Hellbent Posted September 26, 2012 As far as I know there isn't a category for sparse, economical wad design, and there should be, because there are not enough maps that try for the most amount of distinct, compelling level design with as few sectors, lines, and vertices as possible (you know, like the way the original Doom did). Agree? Yes, no? Is there even a category for vanilla maps? EDIT: I still think DW should create a "Newbies & Hazings" sub-forum in /vb/morons for entertaining, "sub-par" threads (since these specific kinds of threads come along so frequently). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
45th Parrallel Posted September 26, 2012 So basically its a best vanilla wad category? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Khorus Posted September 26, 2012 No. Hellbent said:Is there even a category for vanilla maps? Why should there be? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Hellbent Posted September 26, 2012 Khorus said:No. Why should there be? Whadya mean why should there be? Of course there should be. The Cacowards should be like the Oscars--give out awards to honor each possible category. For the purists and what not, it makes finding good vanilla maps that much easier. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Khorus Posted September 26, 2012 Hellbent said:The Cacowards should be like the Oscars--give out awards to honor each possible category. We could have seperate awards for every port feature set, WAD gameplay style, throw in a top speedmap award, best author that hasn't released anything in at least 15 years etc. Or we could just stick to 10 solid releases from the year. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
ComicMischief Posted September 26, 2012 I think Hellbent's suggestion definitely wins 'best category' in the category category of the categorywards. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
hex11 Posted September 26, 2012 If there is such an award, surely it must go to every one of the "vanilla" maps that actually run in vanilla engine (this would probably be a short list...) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
GreyGhost Posted September 26, 2012 Hellbent said:Is there even a category for vanilla maps? With 3 vanilla mapsets in last years awards and 4 (that I know of) in previous years, is a vanilla-only category required? I think not. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Guest Posted September 26, 2012 A vanilla cacoward would be an awesome idea. The only question is whether the savegame buffer should be a determining factor. But otherwise, vanilla cacoward ftw !!! 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Vermil Posted September 26, 2012 If Vanilla, why not a category for every port (i.e best Doomsday wad, best ZDoom wad etc etc). If a new category is needed, I'd probably be all for it, but I don't think this is a category that is needed. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Phml Posted September 26, 2012 Making a vanilla, or "economical wad design" category would imply such wads have inherently lower gameplay value than other wads and must be defined by their limitations rather than their qualities, excused for their technology rather than praised for their design. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Snakes Posted September 26, 2012 This just sounds like an unnecessary idea, much as others have said. There are probably various other categories that would have more merit than a simple variation of the standard 10 awards. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
j4rio Posted September 26, 2012 While we're at cacoward debates, I'd vote 'demo of the year' for category - I'm not sure about what exactly should be criteriums, but I'd vote looper's 4p TAS demo here in any case. Regarding best gameplay mod, I think you'll run out of candidates within a year or two, or in other words, much faster than awards that were removed because of lack of nominations. I also think that with removing worst mod and mock award, cacowards partly lost its charm, but that's probably just me. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

j4rio Posted September 26, 2012 Dunno. If cacowards are meant to be some sort of yearly summary, why exclude demos? 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
dew Posted September 26, 2012 it's not their goal to summarize all things doom that happened in the past year. demos had their own awards and reducing them to a single measly bandwaggoning subcategory is both undignified and asking for trouble. omg why this and not that, etc. just out of curiosity, how pissed off would you be if a (great) CTF demo won the demo category? :P 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
j4rio Posted September 26, 2012 Depends on whether I'd manage to watch it. (: I did state that I'm not sure what exactly should be criterium, which was supposed to imply that it's a matter of debate and eventual settling on something. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
kmxexii Posted September 26, 2012 dew said:wouldn't it make more sense to revive the golden cyber instead of bloating cacowards? It would be cool if the demo scene awards were revived, as painful as that would have to be for the judges. I think Ralphis brought up a multiplayer-oriented award ceremony, too. As far as a vanilla specific award goes, any vanilla mapset that would receive such an award should in theory be worth a normal Cacoward. Unless you're lobbying to make sure the Cacowards always recognize at least one vanilla mod every year, which is nice from a sentimental standpoint. I don't think it's necessary, though. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Doomguy 2000 Posted September 26, 2012 I don't find this idea of a vanilla category necessary. Same goes with a category made specifically for demos. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
cannonball Posted September 26, 2012 I think there should be an award for best speedrun, hey we put a lot of effort into runs so I think it's only fair that the best ones should be acknowledged. Whether it should be in cacowards or like Dew said golden cyber is up for further discussion. Vanilla awards, all I can say is that vanilla mapping isn't dead yet (interception this year for starters) So I feel there will be many more vanilla wads released and will make the cut for the top prizes in doomworld :) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
TMD Posted September 26, 2012 I think Cacowards should get a massive overhaul and actually be done like *gasp* an award ceremony. 3 or 4 nominees in like a dozen or so departments, one voted winner by various community members. Examples: -Best Megawad -Best Single Map wad -Best Vanilla Wad -Best Mod -Best Multiplayer -Best Concept wad -Most Innovative wad -Mapper of Year -Wad of the Year (The Golden Cyberdemon) Really this is just a spitball, and would be cool to implement for the 20th anniversary edition. (no sense in game changing 10 months in) Then again, if it aint broke... 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Gez Posted September 27, 2012 Given how subjective "best" is, I really think the main cacowards' policy of saying "here's the ten best of the year, in no particular order and for no particular reason" is appropriate. The secondary categories (best DM, Mordeth, mock, etc.) are kinda superfluous, but they mostly allow to distribute more awards and do some commentary on additional mods. Creating categories would just encourage people to focus on these categories; in the same way that the Worst Wad and Mockaward encouraged people to flood the archive with crap. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Memfis Posted September 27, 2012 TMD: I don't like your idea. What if the best vanilla wad is also the best multiplayer wad and the most innovative wad? Will you give it all three awards or will you say "sorry but we don't give more than only award to the same wad, so AAA will get the vanilla award, BBB will get the multiplayer award and CCC will get the innovation award, even though AAA is a better MP wad then BBB and it is more innovative than CCC"? In my opinion, both options suck. P.S. I liked "Worst wad" and "Jokewad" categories a lot. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

In the end more wads get recognition, but the true superiors still stand out (and there are still 10-12 of them to boot). Its not too important, but it just seems more interactive and inspires more community involvement. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
elic Posted September 28, 2012 The current "10 best wads" format is fine. Organizing wads into single award categories would make things too subjective. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
