I don't think he's quite that old, I know he was attending university in the late 90s, so even considering he might have been 30 or so in 95....but I didn't expect that! Only Gene Bird is older, but he's not mapping these days 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

For certain he's younger than me. The other question is hard to answer, but probably you'd need to have released, or at least submitted a map for testing, within the last 3 years, or have announced a project that you're working on within that time frame. It's an arbitrary measure, and perhaps overly strict. What are your thoughts? @LadyMistDragon How old is Gene Bird? He's been gone a llloonnnggg time, but after all, Insane_Gazebo came back, and that was delightfully unexpected. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Without thinking too hard I'd say releasing a map within the past year automatically qualifies you as active, not releasing anything in five disqualifies you, and anything in between is sort of self-regulated and/or dependent on past activity. The point is moot in this case though, since you're conclusively older, despite Capellan posting thumbnails on his youtube channel depicting him as a grizzled elder ;) 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

It will be awhile before I hit my 80's I have no clue where that number came from.. I am however still here several times a week watching the shenanigans, downloading and playing wads and watching demos. You don't see me because I do not post much, never have. Not a lot of "important" stuff to say, unlike so many others. I still love the wads and the demos, I still play and watch demos most every day. I am retired but pretty busy with life. I have at least half a dozen maps rotting on my hard drive that are in various stages of early 2000's vintage mapping, 2 are nearly done. It is unknown if they will ever see the light of day. I may post them some day just for historical reasons if any... Still the grandpa of Doom. Edit: fix Typo. Edited September 4, 2023 by Searcher Fix typos. 9 Quote Share this post Link to post

Wow, so happy to hear from you, and it's awesome that not only are you still here, but you are still active. I look like an idiot for saying you've "been gone a lllooonnnggg time", when you haven't been gone at all. You've made a significant number of posts this year, in fact. Shiver me timbers! Every time I hear your name discussed, I'm given the impression that you're not around. If only I had known you were Searcher, I'd have said, "No, Gene's still here, still a happy Doomer, so shut your yap." :) You are in fact the opposite of the kind of DW member I often discover, the ones who've been members since '99 or '00, and who still lurk around every few months, but who, in all those years, have only posted 50 times . . . or less. You've done a lot more than that. So cheers, Gene. I'm happy to know that you're "busy with life" and having a good time, and, referencing @Cutman 999, as one "Boomer fossil" to another, maybe we'll see those maps of yours someday. :) 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

I suppose they are just busy with life as well or if they still play games it may just be that they are playing the current games on the market. Personally I have just always loved this game and the many new wads constantly available to us to enjoy. Good to see you are still around as well. As far as my old unreleased maps they are still a question, the two that are nearly done.at 95% each have the biggest chance of ever seeing the archives. There are so many better maps than mine out there that I am not sure there is much need for old school these days. Perhaps a collaboration with someone could get them finished. Time will tell. 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Wow, so you are god damn Gene bird... How hard was making maps with absolutely primitive editors around the early 00's? 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Searcher Posted September 4, 2023 2 hours ago, Cutman 999 said: Wow, so you are god damn Gene bird... How hard was making maps with absolutely primitive editors around the early 00's? The early editing tools were a nightmare, but they were all that was available. They would just quit working, not save, not draw properly, or not work on certain platforms to name just a few problems. It was quite an adventure. Once you ended up redrawing your map several times then the node builders might let you down and ruin what you had. If you didn't have backups you were toast. There are likely some tearful stories in the archives from back then if the archives of that era still exist. Many of the mappers from those days probably have stories they will never forget about loosing their greatest creations to those tools. Actually getting a finished map was a crap shoot. Thankfully those days are long gone. 9 Quote Share this post Link to post

MObreck Posted September 8, 2023 Old enough to have played DOOM as a teenager when it was new. On a 486 Compaq with only 4 megs of RAM. Been modding DOOM since late 1994, but I've done far more dehacked/coding work than building maps. 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
