, if I am understanding this correctly: If I want to do the "angle-look" at a mob to hit more with traces, the ball needs to leave the gun when I'm on the angle for the tracers to work? I thought the tracers originated from the player when the ball connected, based on the ol' Hit a corner and then look around it from deathmatching, but that trick works because you're still looking the same direction, correct? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
xepop Posted February 15, 2010 The tracers are, always, fired to the direction to which you had originally shot the BFG ball. To eargose: That's all you really need to remember. It doesn't matter where you look after. It might be good to even forget trying to hit monsters with the ball, but instead trying to fire it so after you maneuvre to safer spot all your tracers hit them. Tracers does most of the damage anyway so it doesn't matter if the ball misses. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
eargosedown Posted February 16, 2010 Part 28: "Time for new audio settings and a new (and short) level run. I really loved this level in that way that you love a good firm spanking many years later that set you on the straight path - in other words, it hurt like a bitch but I'm glad I played through it! The music track was straight up bitchin', and the fights were very epic. I do believe I will be buying a new mic before my next recording." 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Remember, Jag Doom and 32X Doom were in development at the same time. Jag Doom had these same levels at this time (I would imagine the 32X team had daily builds of Jag Doom so they could port over changes). So this rom is actually a snapshot of what would become known as the "console levels" in progress (as they were being simplified). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
arrrgh Posted February 17, 2010 Contorted_Extirpation said:my map Not too bad, especially not for a second map, but some of the texturing choices are odd, and it looks a bit easy(but then again you're playing on ITYTD.) You might want to start out making vanilla Doom or Boom maps before you move onto the more advanced ZDoom mapping features - you don't need them to make a great map. Also, try WeGame to record videos next time as it'll record a lot smoother than HyperCam and won't have the "UNREGISTERED HYPERCAM 2" watermark on the video. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Antroid Posted February 17, 2010 Okay so a few things changed around and i think i want to leisurely LP some more doom (alone this time, sorry, no hipp0cat available). Everybody recommend me a wad that fits these specifications: -challenging, but beatable without too much frustration on UV (i dunno why but i have to play on UV); -not a slaughterfest or a port-feature-heavy wad or a TC of some kind; -not a wad that's been LP'd a thousand times before; -long and interesting to watch enough. I was thinking of Plutonia 2 or WoS, because these are the last ones i'm aware of. In WoS i think i got quite far and then stopped playing, and Plutonia 2 pretty much kicked my ass in about four or five maps. Though it'd probably be better to play something completely blind. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
eargosedown Posted February 17, 2010 I've been playing this: http://www.doomworld.com/idgames/index.php?id=15671 It's well worth a let's play video, and not too overly challenging. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

darkreaver Posted February 18, 2010 What about Momento Mori 1 or 2? Good, old and "legendary" megawads. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Super Jamie Posted February 18, 2010 Scythe, Episodes 1 and 2. Scythe 2, Episodes 1 to 3. The Rebirth by Vader, my favorite megawad Bloodrust by SlayeR, a neat 11-map pack of short levels 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
eargosedown Posted February 18, 2010 So, I spoiled myself and bought this. Mostly because a fella I heard on vent is using it, and his voice is so clear... it's just like "Please mister... continue talking... I just want to keep hearing how clear your voice is" =P Sadly, it probably won't be here for a week, so until then, you'll have to deal with the other crummy videos I upload. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Antroid Posted February 18, 2010 Thanks for the suggestions. Though i played the scythes and those wouldn't be blind. And i THINK (not sure though) that i started both memento moris at some point in the past and played about a quarter of each before quitting. :/ I guess i'll choose something else at random. ArmouredBlood said:Heh, It would've been interesting to see what you thought of SL in a vid :( Oh well. I am pretty patient and calm, so it would probably be a mix of my LP of "super mario cube root of three" and the ending to KDiP. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
eargosedown Posted February 18, 2010 You should do Hell Revealed 2 on Nightmare, Antroid =p I have faith! edit - I also assume you, like me, are up way too late at the current moment, instead of going to bed for whatever classes tomorrow? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

eargosedown Posted February 20, 2010 Good news/bad news time; The good; I got my new headset! yay! The bad; I seriously screwed up this last set of recordings by trying to get it working clearly. The audio didn't want to codec properly so I had to go at like half the bitrate and the video is horrible FPS wise, overall it's probably my worst batch yet. The question; Should I post it up still, piss poor audio and framerate? Or just skip ahead to the next video/map and scrap these? (Next level is Alien Ressurection) I figured out a way to have the audio loopback (Since the headset is USB) but I can't get camtasia to record the audio just yet. Any ideas anyone? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Jodwin Posted February 20, 2010 Well, even if the videos suck, it's better to have them than nothing at all. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
printz Posted February 20, 2010 And MAP18 is too much a blast to miss. I think it was one of the most fun of AV levels, with that immense amount of spider masterminds. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
