Sunlust [on /idgames]

Played up to MAP17 or MAP18 (including the secret levels) before it got too slaughtery for my patience levels. Warped to the other levels at least so I could see some of the architecture and hopefully some of the non-slaughter gameplay.

Still, this is totally Cacoward material despite a good chunk of it not being to my tastes.

Reading the review I feel like I'm missing on some private joke. Why is NORTH always fully uppercased whenever that word appears?

it is more of a reference but one that has no relation to doom, at least not as it relates to id software. i imagine that the cross-section of people who will recognize it is pretty small but it is not a secret I wish to divulge. I hope it isn't too distracting

Map04's track doesn't seem to have fared very well... was there a polyphony limit imposed somewhere?

Apart from just listening for notes missing I don't really know how to verify that.

Outside of the original Doom soundtracks it seems like the 'ol SC-55 is more a different take than a definitive one. I think it's been more hit than miss though.

Wikipedia says the SC-55 mkII has a limit of 28 voices - sounds like you could be hitting that limit. If you felt ambitious you could try breaking up the midi into two or more parts and recording them from the SC-55 separately, then mixing them together.

Yeah giving it another good listen and comparing to a soft synth I hear what you guys are talking about pretty clearly now.

sounds like the some of the tracks are delayed out of sync by a little bit, most noticeable around 0:40 when the flutes are clearly lagging the beat.

overall, cool sounding tracks though! gives me another reason to cruise through some of these maps I haven't touched in awhile now :)

Channel count seems better but I think the sync between tracks is off. A typical thing to do is to have an extra track with just a beep or something at the start of the file before the music starts, that gets included in both mixes, so you have a sound you can line up. Sorry I didn't give this kind of hint before, oops...

If you still have the recordings of each half before mixing, I can sync them up if you want to upload them.

This was pretty tough to do, the first track has almost no instruments with any sharp attacks, but enough to make them really sound bad stand out when they're not synced. There are some unusual rhythms in there, and some of the drums are slightly off-time on purpose to get a more layered sound. I'm still not 100% confident in my mix but I think it's quite close at least.

Audacity is probably fine to do this kind of thing, but I've never liked it so I can't really tell you how to use it properly. In my case I used a program a little bit like Ableton Live to play both tracks so I could adjust the timing on the fly, and also played the channel-limit mix at the same time to compare against.

If you have to do this thing again, even if you don't want to add a cue marker sound, being smart about which tracks to separate into the first/second mixes would make it much easier to sync. Here, if the drums and guitar were on separate tracks it would be quite easy to sync them up, since they're both very sharp attacks which makes it easy to tell when one isn't in time with the other, and they're also the only two tracks at the start of the song.

Great! It sounds much better now.

Thanks for all the information plums, there's a couple other midis I'll need to do this with as well, those tips will make it much easier. I've updated the music wad.

This mapset is absolutely gorgeous. I'm currently on map 29 and I managed to complete almost every map before that on UV (I couldn't do the strafejump on map 31 and I accidentally overwrote my save of map 24 and didn't have the patience to start over from the beginning), but damn, this map is such a jump in difficulty. I've been stuck in the first room longer than I took on some earlier maps altogether.

I just had a dream last night that I was playing The Womb, and succeeding, and it was fun and performance was good.

Can confirm compatibility with the source port that my unconscious mind has slowly cobbled together over thousands of hours of doom.

We had come up with the name shortly before first posting this thread (which originally just contained some old screenshots of E1 and a solicitation for playtesters). We were working on E2/E3 at the time, and Danne was in the middle of what would become m18 (Mu Cephei), so we were thinking about spacey sounding words. We eventually picked it (after sending lots of cheesy ideas back and forth), turns out it's also the name of a porn company, I was aware of this slightly earlier than danne was :p

Wow, that's quite the saga, sir. There was a part of me that thought you guys were making a subtle reference to Insane Gazebo (Sunder, Sunlust). Good to know rule 34 is still in effect :P
Regardless, this is months late, but you both are swell guys, and Sunlust is pure brilliance. Pure evil, evil brilliance.

I'm getting a segmentation violation that happens shortly after the menu loads on MBF. I know, I know, it's not really designed for that but your other two boom-compatible wads work fine.
