Doom Alpha: Ideas for future wads?

Recommended Posts

Sodaholic was working on some Doom Alpha thing, but he got sidetracked by some really queer sprite comic made by a major queer.

Am I the only one who thinks that the Alpha maps were slightly more realistic than those of the original doom 1? Aside from bad alignment, the maps look quite plausible to make if it were real

I have been working on and off on a project that cleans up alpha levels and makes them work and all of that. I haven't shown much about it, but if there's any interest I guess I could toss up a screenshot or two.

Uh, OP, those are just screenshots of the 0.4 version itself, probably taken in DosBox.

Come on, PDF's not that bad. I mean, yeah, he can be over-dramatic and downright arrogant at times, but he's not too bad about it these days.

Besides, I've restarted my Doom Alpha project anyway (my thread linked earlier), so I'm working on both at the same time.

Hm, I might be interested. What are they based on? 0.4 or 0.5?

The levels are based on both -- if it's present in 0.4 I use the 0.4 version as a base, and if it's present only in 0.5 then naturally, I obviously use the 0.5 level.

dmalphapic10.bmp

Sure looks like a BMP.

Were I you, I'd batch convert them all using Photoshop or irfanview, as that's probably the easiest way. Almost any half-decent image editing program should be able to save them as a paletted PNG though, even MSPaint.

Thanks mithran. I couldn't do it since there's no program, i don't think, that edits or makes .png files for windows 2000, since that's what i'm using. I seriously need to get a better comp.

[EDIT]
And i just checked. they are BMP. sorry about that. I don't know how to convert them to PNG format tho, since MSpaint for win2k doesn't do PNGs. and i don't have the money to buy another comp yet...

Did you try Irfanview? I'm not sure if the current release supports Windows 2000, but the program has been around since like 1996, so it's not a crapshoot.

I think GIMP might also work for you, though if your system is really low on RAM, it might be more of a resource hog than it's worth. It supposedly does run on Win2K, though.

I tried both programs. It seems my computer sucks more than it should. Anyway, i put the pics in hyperlink format instead, so there wouldn't be anymore complaints on the topic. Thanks for the help though, Mithran.

I'm surprised IrfanView doesn't work, what Service Pack are you using with Win 2000? XnView is another image viewer/converter you could try.

actually i made a alpha e1m1/m11 inspired map for the doom the way ID did project, and also a alpha layout styled speed mappings is in the building for a personal project (finished today), anyway if you search for a alpha doom styled megawads, check out the lost episode by xaser, also deathzor made 2 remakes of 0.4 amd 0.5 for official doom, in his web page there could be somewhere... and wait for sodaholic TC...
