Yeah, that would be a smart decision, current consoles are very old and I doubt they could squeeze much more out of them.

Carmack has said several times that they're setting up certain things in their media creation so they might wind up with a cross-generational game.

More recently Tim Willits confirmed that id Tech 5 scales up and down really well so there's no problem in that regard, they might just turn it up.
