dew Posted July 27, 2010 thought this might me interesting even to doomworld. :) me and my fellow zdaemon euro tourney admins launched a doom2 map01 tournament and after a painfully troublesome signup/rule deciding stage it blossomed in quite an event. currently in it's earliest stage, it's a double elimination monster with bo3 matches in the later rounds. by checking the brackets you can see we managed to bait some heavy impact names, including everyone's favourite oldschool legends sedlo and ocelot. i'm sure demos of the more prestigious matches will start flowing in soon as quality players start clashing. this is one of the largest, most important doom deathmatch events in a few years, so stay tuned! EDIT: to download the archive of all games collected during the tourney, follow here. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

dew Posted August 10, 2010 the tourney is roughly half way through and first bo3 matches have been played recently. just check the brackets i linked previously (and refresh if you cached the page last time). we already had some tasty drama when graim got stonewalled trying to arrange his match before leaving for a long vacation and when mortalogy kickstarted a discussion about valid and dirty strategies by going for a bit of garden camp to break the pace of his game with sedlo... facets of these can be seen in forums if you're interested in controversy and me acting as an oppressive overlord. :p anyways, i promised demos and i managed to collect quite a bunch. here's a pick of the more interesting or important ones. the recorder's name serves as a download link. the view can of course be switched ingame by pressing f12 (by default). i recommend watching in zdaemon 1.08.08, because it addressed some issues of spectating. WB round 0: ----------- Nero - ocelot Spoiler ocelot joined the tourney late and had to play a tourney admin for qualifying to his spot. :) ocelot's reckless, uncharacteristic rush means either he's rusty, or he's trying to confuse his rivals further down the brackets. or both? some of nero's ultra fast ssg grabs cause hilarious weapon desyncs. result: Nero 38 - 50 ocelot WB round 1: ----------- Atomi - [WH]Wilou84 Spoiler i haven't seen this match, but atomi is a high tier player and wilou is a doomworld resident, so you might be interested. result: Atomi 50 - 36 [WH]Wilou84 IleKallio - capodecima Spoiler a young gun from finland against a seasoned czech player, both above average and evenly matched. a frag for frag game for a long time, gets decided in a massive spawnrape when capo loses spawn discipline. result: IleKallio 50 - 45 capodecima Devisin - ocelot Spoiler another rushy performance by oce. devi is a very solid duelist, but such a high score? hmmm... result: Devisin 43 - 50 ocelot dew - mk-2001 (updated 24/Aug/10) Spoiler i go easy on the guy, i know he's mostly a ffa player. he gets a credit for signing up to play with the big boys. result: dew 50 - 28 mk-2001 Gyrossman - AconyX (updated 24/Aug/10) Spoiler gyrossman a.k.a. doomerman smacks down a still-new finnish guy with unstable connection. a cruel show. result: Gyrossman 50 - 12 AconyX Lukas111_cz - phenex2 (updated 24/Aug/10) Spoiler A proof to the saying that developers suck at the games they code. :) result: Lukas111_cz 50 - 09 phenex2 turSKA - Blaze (updated 05/Sep/10) Spoiler blaze is quite good, especially as an american playing euro servers, but turska - one of the biggest contenders for the overall victory - specifically tried to keep him as low in the score as possible. harsh spanking. result: turSKA 50 - 13 Blaze LB round 1: ----------- N3on - desolator Spoiler a decent game of two intermediate players. result: N3on 50 - 32 desolator capodecima - Onfire (updated 24/Aug/10) Spoiler the czech oldschooler jarin (capodecima these days) picks up from the early loss in wb1 and smashes a romanian intermediate player onfire. result: capodecima 50 - 16 Onfire Devisin - Marax (updated 24/Aug/10) Spoiler the danish girl wonder vs the only polish competitor. devi is a higher tier 1on1 player and it shows. result: Devisin 50 - 26 Marax mikehail - Spirit_Crusader (updated 24/Aug/10) Spoiler brave sir mikehail faces the anime-headed japanophile dragon with a terrible 200+ ping. of course he loses badly. there's a point where he spawns at plasma about 10 times in a row.. ugly business. result: mikehail 26 - 50 Spirit_Crusader [WH]-Wilou84 - Fluffles (updated 24/Aug/10) Spoiler our wil drops from the tourney. from what i hear the demo is not very viewable, because fluff timeouts for a considerable time. result: [WH]-Wilou84 38 - 50 Fluffles WB round 2: ----------- Titan - Evolution Spoiler ownage by one of the main favorites of the tourney. result: Titan 50 - 21 Evolution Atomi - wabe Spoiler two highly skilled finns representing two doom generations, experience won over crazy aim and aggressivity. result: Atomi 50 - 40 wabe Mortalogy 50 - 47 Sedlo Spoiler oh, the controversial one. it's a spectator recorded demo (=sucks), because sedlo didn't record and mortal isn't known for sharing much. a long match nearing 30 minutes and an ugly, campy one as well. it's a big mind game that went mortal's way in the end, because sedlo caved in and rushed things in the worst moment possible. there's also that controversial moment where mortal camps the garden with all weapons and the fact that a croatian agreed to play a belgian on an english server, against all common sense. but hey, sedlo called it fair, so it's his loss. :p not really recommended for enjoyable watching though. result: Mortalogy 50 - 47 Sedlo Gyrossman - runkman Spoiler this match is tits. it's slow paced, but these two guys are both class. runk has more tourney experience with map01, so perhaps that was the deciding factor, but maybe it was gyrossman's (formerly doomerman/dobberman of speedrunning fame) ill-timed bfg bug triggered by shooting a tic or two too fast after switching and server not recognizing it while the client shoots balls of nothing happily. :) a good show if you're into long games. result: Gyrossman 48 - 50 runkman dew - Lukas111_cz Spoiler a unique chance to see me actually winning. :) result: dew 50 - 28 Lukas111_cz IleKallio - turSKA (updated w/ other POV 05/Sep/2010) Spoiler another contender for the overall victory forcing his way over his fellow countryman. result: IleKallio 33 - 50 turSKA LB round 2: ----------- wabe - Doomkiller Spoiler if there were 10 skill tiers for this map, wabe would probably be 2-3 and dk 3-4. the difference is apparent and wabe slowly and steadily builds his lead. result: wabe 50 - 39 Doomkiller IleKallio - Spirit_Crusader Spoiler fin-cze again. a long yet thrilling game. ile clearly possesses more map knowledge, but spirit makes up for it with ridiculous chaingun accurancy. there's an epic standoff near the very end that decides the whole match. result: IleKallio 48 - 50 Spirit_Crusader Sedlo - AconyX Spoiler sedlo smash. result: Sedlo 50 - 12 AconyX capodecima - Twister (updated 24/Aug/10) Spoiler quite a surprise. or maybe not. unlike other oldschool legends, twister hasn't trained anything for the tourney and just rushed like in a friendly game. capo's performance was much more concentrated to let such carelessness unpunished. result: capodecima 50 - 30 Twister Devisin - Lukas111_cz (updated 24/Aug/10) Spoiler hardly a surprising outcome. stronger player devi cruises past the ever-disappointed lukas. :) result: Devisin 50 - 30 Lukas111_cz Gyrossman - Fluffles (updated 24/Aug/10) Spoiler gyross destroys yet another player with a terrible connection and ping disadvantage. what a bully he is. result: Gyrossman 50 - 1o Fluffles LB round 3 (BO3): ----------------- Sedlo - Nero Spoiler sedlo is clearly uncomfortable on the english server and nero capitalizes. then they switch to a german server and it's a different sedlo playing. the third map was, according to agreement, picked by the guy with higher frag total. very fast games. result: Sedlo 47 50 50 - 50 25 20 Nero capodecima - Evolution (updated 24/Aug/10) Spoiler czech craftsmanship against patient english camping. solid games of an entryway specialist and a relatively strong ssg player of other maps. result: capodecima 50 50 - 41 38 Evolution Devisin - Gyrossman (updated 24/Aug/10) Spoiler devi had some connection troubles (even with disconnects) in the first game and the quality suffered. the second game is played in a fast, rushy style and looks fun despite the lowered care factor of both players. :) result: Devisin 27 43 - 50 50 Gyrossman wabe - Spirit_Crusader (updated 05/Sep/10) Spoiler wabe plays a serious, patient game while spirit has trouble keeping it competitive and rushes far too much. i heard he had a technical problem with a stuck key... but don't we all have those when losing? :p result: wabe 50 50 - 23 16 Spirit_Crusader ok that's all i've got and think is worth sharing at the moment. some players sit on their demos for tactical reasons and will only share after they get eliminated (or win), some forgot to record. i'll update when the tourney progresses. enjoy if you care. :) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Ralphis Posted August 10, 2010 Since Dew was eliminated, I'm cheering for Gyrossman and Vain now. These are three of my favorite doomers and, coincidentally, they're all czech! Go CZ! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
