Graf Zahl Posted September 10, 2010 I need the Catalyst version. That's 10.8 for the latest, I think. The troublesome versions were earlier 10.x's, like 10.2 and 10.3. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted September 10, 2010 10.2, 10.5 and 10.6 were all reported as not working at all (including with other OpenGL applications, such as Quake Live). 10.3 worked for some, but not for others. 10.1, 10.4, 10.7 have all been reported to work without problem. I don't know about 10.8, but it has apparently enough issues to necessitate a hotfix. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Glass Rook Posted September 10, 2010 For what it's worth, I'm running GZDoom v1.5.2 (r936) on Windows 7 with ATI Catalyst v10.8 without the hotfix and have had no problems. Without Googling I believe Spleen is right; you may have the wrong driver entirely or something else is amiss. I'll DL the hotfix and let you know how it goes... EDIT: Seems to work well enough with the hotfix too. (BTW thanks Gez.) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Gez Posted September 11, 2010 "hp"? Do you have one of these laptops or netbooks with a custom driver modified by the computer manufacturer instead of using directly the drivers as made by the chipset manufacturer? These are a pain. I had to go here and follow their instructions to force my laptop to accept a driver update, because MSI was quite happy presenting as "new" drivers some outdated and half-broken stuff. But that's an Nvidia site, so for ATI you'd have to see if the equivalent exists. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Glass Rook Posted September 15, 2010 I think so, but then I'm by far no expert. Since it's been working for me I'd say it's a very good chance though! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

John Smith Posted September 15, 2010 I personally find it amazing how many people I know who have ATI cards and have no problems playing the numerous games they play. Either they're only playing DirectX based games (hardly possible, since they play idTech 4 titles, and god knows whatever else), or the OpenGL problems with ATI are more limited to specific pieces of software using specific OpenGL technologies. So it's a lol on the software and a lol on the ati both. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Graf Zahl Posted September 15, 2010 No, it's lol on ATI alone. They managed to release 4(!) driver versions this year alone that had broken OpenGL support. That's 50%! The one in question here was the first of those 4. They also managed to sneak some nice 'feature' in at some time that revoked write permissions of a writable code segment in GZDoom. I have no idea how they managed to do that. By all means it should be impossible yet it was reproducably traceable to the GL driver. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
John Smith Posted September 15, 2010 I'm really not getting into this, it's pretty well established fact that any problems getting GZDoom working with x something are always x somethings fault, and that is of course the end of the matter. I'm just going to comment that I am utterly and completely shocked how ATI can be just so horrible with drivers or implementation or whatever and yet stay so very competitive in the gaming space, even on platforms like the Mac where DirectX isnt even available. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Graf Zahl Posted September 15, 2010 Just google for 'catalyst 10.2 opengl problems' and you'll find enough horror stories to read. Bottom line: When they implemented OpenGL 4.0 they did something horribly wrong that caused massive problems with several older applications - and for some strange reason the same thing happened 3 months later with 10.5 again. Each time they needed 2 subsequent revisions to fix their driver so 10.4 and 10.7 are fine. That's all been confirmed by people not associated with any Doom source port but well, if John Smith says it isn't so than it isn't so, right? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Few years ago I implemented shader based lighting for glboom-plus which was absolutely similar to software mode and it did not work at all on fschulze's Mac (even simplest shaders could not be compiled) with his ATI, but that ATI worked fine with my implementation on Windows 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
John Smith Posted September 15, 2010 Seriously, both of you: All I was saying above was if ATIs support for a major graphics library such as OpenGL was as bad as it's made out to be in GZDoom threads, a rational person would be led to think that there should have been some industry backlash by now. Which doesn't seem to exist. That's all I was saying then, and thats all I'm saying now. Nothing more, nothing less. Also, since we're here discussing GZDoom and hardware, how much benefit will I get out of using my Audigy 2 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Which doesn't seem to exist. That's all I was saying then, and thats all I'm saying now. Nothing more, nothing less. They screwed up a few driver versions. Shit happens. NVidia also had to pull one driver this year due to a bug that could destroy some cards. These companies aren't perfect and normally such problems get resolved quickly. Of course the users need to update their drivers for that. In general ATI works but their drivers are a lot slower than NVidia's when using 'classic' OpenGL features. Also, since we're here discussing GZDoom and hardware, how much benefit will I get out of using my Audigy 2 None. ZDoom uses FModEx's software engine which offers a lot more features than most hardware accelerated sound cards. On modern multi-core CPUs it won't even have any performance impact because it's a perfect scenario for multiprocessor use. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

ReFracture Posted September 16, 2010 John Smith said:You must mean that driver version that had faulty fan control. Yep. I missed that driver, fortunately. As far as I've always seen, historically, ATi and OpenGL has ALWAYS been hit or miss, especially with older OpenGL games.. I've had far too many problems with ATi's drivers to really blame GZDoom, especially when it works fine on nVidia hardware. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Glass Rook Posted September 16, 2010 I think the important thing to always try to keep in mind is that we all love the same family of games. Regardless of the rigs or programs we use to run them, we all love Doom, Heretic, Hexen and all their children. I know this will happen just about the same time as all the peoples of the globe join hands and sing: "We Are The World", but... ...what I've always wanted to see is the developers of the most successful sourceports all get together and create one major kick-ass sourceport! Just picture it... 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Graf Zahl Posted September 16, 2010 That will never happen because people's goals are too different. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

chungy Posted September 16, 2010 There's no shame, this is how the world works. Not everybody agrees on how a Doom source port should be made, which is why there's so many of them. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Perhaps I've been misunderstood. I never said everyone should discard all the sourceports already in existence and switch to one universal, universally accepted sourceport. As I suggested earlier, I know it would be a fantasy to believe that everyone in the world could ever agree upon everything all the time. Furthermore, each of the existing sourceports has its own redeeming qualities as well as its faults (which I don't want to see argued here), thus each of them deserves to be maintained, which they are. All I was saying is that it would be really cool if, as a sort of side-project to their individual works, the sourceport developers would have a try at putting all the best features of their sourceports together into one groovy sourceport. But as has been said, it would never happen since nobody will ever agree upon what the "best" features are... 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
