Oh my icon of sin

Looks nice. Nice is an appropriate word in my opinion. For the "right done" IOS I'd expect less generic-hellish detailing and more of awe-inspiring unexpected patterns of his looks, making obvious that he's THE badass half-cybernetic Supreme Ruler of Hell. But in any way, a low bow to the author of this IOS, because it well stays loyal to its model (in a principle) and to Doom3-like hellish aesthetics, which is surely cool.

While it's certainly cool looking, a video I saw of it on youtube mostly involved standing at a safe distance and firing the BFG til it died. Was not really a hectic gameplay experience like the original MAP30 was.

It looks really boring. Gotta agree with scifista here. It's just a small extremely generic room with a rather small-looking horse/goat/whatever skull on a wall. The original IOS might've just been a wall himself, but at least the location was a great combination of surreal and epic (mainly because of it's size...). Neither is present here.

While the hands coming through the holes in the wall are a nice touch; making it look like the icon is in the stocks/ a pillory, I too think it looks pretty dull. I think the bottom line is that a big static goat skull stuck in a wall is actually a pretty dull boss. Doesn't matter how pretty you make it, it just doesn't work for me as anything much more than a cheap boss that was a function of a limited engine as much as anything.

The Icon would have to be at least as big as it was in Doom II, here he looks like wall decoration that happened to get pissed off enough to try and kill you. Maybe if he was actually able to use those arms, to start with, he'd be a bit more interesting. Trying to smash you and all. Having him change the arena while you're fighting could help, though I'm not sure. I suppose there's just not much you can do to a stationary target like that.
I always found the Icon to be an annoying boss anyways, what with the monsters' projectiles smacking you off the platform and the auto-aim not working the way you want it to. Half the time I couldn't even get on the thing.

An IoS scene I'd like to see is having not just its head, but the rest of its gigantic body half buried/ half fused into the surrounding area, and you have to battle on top of it while its writhing in agony, yet still trying to kill you as its trapped in its prison.

I really don't understand how some people think the original IOS is all skeletal, there's clearly flesh all over it which is even more obvious by the stretched out skin around the opening to the exposed brain.

Even discounting the fact that the IoS is just a wall, the whole concept is kind of goofy and nonsensical. This giant powerful demon is chained up within hell, encased in piping and things, with his brain exposed because... it helps him think? The other demons don't like him? He was naughty and mama demon put him in timeout? I don't know.

Are you serious op? That doesn't look demonic or satanic at all, it's just a low polygon skull. The real ios has good texturing, a nice evil smile, and just screams baphomet.

Tbh it wasn't that bad. It was definitely different, its possible to imagine the ultimate boss as something stationary. But yeah id could have done better. And for that matter adding some more bosses but thats another topic.

Well the idea of a large stationary monster isn't bad in itself, but they really didn't sell it with the IoS. id has never been too good at boss fights though. I've said this before: I don't know whether to be disappointed or thankful that Quake had 3 episodes without end bosses.

Because spawning monsters inside his own head was giving him headaches?

Actually that doesn't sound too far-fetched to me...

I totally agree, I thought the original ios was weird, but awesome and challenging. It doesnt have to make sense, it's a big hellish demon wall in a game where the marine can outrun Sonic, in that sense it's no more weird than the rest of the game. Though I wasn't quite as impressed with it as the spider mastermind, I'll admit.

I was way more impressed with this ios Zdoom map - (I would normally paste the link here but iPads are retarded. It's called "real icon of sin", very easy to find on YouTube)

Why do people think anything with a goat head is Baphomet? It's a completely different entity and it's not even designed the same way.

It's the same thing with Christians and Satanists with their misconception of Baphomet being related to Satan which also spread throughout popular culture, Baphomet is a pagan deity which symbolizes balance and it's not supposed to be demonic.

They did a brilliant job of the final boss in Quake. I mean, wandering up a path, realising that the spiky ball thing passing through the giant, stationary, non-dangerous anemone for no obvious reason was a teleport destination and then jumping in to the teleport for a one hit kill was a legendarily great way to finish the game. Seriously, it make the IoS feel like the most epic boss battle ever. :/

Because kids want to feel cool by claiming that they killed Satan in a 20-year old videogame

or at least that's how I've been seeing it as of lately in Doom

Reminds me of that time I accidentally Google image searched "DOOM 2 Icon of Sin" without having turned safe search on.

Big mistake.
