The Doom Confessional Booth

Recommended Posts

I almost always design my maps where you have to collect the red key first, blue second, then finally the yellow to get to the exit. I always follow that order (usually just unintentionally), even if there is a key missing, like red first than blue to get to the exit, or just red.

Those weird teeth-monsters in Doom 3: Resurrection of Evil creeped me the fuck out when I first encountered them.

It would be cool if they brought those back at some point.

I think you're referring to the Bruiser, those cyborg demons with television monitors for mouths and dual flame throwers. I love those monsters and wish they would come back for a new Doom game. I was hoping they would make a return in Doom 4. There's always next time.

Yep, that's the one. They're really creepy and I love the design. I don't think it fits the comic-book style of Doom 4 though.

The last 10 or so maps in doom 2 are so hard for me to stomach. I've only played em once or twice in my whole life. I'm so unfamiliar with them that if I came into a room and saw someone playing one of the maps I would assume they're playing a shitty 90s pwad.

The Cherubs in regular Doom 3 scared the shit outta me to the point where in my first playthrough I didn't want to play the game any more.

*clears throat*

-I hate every popular megawad you guys mention.
-Instead I am nuts for shitty crack mods and mockawads.
-Even UACMN, and the sequel.

Uhh...

-I am a bitch for Samsara co-op (haven't been on any server for a year)
-I gather every urban factory, school, hospital(or whatever) map I can find, because I HATE hell maps and techbases (and I personally think Doom wasn't just made for hell maps or techbases, get creative guys!)
-I keep replaying my own maps with every gameplay mod I can find (because my maps are not hell maps and techbases)

Also...

-I want to make my own zombie mod (that turns every monster into a zeddie) but I don't know how to and I am too lazy to learn how.
-Generally too lazy to learn advanced map design tricks so I am stuck with low quality but highly decorated cliches (I don't even know how to color-code doors, I just place a button or a serie of them)
-Really want to learn to replace sprites with my own but I give up too fast, only maps (corridors, vistas, arenas, boss segments) keep me glued and working.

Only the last ten? There's a few of the silly gimmicky ones earlier - I'm looking at you, Tricks and Traps.

well that's oddly specific

"Shitty 90s pwad" are 3 words. Bzzrak considered 2 of them true (as describing the IWAD in question), making the statement 2/3 right, aka roughly 67% right.

Am replaying build games and finding them more fun than I remember. I feel like am cheating on doom because I think their original designs are way more impressive than our beloved Iwads vanilla :P.

Then again all of them were released several years later.

I have lots of great ideas for Doom levels but lose interest after 20 sectors or less when mapping. Lots of partially-finished wads on my computer. Part of it is losing steam quickly but part of it is that you have to really stand out to get any sort of feedback or interest these days. The last part is that I'm a perfectionist and mapping is very draining for me. Oh, and I have two kids under 2 (not that that was always a valid excuse).

Try to drawing these layout on a paper before opening doom builder. One of the many reasons why mapping was so draining for me was because I was always trying to do so many different stuff at the same time (make the layout, texturize, decorate, place things and test before having half of the level done). It helped me focusing in one task at a time.

Thank you for the idea. I might just have to try it some time.

I have an unhealthy obsession with zombiemen.

I often find myself standing still with chasecam on in GZDoom, spawning in a zombieman, and letting it shoot me to death over the course of a few minutes. Despite the fact that I've done this a fuckton of times before, I still do it semi-regularly. Not even for mod testing purposes- sometimes I boot up old Doom2.wad, take a shot from the start of Entryway, and watch the retard parade come down the corridor to gradually ping me to death.

Did Four Loko mention HDoom...

Anyway, I find it annoying that people tend to say "UDMF format" rather than just "UDMF". The former, expanded, would be "Universal Doom Map Format format" :/ same goes for "TAS run"/"TAS speedrun", which is literally "tool assisted speedrun run/speedrun". Yep.

I read both of the original Doom novels front to back, and I haven't read more than a couple dozen novels in my whole life.

I also heard Two Part Invention number 13 for the first time when I was a young child, it was a pipe organ music track on a Doom custom wad and I've been looking for the damn thing ever since. Please, if anyone has seen/played this wad, tell me!!

Or how saying DC Comics is "Detective Comics Comics".

Something about the Doom monster AI is intensely hypnotic. It's a little like watching ants go about their business.
