Maes Posted July 5, 2012 THE MORALE OF THIS THREAD: The Doom demons are a bunch of miserable sad motherfuckers. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
NiuHaka Posted July 5, 2012 My version of the Demon has pretty small hands that are just there for balance. Too small for anything other than that. Without them he would just fall forward. But he is so disloyal to the source material (i.e., the tail) that I guess that it doesn't really matter. The point is that I noticed that the demon had those arms hanging there and didn't actually use them in game so I found a reason for their existence and ran with it. I think that reason works for the original Demon as well. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
schwerpunk Posted July 5, 2012 Kind of off topic, but I really like the look of those models. Very smart, restrained use of polygons. Reminds me of all the best elements of the Lithtech engine games (though it looks like you're using soft-skin texturing (which looks even better)). This is coming from someone who absolutely can't play 30 seconds of Doom with any kind of 3D models on. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Platinum Shell Posted July 5, 2012 I agree, those models are simpily too awesome for words. Love your revamp on the Demon. (A link would be awesome) Ontopic: Yeah, I suppose they just are for balance. (leading me to believe Pinkies are a non-naturally occuring demon) But then again, I could be wrong; look at the Cyberdemon. (and not his butt, Maes!) He's actually a natural demon, as BJ Blazkowics fought him many many years before Doom took place, under the then title, "The Harbringer of Doom". 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
schwerpunk Posted July 5, 2012 I like the idea of coming up with lore for what exactly the demons are, and trying to glean a sort of science or logic behind their appearance. What I'd really be interested in hearing more about is what their actual creators (at id at the time) thought they were, if anything other than boogeymen. Maes Posted July 5, 2012 The very least, Pinky's arms would be like those of a pretty damn tough bodybuilder, compared to human ones, with maybe only the forearms being somewhat disproportionate compared to the biceps (though the next picture from a frontal view disproves it): They are not as strong as the Baron's, for instance, but much more muscular than the Imp's, and definitively much more stronger than most human ones. In any case, they are far from vestigial, and they are quite proportionate to the rest of the body too. Any longer and they would be ridiculous, making it look like a monkey. Any shorter and then they would really be stumps. The animation frames are also inconsistent, making them appear smaller from some angles and larger from others. Even that way, they only look small compared to that abnormally large head, but then so does the rest of the body. My "guess" at their function? Balance, and occasional grabbing and gutting stuff open, though the head is more convenient for most tasks (or simply so damn big that it gets in the way). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Phobus Posted July 5, 2012 Their shoulders look incredibly powerful too, so there's probably quite a lot of potential for them to tear a human arm, leg or head clean off, if they weren't so clearly geared to biting. @NiuHaka: That Demon looks rather cartoonish to me. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
NiuHaka Posted July 5, 2012 Phobus said:@NiuHaka: That Demon looks rather cartoonish to me. Well, it is cartoonish. The texture used in that image is actually outdated. The latest texture has the pink (red & magenta) hues turned down a little and the yellows turned up but I didn't want to deviate too far. I still want him to be called a pink demon. The following screenshot is a better view of how my version uses his arms for balance. He could possibly use them for other things such as a chicken still uses his wings to fly but I'm assuming that grabbing things isn't it's arms optimal function. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Actually, I kinda like that idea... edit: also unrelated, on topic of Ascension... I can't see the Zombie Guy's gun very well, but it looks like the Hero Gun form Blade Runner. Intentional? If not, neat anyways. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

It's interesting to me that people think my pinky demon looks cartoonish but they don't think the same about the other monsters. They all look cartoonish to me. Actually taking a little influence from Quake 3. BloodyAcid said:Those pinkies should start attacking with their hands instead of just trying to bite And/or with their horns. What's with all these Doom monsters with useless horns? I've always wished the Cyberdemon would ram you when you got too close... I'm placing that as a none-essential Ascension feature. You are awesome for noticing. This mod is full of Easter-Egg-ish stuff. The gun is intended to look like the Blade Runner Blaster but give reason for doubt when up close. I have hidden sci-fi (among other) references throughout the mod but that is definitely one of the more obvious ones. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

That would of been cool, some one should make sprites for that Also a majority of 3D models for Doom look cartoonish 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
bcwood16 Posted July 6, 2012 Phobus said:@NiuHaka: That Demon looks rather cartoonish to me. Yea they all do have a slight cartoonish look to them, but as somebody lucky enough to have seen them in game they work really well. I must admit the Demon in the picture does look more cartoonish then the rest, but in game it looks awesome and its realistic movements all add to it looking quite fearsome! I actually found my self panicking a little when I first saw it charging towards me. A feeling I have not had since the first time I saw the original all those many many years ago! Pictures just dont show how amazing Doom Ascension is looking and animating :) EDIT - Sorry for going of topic. Personally I think it would be interesting to have the demon arms animate to grab your head and pull it towards its huge mouth lol 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Avoozl Posted July 6, 2012 The addition of the tail makes it look more like a dinosaur imo. :P 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Quasar Posted July 7, 2012 SNES DOOM's Cyberdemon could scratch the fuck outta you, or so rumor has it :P That's where the manual's quip about him being able to "really reach out and touch you" supposedly arises. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Blastfrog Posted July 7, 2012 Eh, SNES version wasn't accurate at all, anyway, so it therefore sucked. It's only redeeming qualities was it's PC version theme and it's cool soundtrack, the gameplay and mechanics were abysmal at best. Hell, for gameplay, I actually prefer the 32X version over the SNES version. If only it had decent sound... 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Sounds more like somebody had noticed the rather phallic origin and appearance of his rockets when you're standing face on to him getting ready to suck it down. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
