DTWID: Project is done, check the release thread

Recommended Posts

What I'm talking about is id never made a homage OUTSIDE the map.

Just like The Green Herring's maps, you'll always see TGH! outside.

I just had an idea. It'll prolly just get shot down with arrows, but.. I was playing Captain Toenail's E4M1 and I got the idea that we could separate certain maps into a separate category for a separate release: all maps that are remakes (which this project is not about) get compiled into a separate release, because a lot of the maps that are remakes--even if their remakeness-ness is remote, such as is the case with Captain Toenail's excellent e4m1 submission, are really great homages to Doom. What you all think? *puts up his Captain America shield*

I don't think this is necessary -- there aren't many remakes as such floating around. The only one offhand that's chock full of homages but works as a really solid submission is Daimon's "Petersen Station", which works great as a secret level because of such.

Also, how is Captain Toenail's E4M1 a remake? If it can be classed as one, then so can every other DTWID submission.

Xaser, are you going to keep the submissions page up, even after the project has been finalized and released?

Sure. May as well keep it around as an archive. I'll zip up the entire set of submissions as well, once it's all said and done.

C30N9, I'm going to put it back in the map, like I said, I just put it off to the side for now until I make a room for it.

It's not a remake, but it is a bit homagey. Many areas remind me of other specific areas of other maps. The double teleport to ledge is an obvious homage to e4m1, the bridge at the begin with lava pits on either side is an obvious homage to e4m3, the orthogonal area is quite remeniscent of e4m7, the chaingun on oval water is a bit of an echo of e4m4.

Much better! :P

Off topic: This thread gets a lot of replies fast!

I'm rather exited to play the alpha now (mostly for the music), is there a date on when the alpha will be released?

Midnight.

Also, I'm fairly certain that Skype group-chat has some sort of IM-to-channel feature. It'd be silly if it didn't.

Does nobody just use IRC anymore?

Only l33t hax0rz. :D

Btw, I once brought down a university SunOS box playing around with IRC bots. That was before I knew much about Unix. I think I either gobbled up the process table or all the memory. Got a temporary account lock and nasty reprimand from sysadmin... Ah well, his fault for not configuring the system right. ;)

Well like I said, E1M4 gave me the idea to do it, but I don't think that can be considered a homage, can it? Besides, it operates nothing like the swastika trap in E1M4 did, it's merely for aesthetic purposes.

I remember reading that these maps are supposed to be ones that were going to be part of Doom but were lost, and I don't think Romero would put two swastikas in his maps.

IIRC, I think Xaser said that he's from Texas. Too lazy to check how his timezone relates to mine, but I'm assuming it's a 1 hour difference for me, meaning I'm gonna have to stay up till 1:00 AM just to download this.

Disclaimer: This maplist is by and large the personal opinion of a single Xaser. It's still subject to change, and the maps therein should still be treated as 'betas' as well. So feel free to nitpick it as needed. ;)

Again, a huge thanks to everyone else who's worked on -- and is still working on -- the project. It's still ongoing, after all. COnsider this one a milestone of some sort. Enjoy, for now. :)

[EDIT] Damn! Forgot to include DTWIDmus.wad for some reason. Credits fly to Mr. Freeze for the soundtrack. My apologies for the whoops. :P

Thanks for choosing my E3M8 out of the pool of them! :)

The list seems fine, but I think Lutz's level would be better in a slot other then E3M6, because it's close to being homage-ish on its own, but being in that slot brings it closer to being so.

Man this is awesome! It's also 1:00 AM! Time really flies. I stopped at E2M5 because I need to get some sleep. I'm really glad you did this build Xaser, I don't think any one of us could've done it better.

Glad to hear you've been enjoying it thus far.

Also, I hate to do it so quickly, but I had to re-upload the wad again. Turns out that a lot of the maps were missing co-op starts. A few of us found that out real quick when we tried and couldn't start any of the episodes because all M1's were co-op unfriendly. :P

Played through the first three maps of Episode 1 with a bit of a poke into the secret level as well.

I have to say, they are extremely well done and definitely induce nostalgia quite heavily. The secrets are great (some of them are actually pretty tricky to find, especially in E1M1).

I won't give away anything, but I really appreciated how the secret exit was done. Not tagging it as a "secret" in the level was either a mild oversight or a really sneaky ploy.

There are a few misaligned textures (I think mostly in E1M2), but they're vertically misaligned and not horizontally. This stuff was only found in stairways that (I don't believe) DB2 can't automatically align. I only mention even this because it's the only flaw I've found thus far.