lupinx-Kassman Posted August 10, 2010 Ah darn, I was routing for Wilou and Dew since they were the only two I recognized. Nice matches all around though. I like seeing things like these. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Ismaele Posted August 10, 2010 I am glad to know that IleKallio was eliminated... :) ...I couldn't stand him and his arrogance, when I played ZDaemon on-line! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
myk Posted August 12, 2010 The game between Sedlo and Mortalogy wasn't bad, but too bad Sedlo didn't keep his focus and win for great justice, because of the style he displayed until the end. He could do it, if there's another opportunity. dew said: some players sit on their demos for tactical reasons and will only share after they get eliminated (or win), some forgot to record. Cowards... it's not like sports block TV broadcasting under such a pretext. May these peoples' lack of initiative to be versatile and adaptive be their demise ;) As for demos, though, I think the best way to post them is without giving the score away. Comments and scores can be treated as spoilers (with the hide-spoiler tag) so people that aren't aware of the details yet can root for their favorites and enjoy more while they watch. This time I squinted at the screen to download stuff, to avoid seeing the scores :p 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
dew Posted August 24, 2010 okay, i've edited the scores out of the archive names and enveloped comments/scores in spoiler tags. please report if you encounter a broken link. i've also uploaded everything i got to this point, including the not-so-awesome matches and opposing demos of the same games. just take your pick. the post was getting huge so i've split it off and i'll continue here with the later stages... WB quarterfinals (BO3): ----------------------- Atomi - Titan Spoiler things get serious. atomi takes the first round slow and titan, favorite of the match, struggles to hold a proper lead. then server gets changed to atomi's choice, but he also increases the pace and that is exactly what titan likes. result: Atomi 43 34 - 50 50 Titan dew - turSKA (updated w/ other POV 05/Sep/2010) Spoiler a gigantic failure by yours truly. turska is undoubtedly my better, but i kept struggling with my computer as much as with him and got raped after a subpar performance. :P result: dew 25 20 - 50 50 turSKA runkman - Mortalogy (updated 05/Sep/2010) Spoiler a slow, patient game where runk has to work for every frag, but he doesn't rush things like sedlo did and his better map skill shows in the long run. the demos are messy, because runk overwrote his 1st map demo by accident, mortal doesn't share them and i only got a spectator recording starting at ~ 16-16. the 2nd round is okay. result: runkman 50 50 - 30 35 Mortalogy vain - ocelot (updated 05/Sep/2010) (updated w/ other POV 29/Sep/2010) Spoiler i received this through the grapevine, because vain refused to give me his demos for preposterous reasons and oce probably won't share until he's finished. it might be a bit unethical to leak it, but hey, i organize the tourney and it's no mortal kombat challenge deciding the fate of the earth. :p it's a really good game, no need for any spoils. ocelot rules. result: vain 32 26 - 50 50 ocelot LB round 4 (BO3): ----------------- Sedlo - dew Spoiler aaand i'm out. at least it was after a solid performance, not a blow out like my previous match. relatively fast games and sedlo continues to cruise through the losers' bracket. result: Sedlo 50 50 - 38 39 dew Atomi - capodecima (updated 24/Aug/10) Spoiler this was a great match! both players gave a strong, focused performance. capo surprised pleasantly with his ability to not only run with atomi, but give him a full challenge and force him to employ his awesome bfg trickery. only short drops of concentration in the late game and some bad spawn luck decided both the rounds. result: Atomi 50 50 - 40 45 capodecima Gyrossman - Mortalogy (updated 05/Sep/2010) Spoiler ughhhh. seriously. mortal kept delaying his part of the brackets for weeks with absolute bullshit reasons, he even forgot about a scheduled match and stood gyross up... then when he finally decided to play, he threw the match. absolute disgrace, fuck that guy. result: Gyrossman 50 50 - 13 35 Mortalogy wabe - vain (updated 05/Sep/2010) Spoiler surprising development here. a 3 games match that went wabe's way against expectations. he played focused and patiently while vain seemed a bit bored and slacking compared to his match against ocelot. it was a deserved fall in the end, but not many expected this outcome. result: wabe 50 39 50 - 30 50 39 vain i'll post more when i get it. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
