What are you playing now?

GZDoom 4.10.0 with FreeDOOM: Phase 1 as .IWAD using the Raging Bull weapon set.

It's actually gotten me thinking about how, in gameplay mods that change the text screens, it still uses FreeDOOM's default text screens instead of custom texts for the mod.

I feel like I should make a thread about that, but I just can't find the right words.

Got around to finally finishing Plutonia Experiment.

It was better than Evilution, though map29 brought back the mapping teams' trademark confusing map progression. The Icon of Sin map was surprisingly good, though!

I played through both of TNT:s megawads with freelook and can't imagine how horrible they would feel without. The team's overall map design's way more vertical than is reasonable for vanilla Doom.

With that, I've now officially played all of the "official" Doom95 / Doom2 wads, maybe going to start going through past Cacowards to find something fun to play next.

Currently playing Sunlust, which I've got recommended by more experienced users (I know it's one of the most popular ones, but I'm just starting:D)

Looks like extremely buffed vanilla doom 2 for me.

Everything is technically the same, but so much more... Deliberate? It's hard to find an appropriate word.

Also played some single map wads with Hearts of Demons: Baron mod.

It just feels relaxing and satisfying, combining this one with Bolognese gore and beating some map on ultra violence.

Of course, HoD protagonist is hilariously overpowered and raising difficulty doesn't make the game with him any more challenging, but higher difficulty = more monsters = my brain makes more happy juice

Japan Community Project - I always enjoy these little forays into international fandoms for familiar titles. I wonder whether the PC-98 release or the IBM PC release sold better in the area?

As a bit of trivia, Doom gained the subtitle of "3D Alien Busters" for the Japanese market. Admittedly not quite as striking as "Violence Killer: Turok New Generation", Turok 2's localized name.

Cydonia. I'm on MAP14 and I'm amazed how closely it replicates the Plutonia design ethos - not only with visuals, but, most importantly, aspects like encounter design, difficulty and overall map length.

Cydonia is one of those wads I’ve played more than once on UV with joy. We had it in DWMC last year, and I’m already thinking of replaying it once more. It’s a quality wad which doesn’t come close to overstaying its welcome on mapset and individual map basis.

(plus difficulty-wise it’s up there where I’m challenged but not frustrated, so a comfort zone of sorts :P)

I just finished with Malevolence E1 and holy shit, it's one of the best WADs I've played all year.

There's few things to complain about. I like the new enemies (except for the new Spider Mastermind, he can just drop a nuke and obliterate you out of nowhere), the weapon changes, the midi selection, the level design, themes and even the simple plot. I can't wait for E2.

Recently got back into Doom (been playing on and off since it released in the 90s) and blasted through Doom 1 and 2, then Sigil, Romero's other modern maps, and No Rest for the Living; all on UV, all with the Woof! source port.

Now starting to delve into mods and wads using the Cacowards as a rough guide; although the last thing I played was "The Thing You Can't Defeat" (GZDoom with Vanilla Essence).

Playing Doom 2 for the first time, through GZDoom. I'm at Barrels of Fun at the moment.

Fun game, just as good as Doom 1. I like how nicely placed most secret areas are.

Just now getting around to Lullaby. I am absolutely floored by the design quality and the feel of everything in this wad... It's magical. Highly recommend to anyone who hasn't seen it.

I was replaying a friends wad trying to incorperate different ideas of his into a workable concept I could fall back on if I ever want to make another map. Hes more techbase/human shootout type guy, but theres some good slaughter elements there, specifically how his beastiary changed how his ammo itemization was placed.

Its streamlined. I could really learn a thing or two because I tend to waste a lot of time with mine. I was recently going over it and it still smacks good.

Quake in DosBox, for the very first time! I'm not a fan of Quake but recently I was thinking about playing it so just started playing some maps in Easy mode. It's quite fun!

Ashes 2063, a post apoc shooter based on Doom, which takes inspiration from Fallout and Stalker. It's too good for a f2p game.

Decided to start Back To Saturn X E1 again. Played it about halfway-ish a while back but never got to finishing it. Once I beat it, gonna start E2.

Doom II, Nobody Told Me About iD - Back to basics, again. No ROTT weapons this time around for variety's sake. Really interesting to observe how Doom II's maps are a bit more sprawling and more confident in what they try to do than Doom's maps. Little bits of feedback like Mancubi bullet patterns intentionally aiming to counter the effectiveness of player strafing are neat, too.

Doing my first playthrough of Scythe. I probably have blown through it before in Skulltag co-op like a decade ago, but I'm doing my first true UV Max Pistol Start Saveless playthrough.  Currently trying to conquer MAP26.

I'm trying out Heretic for the first time. So far the game is pretty okay, though all the various elements of the game blur together for me like crazy. From the enemies, to the weapons to the visuals. E1M6, however, makes me seriously consider dropping the game. I don't feel like humping every single wall out there just to try and figure out how to get to the green door. If simply progressing through the levels has me searching for unkmarked wall passages and tucked away switches, then I don't think that I really need to experience any more of this or it's sequel.

After seeing DFF playthrough The Rebirth with the latest version of Corruption Cards, I decided to play something with that mod. CC is very fun, and I wanted to play something I hadn't played in a while, so I downloaded Valiant: Vaccinated Edition. I've never played this nerfed version before, so not having a super chaingun is kinda weird, and no arachnorbs is odd too, but it's still a very good WAD with all the DeHackEd stuff taken out. As for the new CC, it's got some interesting new cards. I'm trying to always chose a new card I haven't seen before in other versions whenever they come up. I have found 2 different cards that grow vegetation, which is surprisingly annoying considering they obstruct your view of things. I played through map 8 on Classic, and the last card I got gives Former Humans the ability to through eggs that have random things inside them. From enemies, to items, and more! Explains how I got a BFG in that map. CC is a great mod, so I'm glad I'm trying this new version out on a fantastic WAD
