Doom Shareware took at least 3 disks (can be fit in one today, but back then it would have been overkill) and it spread like plague.

The same guy worked on both. Duke3D came out AFTER Doom. I have Doom shareware on 2 floppies.

Since you know so much about audio, why don't you go to your keyboard, download the SVN source, and fix it yourself?
