nxGangrel Posted April 11, 2017 I always figured the official name was "Plasma Gun". I just never liked saying plasma gun, and rifle came more naturally. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Tracer Posted April 11, 2017 I always thought that "super shotgun" sounded childish. I rarely call it that. I just say double barreled shotgun usually. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Empyre Posted April 11, 2017 It is called PlasmaRifle in DECORATE. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
42PercentHealth Posted April 11, 2017 In the Descent series, it's called "plasma cannon." I accidentally called it a plasma rifle and got strange looks from my siblings, who are forbidden to play Doom and were wondering why I said that. :-P 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
scifista42 Posted April 11, 2017 It's a gun, it fires plasma, "plasma gun" is faster and easier to pronounce than "plasma rifle", so it's plasma gun for me. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Deleted_Account Posted April 11, 2017 Am I misremembering things or does the Doom II manual refer to the super shotgun as the combat shotgun? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
damerell Posted April 11, 2017 13 minutes ago, Piper Maru said: Am I misremembering things or does the Doom II manual refer to the super shotgun as the combat shotgun? I hope not; DoomRL uses "combat shotgun" to mean the single-barrel pump-action shotgun. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted April 11, 2017 Strictly speaking, "plasma rifle" doesn't make much sense because why would a plasma weapon's barrel be rifled? Heck would it even have a barrel in the first place? On the other hand, "rifle" kind of implies some sort of military weapon (rifleman, etc.) and it's not like weapon names in Doom are very accurate in the first place (cf. "chaingun"). So who cares. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

It's always be "Medikit" to me in every single game, just because I got so used to the Doom naming. Even in every other game where it's called a Medkit, I'll still add an "i" into the middle. 1 Quote Share this post Link to post

One should always beware the argument from etymology, because it's usually wrong - it's entirely plausible in the future (maybe even now) there are "rifles" without rifling... 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Gez Posted April 12, 2017 Nope, chain guns (two words) are a real thing. A chain gun is driven by an external motor instead of using energy from the cartridge's detonation to cycle the weapon. In a normal machine gun, the mechanisms to eject the spent cartridge and load the next are powered by the shot; which has the drawback that if the cartridge is a dud, the weapon gets jammed. On a chain gun, since it's powered by a motor, a dud cartridge just gets ejected normally. Another thing is that chain guns have a single barrel. If you have a rapid-fire weapon with several rotating barrels, you're looking at a minigun. If you have rotating barrels and no motor to drive them, requiring the operator to hand-crank it, you're looking at a Gatling gun. The real-world weapon the closest to Doom's chaingun is probably the microgun. It was a commercial failure; they should have used Doom for their marketing. 4 Quote Share this post Link to post

I think so too, from the art, but that's not what a chain gun is. Also, a Gatling gun's multiple barrels are mostly there to prevent overheating; firing high-energy rounds at a high rate of fire makes a lot of heat. You don't need that to fire pistol bullets at moderate speed - an ordinary submachine gun does it. (And, while I like the art, Doom's chaingun basically is an ordinary submachine gun). Edited April 12, 2017 by damerell apparently wrong but what do I know about guns? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

But I was only referring to the game one not the real life one which is why I named it one word just like in the game, but what I said was poorly worded as I didn't mean to imply there's no real chain gun. On another note the Doom comic is surprisingly accurate to the game version of the weapon: Edited April 12, 2017 by Avoozl 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Sawed-off shotguns are actually a bit less powerful than their full-length counterparts. The only reason people saw them short is for the purpose of hiding them in their clothing, vehicles, etc., usually for less-than-honorable purposes. So they're illegal in most (all?) US states. I don't think Doomguy is concerned about hiding his weapons. I also don't think the US government is concerned about Doomguy using an illegal weapon to save the earth from invasion. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

No, it only fires 20 pellets, and each zombie requires 2-3 pellets to die. If the RNG really loves you, you might get 8, but I think 5 or 6 is more likely. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
