Ultimate Doom demos [-complevel 3]

Recommended Posts

I just realized something was wrong with the .txts of the last 3 Demos (Exe doesn't match up with Port used, the actual one is Port used), may fix it later.

Anyways, here's an unexpected Demo

E1M8 UV-Speed (31,11):

I'm really, really sorry to do this, but I couldn't find the so-called "Upload new attachment" feature for uploading the new ZIPs (Grazza's post that mentioned that feature is over 10 years old), nor do I know about what should I do in these cases nowadays, so I'll have to do it here. Not that it's a huge mistake, but I better avoid them. Please know to forgive me.

E3M6s Stroller (18,20):

s3m6s018-Alaux.zip

E3M6s UV-Speed (6,83):

e3m6s-06-Alaux.zip

E3M6s Stroller (17,74):

s3m6s017-Alaux.zip

Ignore the previous uploads of these Demos, if possible. Yet again, I'm really sorry. I'll try to avoid this scenario in the future.

If you click edit, you should see a list of files below the input box. There should be Delete options next to them, and you can drag and drop a file in to upload a new one. Not a huge deal either way. :)

I wasn't aware it worked that way now. Thanks!

This is an endless loop... anyways, congratulations.

Mind if I ask how does Quickstart work? I never understood it.

Someone who uses Crispy will have to confirm for its quickstart logic, but in PrBoom+ I just have to start moving during the wipe screen, and I move on the second tic. Used to move on the first in Windows 7, but somehow, that got worse with Windows 10.

Basically you press the movement keys at the exact moment the game starts to register your inputs to get a little boost?

Also, I can't believe you made such an explanation for the wall bump considering the only thing I thought about was "maybe I can glide with some wall"

P.D.: I simply abuse the edit feature.

Actually relevant P.D.: If I hadn't messed up with the switch, I could already be around 17.57-17.63

I'm using Windows 10, and unless I screw up, I get movement on the first tic. I see from your txts that you are still using 2.5.1.4. There's no reason not to use 2.5.1.5 unless SDL2 is no-go for you for some reason.

Edit: hang on, you mention the wipe screen. I've got that fucker turned off. :p

Regarding quickstart, yes, you need to time your first key press before the game starts, but do so too early and the whole thing screws up, and you need to abandon the attempt immediately. For some very short runs where a quickstart is essential to have any chance of achieving the target time, this accounts for about half of my attempts, actually. :/ If there is a need for some specific movement in the first part of a second, then some manual dexterity is useful. I generally try to get forward movement going right from the start and to add strafing (or whatever else is needed) as soon as possible thereafter. It is good to check with LMPC or XDRE to see what inputs are registering and when. If it turns out that you have a bunch of WT tics at the start, then it's possible your set-up isn't right, and some adjustment in the settings (often matching the game resolution to your desktop resolution) is needed to avoid some processing bottleneck.

Indeed I have had many Demos with a lot of WTs at the beginning, and Crispy has a little issue that Chocolate doesn't: sometimes it opens in the background, leaving me still in the Explorer window. But changing the resolution? Really?

I guess I got as far as I could with adjusting the game's resolution, I've set it on the .cfg (1366x768), and I use Fullscreen without forced aspect ratio, I prefer a stretched out image (I actually like it) instead of black bars at the sides.

Well, as Edward put it, "The display doesn't have to reset if the resolution remains the same."

Hm, I can try turning off wipe screen I guess. SDL2 turning seemed very unfamiliar to me, so I couldn't be bothered to switch.

Nice, you got first tic movement this time, so your quickstart is fine. Even though you bumped, by starting on the wall earlier, you actually got to a higher speed on the wallrun (14 units per tic vs my 11). I'd say all combined, quickstart, no bump, early wall start with fast wallrun, and perhaps turning on the first tic, something like 17.54 or 17.51? :)

Gee, thanks.

If you say 17.54/17.51 can be a thing, it will be.

How far have we come, from so simple a beginning. I'm really enjoying all my attempts.

I was thinking about you joining us. Well done, m8

EDIT: I checked your Demo with XDRE, I think you simply got to press the switch faster than us

I did check the demo compared to mine; the big time save (3 tics) is the wallrun happening instantly, which is just kind of a random time save/gain, makes it hard to judge an optimal time here. The other tic was hitting the exit switch earlier. Based on what maximum speeds can be achieved on that wall and the fact that there's still one wait tic in dep's demo at the start, 17.46 or 17.43 seem like plausible times to me now. But as I said, with this wallrun, who knows? Additionally, perhaps there are other places where boosts can be achieved (and there's of course, the option of boosting from the shotgun guy at the start shooting at you).

I have tried to get the shotgun guy to boost me (at least in one of my published demos I fire my pistol to alert him), but he always misses. If it was on Nightmare maybe he would not miss, but seems like it's not an option with the route we've been using so far.

There are a couple approaches to get some damage from him, but unfortunately, not much time gain it seems. Here's 17.49 again.

Great. I'll check the demo later.

Page 15 of this thread lasted like forever, and we're at page 17 already?

I feel 4shock and depr4 are bullying a newcomer, hahaha. Anyway, I'm supporting @Alaux.
