Limiting the framerate: PRBoomPlus 2.4.8.5

Hey guys
I've just got PRBoomPlus 2.4.8.5 up and running on my new Windows 7 64-bit OS, and I'm finding that the framerate is... A bit quick, to be honest. On my old system (early dual-core Athlon 4000 with average specs) the framerate was quite normal. On my new system (Win7 64-bit Ult, 8GB 1333MHz DDR3 RAM, Core i7 CPU, dual ATI Radeon 5850 in Crossfire) the framerate is significantly boosted. I know I can "slow down" the game speed, but 60% seems too slow / jerky, 70% seems weird and 80%+ is too fast.

Is there a way to change the framerate back to what it would normally be "pre-upgrade"? It's not often I have to complain about a game being "too fast" but this is one of those rare times! :)

Advice is definitely appreciated :)

Ah! Oddly that was set to "Yes" (mustn't have made a difference on my old system, lmao); setting it to "No" as you suggested did the trick. To test it I just stopwatch-timed a 15-minute Plutonia 2 demo I wanted to watch, and it was spot-on the right timing.

(It's also good to know that I can copy the folder itself from one system to another, and even to a much newer version of Windows, with no problems. Nicely designed program to be so self-contained.)

Many thanks for such a quick reply! Now I can watch "TV" (or should that be DV?) again :)

Any reason you're using that older version? (The current is 2.5.0.6) You can use the same CFG file with it.

Most Doom ports (and by "most", I mean "all those that I know of") are self-contained. It's something they inherited from Doom itself, which was a DOS program. But I agree it's nice.

myk: I didn't know there was a newer version :) I simply copied the existing folder over. Will now go and find the newest version.

And on the subject of modifying the game's behaviour, is it possible to start a single-player game in which items respawn AltDeath-style? The major reasons I ask are 1: because I'm a mightily-unskilled player (so I need all the help I can get!) and 2: it would be fun to have reappearing weapon caches when I'm mucking around in single-player.

You could start a -solo-net game in -altdeath mode, although you won't get the usual stat screens and will start in a DM position. You could also apply this DeHackEd patch to get twice the usual ammo. I recommend using lower difficulty levels, where possible, though.

Some other source ports, that use flags to alter game behavior, do allow one to play single player mode with items respawning.

One problem: Lots of WADs (KSutra comes to mind) don't have DM start positions :)

What's a good port that would allow the item respawns? That sounds like it'd be a good solution.

Thanks for the help and suggestions!
