Per-Scan Posted May 26, 2010 Hmm. I am now trapped in level 3 (Canyon of the Dead). I dropped off the ledge into the canyon and now I'm stuck behind a stalagmite. Looks like a restart then. Oh well. The sound is truly terrible. It's slow and muffled and really shouldn't have past the beta stage in this state. And why can't I reassign the buttons? Drives me mad that. I play Zdoom with a 360 controller and now I have to relearn the buttons as my muscle memory is trained to my layout. The first 2 new levels are pretty nice though... 0 Share this post Link to post

Well it looks like Doom 2 isn't region locked like Doom 1 is! Doom 1 is still region locked for some stupid reason though :( Anyways, The sound doesn't really bother me that much. What DOES bother me is the fact that even though allot of people complained about Doom 1 not supporting widescreen modes Doom 2 STILL doesn't feature one! I am using a 42 inch full HD TV, and a large chunk of the screen is left unusable since the game doesn't support widescreen :( On the other hand though, the music is much better then it was in the vanilla game, there also some new sounds and being able to play on Xbox live is nice! Plus there is a new episode! A good buy overall, albeit not a flawless one. EDIT: I am currently on level 5 of the new episode "No rest for the living". I intend to share my thoughts of the new episode once I have beaten it (probably sometime tonight!). 0 Share this post Link to post
Dutch Doomer Posted May 26, 2010 I'm not impressed by those screens to be honest. 0 Share this post Link to post

I think a part of the problem comes from the fact that the new episode was made by modern level designers who don't know how to to take full advantage of the Doom engine. I am only half way through level 5 (there are 9 new maps in the episode) but some of the maps like level 3 are all over the place in terms of themes and texture use. They are still fun for the mast part though, and I don't regret buying Doom 2 on the Xbox live arcade. 0 Share this post Link to post
cybdmn Posted May 26, 2010 dutch devil said:I'm not impressed by those screens to be honest. I think, nobody should forget some things. The maps must fit in the overall design and skill-level of the game. The maps are created for a game console, where you have a game controller, not mouse and keyboard. And the target audience is not the doomworld regular, who can rush blindly through HR style maps, nor even know that stuff like this existing. I have finished the first six maps until now, and i must say, it was a fun ride. The gameplay is well balanced, ammo is a little bit too much, while health and armor stuff is well used. I like the design of the maps really, it is not only, that the architecture is there to look good, the mapper has build much of it in a manner, that you can use it kinda tactical. You can run from one little hideout to another, to get closer to enemy groups, or just hide for reloading, and such. There are a vast ammount of secrets in these maps, and some of them are really well hidden. The most impressive and hard to find secret, i've seen until yet is the was to get the bfg in map six. 0 Share this post Link to post
Udderdude Posted May 27, 2010 The new levels are quite good. Definitely worth it. 0 Share this post Link to post
Sporku Posted May 27, 2010 Why the fuck does the Super Shotgun go between the CHAINSAW and FIST on the weapon cycle order? That doesn't even begin to make sense. 0 Share this post Link to post
Devalaous Posted May 27, 2010 Check my post in the original thread (which you hackers got closed :[) for how to circumvent that problem 0 Share this post Link to post
Hekksy Posted May 27, 2010 Well, the netcode still isn't perfect but it does seem better. Back on Doom I couldn't finish half my games because the servers would freak out and send me jumping all over the level with a joystick waggle. Now games are playable! Still not a lot of people online but I was able to get a few games in. Feel free to add me: HeX9109 0 Share this post Link to post
Shanoa Posted May 27, 2010 I must say the new maps are excellent. Better than i expected. @Agentspork: Yeah it annoyed me too but you can use the D-pad. Up will switch to SSG and shotgun, down will go to rocket, left will switch between plasma and bfg and right will switch between chaingun pistol. 0 Share this post Link to post

I think those weren't ripped but were copied by hand, probably using the PC versions as a base. It's a replica, not a true conversion. 0 Share this post Link to post

Fredrik Posted May 28, 2010 Are those screenshots of the new maps? I don't feel like installing Microsoft Silverfish to find out. 0 Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted May 28, 2010 Fredrik said:Are those screenshots of the new maps? I don't feel like installing Microsoft Silverfish to find out. Heh, these seem to have been recorded on a PC after the PWAD was ripped from the Xbox: the music doesn't seem to be any slower. 0 Share this post Link to post
Solarn Posted May 28, 2010 I really like the design of these new maps. Looks like a mix of 1994 and modern sensibilities, both in looks and gameplay. 0 Share this post Link to post

It isn't possible to record the TV screen while playing your Xbox, plus the open-GL graphics make it really obvious that this is being played on Gzdoom or prboom+. 0 Share this post Link to post

kristus Posted May 28, 2010 All you need is a TV card. Though I am not sure even that is necessary anymore with modern hardware. 0 Share this post Link to post

What I meant is that their is no simple and a easy way to do it for the typical gamer who may be use to not having to do anything more besides downloading FRAPS when he wants to record games on his PC monitor. 0 Share this post Link to post

There are hundreds of Xbox 360/PS3 Modern Warfare 2 videos. Not comparing the two just saying plenty of console gamers take such interest in their hobby. 0 Share this post Link to post

I don't know about any capture devices for 1080p, but this device captures in 720P. It's what most people on Youtube use for their Halo and Call of Duty videos. Anyway, has anyone struggled with the controls in this version? I had that problem with the original Doom on here as well. 0 Share this post Link to post

Mostly just those damn weapon switching controls. Even if I'm using the quick weapon switch buttons mapped to the d-pad, I'll end up switching to the wrong weapon accidentally, because the xbox 360 controller's d-pad always seems to do the opposite of what I want it to do. 0 Share this post Link to post
kristus Posted May 30, 2010 Can't you just record the screen with a DVD/Digital box recorder? Those are pretty common these days. 0 Share this post Link to post
caco_killer Posted May 30, 2010 You can do that, but these HD game consoles do not look very good in SD. I use a Pinnacle Dazzle for recording games. This is what XBLA Doom 2 looks like when recorded with my Pinnacle Dazzle. 0 Share this post Link to post
