What are you playing now?

Arrival.

Thoroughly enjoying it. The levels open up in interesting ways, the combat and route findings are flowing, the fights are interesting. Also little of the stuff I don't like; platforming, BFG spam, ammo starvation, walls or barons.

It's also nice to playing something that doesn't feel like it's imitating the modern Sunlustian style. I've recently played too many like that, with visual mix of bold and dark colours in abstract worlds, the set piece battled every time you hit a switch of pick up a key , etc. It's so nice to play engaging levels that do not feel like lower quality Sunlust clones.

Was playing Requiem but kinda gave up on it halfway, just didn't grip me enough.

That's hilarious, I'm going through Requiem again rn after having not seen it in a little over a decade, reached MAP17 in a day, aged well, as did Memento Mori II altho I'd be hard pressed to call Requiem MM3 as it feels more it's own thing. I did MM2 prior after beating MM1 and liked it a lot more than I did a long time ago, prefer it to the original on almost every way.

So. What they say about Community Chest Map 29 being bullshit is true. Gave up on it and played Map 30. First map I ever gave up on. Continuing my playthrough of the reviews by Dean of Doom and now playing Auger Zenith and enjoying it so far.

CC1 is the worst megawad I've played so far, I'm kind of astounded how awful it is and good chunk of the maps weren't even for the project in the first place, they simply didn't have enough maps to contribute for 32 slots. CC2 was honestly not that much better imho. I only like 3 and 4.

I'm in an Heretic mood so I played the IWAD a bit but downloaded the Heretic Upstart Mapping Project today, it's been fun so far.

Replaying Doom 2 the Way Id did.  Just saved at the beginning of Map 17 The Precinct

I played it about two years ago when i was getting back into Doom. Maps that i used to have a hard time on, have been going easier now.

Overall i think that i prefer it over the original.

Currently playing some early nineties shovelware (my favourite!)  from Demon Gate. I remember grabbing this from a bargain bin from back in the day, it's always been in my gaming collection.

For the last couple years, I've been going back to my bucket list of 90s stuff I've always wanted to play but never did for some reason. I just finished up Perdition's Gate which was alright, if not way too easy. I just started Eternal Doom and oh my gosh, these maps are a little long in the tooth. I'm only three levels in and starting to fatigue.

I’m currently going through Speed of Doom for the first time - really liked the Cliffside Siege (although it reminded me that my AV playthrough is also still in progress, on the first secret map there).

Yesterday I glanced thru recent idGames submission, and spotted Starshine, by the author of Glaive-series. I have played Warglaive and enjoyed it, and at least the first map of this new 3-map set was great. Looking forward to playing the rest tonight.

Requiem's last ten maps were uh...not very good. Guess I only recently learned this megawad was technically released as a beta and they had trouble filling in slots. A shame, because the first 19 or so maps were so good and detailed.

I beat Operation: Biowar recently and still enjoy it despite the fact it is way too easy and very short, but rather something end while the going's still good than drag on with mediocre map after mediocre map. I am now on Nova: The Birth, as my goal is to revisit it and Nova II: New Dawn before finally playing Nova III.

Finally started playing Fractured Worlds.

Decided play on UV, with limited amount of saves per map, because I crave some insanely tough challenge right now.

I am prepared to lower the difficulty, once I reach a point of Not Having Fun.

I've been playing a hell of a lot of Age of Empires 2 recently and then switched to Diablo 2. I really like a game that you can sit back and play while listening to podcasts. About to start Project Warlock, hoping it'll be good.

Reached MAP18: Power Core of NOVA: The Birth, this wad aged better than I recall. Community sets nowadays generally have a much higher degree of polish, even with the aim of this megawad being to get newbie mappers in the door, there's a lot of good on display here. Can't say I'm much of an EvilNed fan though, certainly lives up to his name. Sewer levels and annoying fights.

playing plutonia for the first/second time on UV. First time I got to map 13 but I decided to start over without using saves and got to map 21 now. I like plutonia so far, it's hard but fun

Heroes' Tales

My first experience of the Russian community's maps, I'll be tactful and say my reactions are 'mixed'. Too many cramped maps, over-reliance on ambushes as the mainspring of the action, pop-up enemies, teleporting shenanigans, lazy overuse of Archviles. There are some impressive levels of course, and I'd rate MAP11 as a mini-masterpiece for example, but on the whole I'll be glad to get this out of the way (on MAP25 at the moment).

Aside from many other wads, I played first two maps of Stardate 20x6 on HMP. So far I’ve been pleasantly surprised, I thought it’d be much more sadistical, but it’s been like the first levels of Sunlust on HMP, so that I’d almost like to try on UV.

But that’s first two levels, I emphasize. Still, beautiful, fun and inspiring.

Finally finished Hatomo Battles the Yomi Demons the other day. Some exquisite detailing, and a good sense of progression from one map to the next, in terms of the complexity of the architecture and layouts, at least. Gameplay wise it kind of felt like each map was "the one before it, but a bit more": the encounters never really matched the complexity of the maps themselves, though that could be because I played this first run through on "easy" (easy and hard modes are selected by a neat little Quake-styled hub-world at the off.)

And that might seem to be a negative. But as an attempt at a traditional "Doom II but more" episode, it succeeds admirably; although the almost consistently claustrophobic environments give off more of a Doom I vibe for mine. It's almost too much of a good thing, but the episode length was practically perfect in that it ensured that the WAD didn't outstay its welcome. Tobias Münch's "Larlar's Grounds" was definitely the standout for me, because it started pretty hot and rarely took its foot off the gas.

Will definitely come back to it at a higher difficulty at some point.

I should get back into Akeldama, but mouldy's return has distracted me...

I decided to give Urania a try. The combat and general atmosphere were excellent, and I had high hopes for this megawad, but issues soon arose. After taking maybe 35-40 minutes killing all the monsters and finding most of the secrets in MAP03, it took me another hour to locate the exit and work out how to access it. Not good at all - one really needs to be able to finish a map promptly in these circumstances, otherwise it turns into a massively alienating experience, not to mention an anticlimax.

Next took about an hour to dispose of most of the opposition in MAP04, then spent about two hours searching for the blue key, which is needed to exit the map. Eventually had to look at a YouTube walkthrough.

Enough is enough! What a waste - 90% of this megawad is top drawer, based on the stuff I played, but the progression issues have rendered it unplayable for me.

Recently finished Anomaly Reborn, fantastic megawad that everyone should play. Now i'm slowly going through Nostalgia and a friend's map project.

Been slogging my way through RAMP 2021 before going on to this year's RAMP, currently about 90 maps in. TBH, a good chunk of the maps aren't that great due to the fact that there were no limits on how many maps one person could submit. But when the good maps hit, boy do they make up for it

Lost civilization, heard good things but that's about it. I like to keep my wad experiences spoiler free.. so hoping for the best.

Currently playing Whispers of Satan. Played it years ago, revisiting with a brand new appreciation. Definitely a favourite of mine alongside Requiem and Alien Vendetta.
