since doom2,every id's game still have its moment.if asked quake fan,we still get totally different answer.i just went to shacknews and found the poll with similar question like this(best quake? 1/2/3 ?).and the majority of user there answer quake1

q2 was good, but i like q1 better, i hated the trekking back and forth through levels, the guns were cool and stuff, but it was missing something. q1 was good and it's not as good as the doom games were but id hasnt made a better game since (q3a:GAG!) but i hope doom3 will be up to par if not better than the original games

The Quake I player model looks like a voodoo doll, IMO.

What were you expecting? I remember getting 32 megs or RAM and a Matrox Mystique to play that game in high res.

I love all Quakes in one way or another. Regardless of their strenghts and faults, I can load them and have fun for hours even after all these years. I'm pleased.

Well, I did get the q2 demo, and it feels like every other game iD has done since doom1 : standard, boring, half-assed, and rehashed.

I would like !!! iD !!! software more if they would do something original and innovative with their games. Sure, Carmack's a great programmer and a lot of my favorite games are built using iD's engines, but there isn't an !!! iD !!! I would play through a second time save the Dooms.

Quake was actually supposed to be a lot different then it was. But it just came out as a halfassed copy of Doom and the same thing has applied to just about every game they've made so far.

Carmack: Alright, I've got a great new idea for Doom 3!
iD: Yay!
Carmack: Ok, you're lost in a scary base... for 2/3rds of the game!
iD: Yay!
Carmack: Which makes for two total themes throughout the game, including the last hell maps! Now here's the weapon lineup;

Fist > Double Chainsaw > Shotgun > Super Shotgun > Sub Machine Gun > Chain Gun > Rocket Launcher > Double Plasma Gun > BFG 11k

iD: Yay!
Carmack: We'll be sure that the weapons are morbidly unbalanced for DM!
iD: Yay!
Carmack: It will feel just like Quake, Quake 2, and Quake 3! So we can be sure the player is familiar with the game! It will be like beating Quake 2 for the millionth time!
iD: Yay!
Creative iD member: Excuse me, mr. Carmack, that sounds dandy and all, but I've got some great ideas that might help the game innovate the FPS genre!

1.) New level themes!
2.) New and original weapons!
3.) New -

Carmack: Crew, take this man out to the anti-romero shrine and have him stoned to death!
iD: Yassuh!

Lemme tell you why I think saying that Id software sucks makes you look like a moron.

1. They make the greatest engines on Earth - a company which sucks wouldn't be anywhere near capable of that. Now Id software haven't focused on improving gameplay in their games since Doom, because they have been focused on improving netcode and that sort of thing, plus they intend to create new engines for other developers to use - not make the best games in the world.

2. They made Wolfenstein 3d and Doom, which at the time they were new were the best games out there, technically as well as gameplay-wise.
The Quakes were all focus on multiplayer gaming, which lends little focus on innovation and RtCW was developed by Graymatter, Id was only overseeing the project.

So there.

So there. What a stupid fight. Oh and dsm is "id" all in lowercase actually. That's how they spell it both in the site and in the logo.

Probably so, but I'll feel like an idiot if I don't reply :p

And I did openly state that I credited them as coders, and that many, many of my favorite games were made using their engines. However you do not play the engine, you play the content put into it. Games are always becoming more and more technologically and graphically advanced and I refuse to believe that Carmack and friends are the only ones keeping it that way. As coders, id are excellent. As game designers, they are mediocre at best.

Besides, the Quake games are some of the last games I'd play multiplayer with, but I guess that's just me.

I do know how pointless it is. It's just that I'm bored and can't be arsed to fix this hardware problem I have with the Geforce and the motherboard, in fact, I can't. I gotta wait the next drivers. I can't play games for more than half an hour before everything breaks apart. I'm not in the mood to work in my projects because it's too goddamn hot today.

So I'm just idling and shouting at everything on sight. Cheers.