dew Posted September 4, 2010 the tournament progressed a bit and there's currently 4 matches left with 3 finns and 2 czechs still remaining. i updated the previous posts with demos i obtained in the meantime - later rounds of the loser's bracket and turska's games, because he decided to release his demos. now for the current rounds: LB round 5 (BO3): ----------------------- Gyrossman - Atomi (updated w/ other POV 07/Sep/2010) Spoiler a really good match, gyross is soaring through the map and atomi is playing his usual tough defence. one can spot some bad moves or unusually slow reactions in atomi's game, but that doesn't take anything away from gyross' massive improvement on entryway. result: Gyrossman 50 50 - 39 37 Atomi Sedlo - wabe didn't happen. :( sedlo decided to quit the tournament, because he felt uncomfortable with the slow pace and attitude of some players when it came to scheduling matches. he's just too cool for school. i couldn't convince him to stay, so we had a few fun goodbye matches, he mentioned some big irl plans Spoiler (mrs. sedlo, maybe sedlo jr.) and poof. he was gone again. lucky wabe. :p WB semifinals (BO3): ----------------------- Titan - runkman Spoiler another sad case of a player losing interest in finishing the tourney. :( i heard runk had some irl trouble and coupled with the same disgust sedlo voiced, he just lost the competitive soul. it's a shame, this could've been an epic match. result: Titan 50 50 - 15 25 runkman turSKA - ocelot Spoiler no spoiler, sorry. go watch it, it's a must see. a funny sidestory: turska visited us in prague before the match (he's a finn), we had some fun (and doom-related discussions), he got himself a doom-themed tattoo (maybe he'll post a picture), then he said he felt prepared for the match. :) result: turSKA 50 50 - 40 47 ocelot more to come, we're reaching finals. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
dew Posted September 7, 2010 more games got played! LB semifinals (BO3): ----------------------- wabe - runkman Spoiler wabe seizes the opportunity to go surprisingly far in the tourney, runk plays too careless and constantly runs into wabe's ambushes. could've been a better match. result: wabe 50 50 - 35 27 runkman Gyrossman - ocelot (updated w/ other POV 29/Sep/2010) Spoiler a great match to watch. gyross doesn't have all the chess intricacies of map01 memorized by years of experience, so he tries to compensate with hijango-style map presence and awesome movement. on the other hand, ocelot plays like an iceberg and punishes every little mistake by a spree of spawn frags. the main difference in stand off situations comes with ocelot's better bfg handling, but you be the judge. result: Gyrossman 32 38 - 50 50 ocelot LF final 1 (BO3): ----------------------- wabe - ocelot (updated w/ other POV 29/Sep/2010) Spoiler played immediatelly after gyross-ocelot, here's where wabe finally hits the wall. he struggles to regain map possession and has to stall a lot. oce builds a comfortable lead in both rounds, then lets wabe close the gap a bit with less responsible, stubborn game than he's known to play. i can imagine wabe's despair when being denied any space to play. :) result: wabe 32 32 - 50 50 ocelot WB final (BO3): ----------------------- Titan - turSKA Spoiler possibly the best match in terms of two map01 doomgods playing it level. both guys have shown an awesome performance and the match could've gone either way... just watch the end of first map and you'll know what i mean. titan's famous self-sabotaging in full colours. a must see. result: Titan 49 42 - 50 50 turSKA we're reaching the end of the show. i'll post the LB final 2 when i get the demos, the superfinal is yet to be scheduled. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Ralphis Posted September 8, 2010 I'm sad that gyross got bumped, but he played valiantly. I'm gonna take the crazy pick and say that ocelot comes prepared for revenge against turSKA in the super finals rematch 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
myk Posted September 10, 2010 Great games, with highlights on the second ocelot/turSKA game, where ocelot played rather keenly, and the first Titan/turSKA game, which was incredibly tense and close. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
