Demons ran around really fast on old PCs?

I don't think so, their speed is just doubled and it looks like they're faster because of all their zigzagging.

No, i mean, it's really fast in DOSBox and Chocolate Doom on my PC. Was it that fast in DOS on a 486?

Looks moer than double

It probably looked more than double because of the resolution and frame rate (blocky graphics with pronounced pixels at 35 FPS or less wasn't too clear as I remember it), but in reality Demons do just run double speed on Nightmare, which is surprisingly fast, seeing as usually they don't seem particularly quick compared to the player.

Fast compared to what? What are you playing in where they seem slow on NM?

Depends how many times you start Nightmare how fast they go. You can make them go infinitely fast and lock up the game if you do it enough :P Alternatively you can also make them walk so slow you'd have to wait 30 minutes for one 3 feet away to get close enough to bite you.

For many PC owners the S3 Trio was their first graphics accelerator, they'd make a difference in systems that might otherwise struggle with a graphics intensive game like Doom in "high detail" mode.
