This is what I should have been playing on lol - and regardless of my bad choices I'm still having fun. I went ahead and did 25 this morning and I didn't run out of ammo .... ish lol - check out my final inventory and health at the very end lol I still very much want to finish this so will be back for more :) 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Regardless of this comment being too late, my first playthrough of Going Down was also on HMP, and it being described as fun difficulty sounds spot on. As a plus, you can replay later on UV and with the foreknowledge having taken off the edges that'd be rough on UV, it's fun again :P (Although I have only just begun my UV replay, so I wouldn't know for sure. But I suspect that's going to be the case. It very much applied to Ancient Aliens, and based on handful of maps, also to Sunlust). 2 Quote Share this post Link to post

Maybe you'll have even more fun with the maps on HMP and that's nice not just for you but also for the viewer. Dropping down to a lower difficulty isn't a sign of defeat, it's just a different kind of playing. :) Edited April 22, 2023 by AdNauseam 2 Quote Share this post Link to post
Valboom Posted April 24, 2023 I can confirm, I played Going Down on pistol start HMP and it was really fun (I usually play on UV). 3 Quote Share this post Link to post

Clippy Posted June 18, 2023 Guess what - I finished map 28 and thought - I should probably finish them all right I gotta tell ya I cant express how much I love this set! The hype is real and I'm so glad I finally experienced it 28: Has to be the craziest map in the set but thankfully no ammo issues here - just rip and tear in another beautiful arena -- loved how it looked at the end - this feels like its ramping up to be the finale 29: This felt like a finale - so satisfying to blow up the building I got tortured in for all this time - and that boss was unexpected - nice use of the ruins for cover and stuff - reat 30: this really blew my mind - with no spoilers I thought I pulled another tetanus - I thought I was playing a regular old thank you map. It was cool to be back home and see the building and construction etc. But as I felt compelled to explore more it actually became a level lol. I was not expecting that at all and was truly not privy to that knowledge so it was executed perfectly. Why are the demons at my home now lol - great stuff This was all fantastic. I'll be airing throughout the day but here is advanced screening 5 Quote Share this post Link to post

DogsRNice Posted June 20, 2023 The fact this thread is still going after all that time shows how good this wad is 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Klear Posted August 2, 2023 (edited) I'm finally giving this a go. I'm not going into this blind, as I've watched Decino's playthrough. Twice even, so I have a good idea of what to expect. I've played the first seven levels on UV previously (yes, I stopped before the spooky one) and it was too much for me, having to force my way through using constant saves, so I'm gonna go with HMP this time. From the first three levels it feels quite similar, except I don't die constantly and I still have some ammo by the time I reach the elevator. Good. I'm playing on QuestZDoom, an excellent VR port for standalone headsets, with Voxel Doom 2 (makes a ton of difference in VR) and alekksandar's VR weapons. The revolver replacing the default pistol made my life much easier in level 1, but other than that the weapons behave as vanilla. Map01-03: The opening maps are a joy to play in VR, especially Evil Admin, as that one offers the most opportunities to lean around corners and shoot through windows. Shotguning imps and zombies never gets old. Crawl Space look awesome. It does feel somewhat more spacious than it does in flatscreen, but the little windows into the proper rooms never looked better. Using fists is rather awkward in VR, but the chainsaw rocks, so that's a plus too. I did manage to get myself killed here, mostly because I was just enjoying myself too much and forgot to keep an eye on my health. So far the wad plays really well in VR. We'll see how things change when I reach the more slaughtery maps later on, hopefully all the voxels won't melt my headset. Spoiler Edited August 2, 2023 by Klear 1 Quote Share this post Link to post
Klear Posted August 6, 2023 Map04-07: More levels very well suited for VR, though the difficulty starts to creep up a bit. This also concludes the part of the wad I previously played on UV, so I'll be going into the rest of it very slightly more blind, though not really. I went the other way in Blood and Rockets this time, which means I didn't have the rocket launcher for when the legion of imps shows up, but it's ok. I know there are more such legions coming. Time Warp might be my favourite among these early maps, with focus on shotgun in the first part and rocket mayhem in the second. I ate a revenant rocket due to getting stuck on geometry - moving using an analog stick still doesn't feel quite natural to me and bumping into stuff while dodging is as issue while playing in VR, but on the other hand I made full use of my extra degrees of freedom. Painframe is funny. Imagine entering a computer and shooting demons there. Not in our reality but in a sort of virtual one. What will people think of next? I knew exactly what to expect in Bad Reception, yet the avalanche of Hell Knights still caught me off-guard. Already?! Definitely glad I went with HMP. I pushed through on UV, but it was pain. As an aside, the voxel eyes that fall out of dead mancubi look hilarious. Right. The Scary One is next, but after surviving Mass Propulsion in Solar Stuggle I should be fine.
