Because they're usually reverse-engineered, hacked and recompiled, for whatever reason, usually using the wrong utilities as well.

That is often the case. Sometimes bad CD-rips, not tracking all the files end up with the program requesting files that were ripped off, that's the most common bug.

But with Duke3D? I mean this game isn't even protected by anything. There's nothing in it to crack.

Heh, Duke3d pretty much gives the impression of humans having nothing but "delicately" dressed chicks on their mind - makes the game seem like a parody of Doom.
I guess a lot of you boys would wish reallife.exe had that many chicks hangin' around ;-)

Duke 3d is great. I have the full version and Duke It Out in DC. I love that game because:

1. The editor is easy to use and very versitile
2. Dukematch is my favorite form of deathmatch, next to Quake 2
3. The levels are great (excpet maybe the 2nd episode)

I remember when I had a LAN back in the day, all we'd ever play was Dukematch and Half-Life deathmatch (eew).
