PSX Doom: The Lost Levels - New Pre-Beta Available courtesy of Salahmander2

Recommended Posts

Run the TC with the batch file, that already sets everything that we can. You can set resolution low as your video card supports. That's about it, really. The real quirks of the PSX renderer can't be simulated.

Someone could probably write a shader to do lighting closer to the original.

I am in the process of converting Steel Works. TNT Evilution MAP14. All textures done and will convert it to Zdoom in Hexen Format and go from there. Not sure if I can add coloured lighting though but will try.

It's easy to do color lighting in UDMF format, not Hexen. For Hexen you need ACS. For UDMF - just edit sector properties.

Cheers. I will reconvert the map. I have the original retextured vanilla version.

Had no problems in adding reverb!

I am having trouble converting the map to UDMF, converts it from a 160kb filesize to over 400kb and the map will not work so what I will do is add colored lighting by adding voodoo dolls to dummy sectors to trigger the colored lighting.

Tried converting from regular to UDMF as well as Hexen to UDMF and gotten the same result. I feel like such a beginner again.

What are you using to convert to UDMF?

I am using WAD2UDMF

Wad2udmf -input A.wad -output B.wad (example)

Steel works is 160kb in size.
Converts to a 430kb size.

I've not known that to happen before, it's always worked fine when I use it. Do you have a recent version?

Downloaded the version from page 1 of this forum thread. Waited half my life for the download. But I downloaded it.

Tried to convert it. Looked in XWE and the THINGS, LINEDEFS, SECTORS, SSECTORS, REJECT, BLOCKMAP has disappeared, etc.

Maybe I will send you the wad file for you to convert.

Should I send it to you in Hexen format or Vanilla format?

Had to shut down my PC because of a bad thunderstorm. But will send you the level in Hexen format afterwards.

Managed to figure out this and now present to you the PSX conversion of Steel Works which is in UDMF format.

Outdoor area is in a night setting.

Had to remove about 40 Former Humans and take out some of the detail like the 8 step staircases.

Level is quite dark as well. Replaces MAP01 and has a MAPINFO entry which contains the level name, the music track and choice of sky.

Salahmander2, feel free to upload a demo to youtube and make adjustments if necessary.

It's looking great so far, one problem, the monster variety points has gone well over 26, you may have to get rid of the Spider Mastermind.

Its hard for me to figure this out. Can you help me get the correct amount of points so I know what to remove.

Zombieman = 2 points = 26 max but some levels have close to 100 Zombiemen = 200 points. I don't get it. Dumb at maths for sure.

Best for me to take the mastermind out and just replace it with 4 Barons or something.

Edit: Oh, now I do get the variety. Is per monster type not overall monsters. Arrgghh silly me!

What I did was I removed the mastermind and moved 3 Arachnotrons into where the Mstermind was. I added Skill 4/5 to those 3 Arachnotrons in the middle. The removal of the Mastermind takes it down to 24.5 points.

Been working on another map. TNT MA21 - Administration Center.

This is the biggest map in Evilution. So anyway I have re-textured the entire map, replaced all transparent doors with regular woodmet2 doors and added many dummy sectors so a single texture overlay is no more than 256 in height.

The hardest bit to do was the long self building staircase which has now been replaced with 4 lifts with adjoining corridors.

The large outdoor area is now 384 in height with dummy sectors used on the green building which is now a rock2 building.

Tomorrow conversion to Zdoom and the addition of reverb and colored lighting and then check the monsters before uploading it.

The outdoor area will use the night sky to create an eerie feel.

Cyberdemon has been removed and replaced by Arachnotrons.

I'm sure that The Express Elevator to Hell (TEETH.WAD) will be the hardest map to do for sure because it will require lots of changes and dummy sectors, or even a complete change to the elevator to make it a spiral staircase or each section to accessed via teleport to a starting teleport room.

UPD: I'll take Administration Center map

Damn. ok, you must end this map, but you need to back Cyber. It means that variety of monsters will be small, but this map NEED cyber like Map 20 from Doom 2.

You can't just delete this monster on this map.

I will try and find a way to bring him back. Just need to adjust the other monsters, etc.

The monster's count on this map is 62.

It's hard to choose, but it's not hard like other maps there are no cyberdemons and you have count >46

Save only those monsters:

Cyberdemon
Demons of all types (demon, spectre, nightmare spectre)
Imps
Cacodemons
Lost Souls
Chaingunners

12 + 4 + 2,5 + 3 + 1 + 3,5 = 26

Of course you needn't to delete all "spawn points", you should replace monsters:

Revenants, Archviles, Hellknights, Barons => Nightmare Demons
Zombies, Sergeants => Imps or Chaingunners
Lost Souls => Pain Elementals (3 lost souls instead of 1 P.E.)

Also you can replace few Hellknights and Barons into group of Chaingunners.

Sadly the Cyberdemon had to go. Had no choice. Instead there is a big Arachnotron battle in his place.

Replaced all Zombimen with Shotgun Guys.
The lone Pain Elemental is now a Cacodemon accompanied by many Lost Souls.
Replaced all Revenants, Mancubuses and Barons with Hell Knights.

Turns out to be 26.

Uploading the map soon.

Here is the PSX version of Administration Center. MAP21 of TNT Evilution that was originally created by Drake O'Brien who also made MAP20 and MAP27 of Evilution. I like his maps, somewhat scrappy but stylish in their own ways.

This been the biggest level in Evilution needed lots of changes as you can see in the post above. Also major changes were needed to make sure the textures did not go for more than 256 so dummy sectors for example were added.

Sadly I had to replace the Cyberdemon with a big Arachnotron Battle. A shower of Plasma for you to dodge.

Converted to UDMF format with no problems. Music is PSXMUS01 and the sky is the FIRESK00.

Changes are welcome to be made for the final release.

I didn't change enemies, I've only changed final area size. With arachatrons this map on PSX will "freeze". Thats why I wanted Cyberdemon, because he can't make game slower.

I am now working on a new version. I am going to make the outdoor area even smaller. Bring the walls a bit closer and reupload.

Also the reason why I originally widened the outdoor area was because you could see below the sky from the stone platform in the NW.

But here is - Administration Center 1.2

Smaller Outdoor Area, outer walls raised.
Some Arachnotrons Removed.
