kmxexii Posted December 27, 2013 Suicide zombie is a good pick imo I like the rocket troopers and tech troopers lifted from Obituary... More the tech troopers than the self-immolating rocket dudes. Tech troopers move faster than the other zombies plus the partial invisibility thing, and they don't fire fast enough to be as immediately dangerous as chaingunners. Rocket troopers are just great fun, I loved seeing them cook themselves or others with misfires. Another favorite, though I'm not sure it got translated - the Polydrones from STRAIN. Slow, durable flying hitscanners that create flaming obstacles on their death. It would be a nice treat if their carcasses also damaged other monsters so that you could kite enemies through them. The dopplegangers also had a semi-unique attack pattern (fireball then charge). 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Pirx Posted December 28, 2013 afrit, mostly, for some reasons: it's tougher than a baron of hell and has more dangerous attacks (i assume it's the version that shoots mancubus flames and revenant missiles). barons in open spaces are bothersome because they can't hit a halfway nimble player but eat a lot of ammo. i often punch them for this reason. i would have liked the original baron to throw bigger, explosive fireballs, unlike his lower form, the knight. when i played doom for the first time, i assumed the baron projectiles and the bfg ball had something in common, because they're both green ;) ok, it's an edit of the id baron, but it fits doom's sprites perfectly. i don't like monsters that stand out because of their colors, animations or style. this breaks immersion for me. the afrit isn't an obvious baron recolor, it looks like it has always inhabited the later hellish maps. it also belongs there because of the difficulty curve. it floats, so it can follow the player in places unaccessible to the pedestrian monsters. for lower tier monsters i'd go with the rocket launcher zombies (dangerous, but great fun seeing them blow themselves up) and the blood demon / blood fiend (i guess that's the one that spits blood and leaps at the player, makes a monster more threatening whose main attack means getting in the way). but if i'm allowed to pick just one, i take the afrit. would have given me a "holy shit" moment if it was in doom 2 from the beginning. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Yeah, they're great fun until you get blasted by one of their rockets unknowingly. We'll see if you find them fun, then. :p Pirx said:(i assume it's the version that shoots mancubus flames and revenant missiles) You encounter this one in Scythe 2, I believe. Never liked it, personally. It felt overpowered and did a good job at spamming projectiles (at least that's how I remember it). The one on Realm has a completely different behavior, for the record. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

Yeah, I've had my fair share of zombie rockets, and loved it all. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Olroda Posted December 28, 2013 The former scientist(s) would be a great addition to DooM, but since this is DooM II, I'm not sure. The previously mentioned rocket zombie is definitely one option, but I've never cared for his face. Is it supposed to be a flesh-less skull, or what? The chainsaw zombie is another option, but his sprites look a bit messy, so, no. Barring these two, I'd say the Lord of Heresy. As with the Afrit, the sprites fit right in, and I wouldn't mind a few (few as in boss / miniboss monster) encounters with these horrors over the course of the game. [What DooM II really needs is some sort of former human (civilian) with unique, non-soldier sprites. Close combat only, either bare-fisted or with a bat or something equally simple. After all, there would be plenty of these around when Hell meets Earth.] 0 Quote Share this post Link to post

The one on Realm has a completely different behavior, for the record. i downloaded the afrit from realm and tried it. seems more faithful to the line of original id monsters: stronger than a baron, but not a walking/flying battleship. strafing is sufficient. interesting secondary attack however, that setting the ground on fire. might trap players on low health. i'd say this version is preferable for wads with a classic feel and the scythe2 version for slaughterish maps or as a miniboss. i tried some more monsters, and what i definitely don't like are those who feel very different from the originals, mostly because they attack all the time like in fast mode (while doom2 monsters walk, attack, walk and so on), or they have simply too many or overly spammy attacks. doom2 monsters are more straightforward. even the archvile has a single attack. the baby caco is simply cute, however. almost makes one feel bvad for killing him ;) 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
Ed Posted December 28, 2013 Chainsaw zombie seems like it would be the most logical fit and would add to the horror element of the game quite a bit in some of those darkened hallways. 0 Quote Share this post Link to post