turSKA Posted September 11, 2010 Here's the tattoo dew mentioned I got while I was in Prague. http://img413.imageshack.us/img413/2097/legw.jpg I'm so cool...eh...uh...oh well x) On topic: the grand final will be played tomorrow. Yay 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
kristus Posted September 11, 2010 As part of playing a tournament, it's generally a prerequisite to record demos of your games in the tournament. Often the tournament admins will release demos of larger tournaments. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
dew Posted September 29, 2010 the tourney got finished 2 weeks ago, but i was lazy with collecting the demos and sorting it all out. :) i updated my previous posts with ocelot's demos, at least those matches he could find. LB finals (BO3): ----------------------- ocelot - Titan Spoiler ocelot's best match in the tourney. he played ruthlessly and patiently, gave titan very little space and slowly built his lead by punishing every mistake his opponent made - which was mostly his struggle with the plasma room spawns. titan said he was nervous from the very beginning, but it's quite clear he started losing his nerves as the game progressed, his tourney trademark. i should emphasize this was an EPIC, very long and patient match, perhaps the best in the tournament in terms of the famous high stakes 'entryway chess'. titan's low 3x scores are a world away from let's say gyross' or wabe's 3x! result: ocelot 50 50 - 32 31 Titan mmm... i think i'll post the finals separately. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
dew Posted September 29, 2010 Superfinals (BO5): ----------------------- ocelot - turSKA turska went into the match with 1-0 lead as his winner bracket advantage. we chose this to avoid the possible 2xBO5 scenario with up to 10 rounds. Spoiler apparently the guys chose to play the superfinal match at a much higher pace than their respective games with titan so it doesn't look as serious. there's no long standoffs and mindgames, the tension comes from the closeness of the games, not from nervewrecking expectations. it's an awesome match, especially for spectators, but one has to wonder how the game would look like if one of these guys wasn't finnish. :) result: ocelot 49 48 - 50 50 turSKA ok myk, you have to cover your eyes now. :P congratulations to turSKA. that was an impressive run he had there, not dropping a single round despite two 50-49s. and let's not forget two victories over ocelot. if there was a title of the best current map01 player of europe, it'd be turska who just claimed it. and considering his victories in 3 other tourneys of the 'classic 5' maps, he's pretty much the top dog of the euro duelling scene these days. also congratulations to ocelot for claiming the silver. he returned on a short notice, but he managed to get his game up again and only his apprentice managed to beat him. :) titan in the bronze spot was a bit sour after his last match, but he proved he makes even the finnish overlords tremble in their ski boots. may he learn the southern plasma grab one day... the finalized brackets here. there were plenty of good games played, some with surprising outcomes (wabe, gyross going so far). a shame some big names lost interest when mortalogy crippled the tourney pace by weeks of stalling. still, it was quite an event, certainly the biggest 1on1 clash of skill in two years, and i'd like to thank everyone who participated. enjoy the demos. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
myk Posted October 1, 2010 dew said: the tension comes from the closeness of the games, That was nice, especially as it lasted both games. ok myk, you have to cover your eyes now. :P Heh. titan in the bronze spot was a bit sour after his last match, Yeah, I don't know what drugs ocelot took for that match but they made him play with Alien-series android precision and timing. still, it was quite an event, certainly the biggest 1on1 clash of skill in two years, and i'd like to thank everyone who participated. Indeed, great stuff! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Fluffles Posted April 5, 2012 Sorry to bump this from 2 months back but this is literally the greatest eu duel tournament i've ever experienced, even though I was dropped really fast the shit which went down and how great it was. Just so insane. Anyone interested should definitely take a look at the zdaemon forum topic and demos. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
